  • The excitonic insulator (EI), which is one of fundamental insulators, was theoretically proposed in 1967 but its material realization has not been established well. Only a few materials were proposed as EIs but their experimental evidences were indirect such as the renormalization of band dispersions or an anomaly in electrical resistivity. We conducted scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy measurements and found out that $Ta_2$ $NiSe_5$, which was the most recently proposed as an EI, had a metal-insulator phase transition with the energy gap of 700 meV at 78 K. Moreover, the spatially delocalized excitonic energy level was observed within the energy gap, which could be the direct evidence of the EI ground state. Our theoretical model calculation with the order parameter of 150 meV reproduces the spectral function and the excitonic energy gap very well. In addition, experimental data shows that the band character is inverted at the valence and conduction band edges by the exciton formation, indicating that the mechanism of exciton condensation is similar to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) mechanism of cooper pairs in superconductors.

  • Phase diagrams of electron- and hole-doped $Sr_2VO_3FeAs$ are investigated using Co and Mn substitution at Fe site. Metallic nature survives only for Co (electron) doping, not for Mn (hole) doping. The conductivity of $Sr_2VO_3(Fe,M)As$ (M=Mn,Co) is sensitive to the structural modification of FeAs microstructure rather than carrier doping. This finding implies that the FeAs layer plays a dominant role on the charge conduction, thus the $SrVO_3$ layers should be considered as an insulating block. Also, we found that the superconductivity is rapidly suppressed by both dopants. This result is different from the conventional behavior that superconductivity is induced by doping in the most of Fe pnictides. Our finding strongly supports the uniqueness of $Sr_2VO_3FeAs$ among the Fe pnictide superconductors.

  • Ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) technology has been successfully applied to high-temperature superconductor coated conductors (CC) as textured substrates. Since the coated conductors were proposed as a potential framework for utilizing the superior transport characteristics of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ and related cuprate oxides, several methods including rolling-assisted bi-axial textured substrates (RABiTS) and inclined substrate deposition (ISD), as well as IBAD, have been attempted. As of 2016, most companies that are trying to commercialize CC adapt IBAD technology except for American Superconductors who use RABiTS predominantly. For the materials in the IBAD process, initial efforts to use yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) or related fluorites in Fujikura in Japan have quickly given way to MgO which technique was developed by Stanford University in the USA. In this review, we present a historical overview of IBAD technology, in particular, for the application of CC. We describe the key scientific understanding of nucleation, the texturing mechanism, and the growth of large bi-axial grains and discuss some potential new IBAD materials and systems for large-scale production.

  • For the application of superconductor technology, we need critical properties of superconductors such as a critical current ($I_c$). $I_c$ is varied as processing method by action of flux pinning center. Our research activities are reported on the establishment of standard measurement method for critical current in coated conductor. And then, we researched pre-studies for standardization of critical current evaluation method using IEC/TC 90 standard.

  • We evaluated the effect of processing variables on microstructural evolution interface irregularity between Ag sheath and superconductor core and resultant critical current density(J$_{c}$) of (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$(2223) superconductor tape. The value of J$_{c}$ was significantly influenced by the interface irregularity, degree of texturing and relative 2223 content. The interface became more irregular(sausage effect), while the degree of texturing gradually improved as the dimension of tape decreased during forming process. As the dimension of wire/tape were changed from diameter of 3.25 mm to thickness of 0.20 mm, J$_{c}$ value was observed to be increased by 10 times. In addition, optimum sintering temperature for improved J$_{c}$ was observed to be 835$^{\circ}C$ in a ambient atmosphere probably due to combined effect of both improved texturing and high 2223 content. Microstructural investigation showed the degree of texturing was degraded by the existence of both second phases and interface irregularity. It was observed that larger grain size and better texturing was developed near relatively flat interface compared to those inside superconducting core.ting core.

  • $Bi_{1.84}Pb_{0.34}Sr_{1.91}Ca_{2.03}Cu_{3.06}O_{10+\delta}$ high $T_{c}$ superconductors containing Ag as an additive were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. The superconducting properties, such as the structural characteristics, the critical temperatures, the grain size and the image of mapping on the surface were investigated. Samples with Ag and Au of 50 wt% each were sintered at various temperature(820~$850^{\circ}C$). The structural characteristics, the microstructure of surface and the critical temperature with respect to the each samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM, EDS and four-prove methode respectively. The critical temperature showed the result which the Ag additive samples are higher than Au additive samples. The microstructure of the surface showed the tendency which the Ag additive samples become more minuteness than Au additive samples.

  • The effect of substitution of Gd ions for Ca ions in the B $i_{1.84}$P $b_{0.34}$S $r_{1.91}$(C $a_{1-x}$ G $d_{x}$)$_{2.03}$ C $u_{3.06}$ $O_{ 10+{\delta}}$/ (x=0.0~0.06) was investigated by measuring x-ray diffraction patterns, lattice constants, do resistivity and Hall effect. We found the solubility limit of Gd in the 110 K phase to be x < 0.015. Within the solubility limit, the c-axis seemed to decrease with increasing x. In the region of the 110 K single phase, the critical temperature $T_{c}$ gradually decreased with an increasing the Gd concentration x, corresponding to a small change of the carrier concentration.

  • Partial discharge measurements in cryogenic dielectric materials of HTS transformer are very important because partial discharge was regarded as primary source for ageing and breakdown of cryogenic materials. But, partial discharge measurement techniques and its effects in low temperature high voltage environments were not suggested and there exist only a few reports on this research fields. Therefore, in order to implement reliable HTS transformers, partial discharge diagnosis techniques for cryogenic materials of HTS transformers were investigated using partial discharge (PD) pattern analysis methods. In this works, four different types of artificial defects including turn to turn insulation, free moving particle, void and protrusion, have been fabricated since it was commonly regarded that they might cause the sudden service failures of the power apparatus. For this purpose, these defects are installed into the dielectric materials in liquid nitrogen and experimental investigations have been carried out for the diagnosis of HTS transformer. And various PD patterns caused by the amount of quench of superconductors were analyzed. Throughout this works, the different PD patterns in cryogenic dielectric materials in liquid nitrogen, and PD measuring technique could be the fundamental steps to establish diagnosis technologies of HTS transformer for power applications.

  • If we rely only on the conventional technology, It may be difficult to meet the recent requirments to electric power system such as further improvement of the quality of electric power supply, technology problems environmental compatibility and so on. Nowadays, power engineers much interest in applying new technology to power system industry. It is confirmed the technology of superconductivity applied components plays an important role in solving the problems of power system, because superconductors, used in suitable applications, can make electric power equipment smaller, lighter, more efficient and perhaps with better dynamic response. Two specific applications are considered here : electric machinery (Generators, Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage, Transformer, Current limitter) and transmission line. The paper addresses the limitation of conventional technology, the technology impact & problems of superconductivity applied components to future power system from qualitative and some quantitative viewponts. The paper close with questions posed to simulate thinking on how superonductivity might be applied to power systems on a holistic basis.

  • Various different types of joining between High Tc superconducting(HTS) tapes were prepared and current-voltage(I-V) characteristic curves were investigated at 77 K, liquid nitrogen temperature. Two typos of HTS tapes wore used, one is no laminated tape(Sumitomo high strength type tape) and the other stainless steel laminated tape(AMSC(American Superconductors Inc.) 3ply tapes) Sample joints were lap-jointed with indium or solder. Joint resistances between Sumitomo tapes with 4-10 mm in length were estimated from I-V curves and in the range of $4-8n{\Omega}$ at 77 K. Joint resistances of AMSC tapes were in the range of $140-170n{\Omega}$, much higher than them of Sumitomo samples. The n-values of jointed HTS tapes were 50% of them with no joint. In AMSC tapes, indium is better than solder as the jointing material.
