  • The properties of Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Super-conductors prepared by solidstate reaction have been studied. Zero resistance was attained at l03K for the sample sintered 845[$^{\circ}C$]for 264hours and it was depended upon sintering conditions. From XRD data low Tc phase and high Tc phase were observed and the volume fraction of high Tc phase increased with increase in sintering period. The grain size increased with increase in sintering temperature and time.

  • Since the discovery of the high temperature superconductors many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means In limit fault current in power systems. HTS resistive type SFCL is based on the ultra fast transition from the superconducting (non resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density, In this study, the simulation method of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter using EMTDC is proposed and the developed EMTDC model of SFCL is applied to the modeled power network using the Parameters of real system.

  • The unique features of HTS offer opportunities and challenges to a number of applications. In this paper we focus on NMR and MRI magnets, illustrating them with the NMR/MRI magnets that we are currently and will shortly be engaged: a 1.3 GHz NMR magnet, an "annulus" magnet, and an $MgB_2$whole-body MRI magnet. The opportunities with HTS include: 1) high fields (e.g., 1.3 GHz magnet); 2) compactness (annulus magnet); and 3) enhanced stability despite liquid-helium-free operation ($MgB_2$whole-body MRI magnet). The challenges include: 1) a large screening current field detrimental to spatial field homogeneity (e.g., 1.3 GHz magnet); 2) uniformity of critical current density (annulus magnet); and 3) superconducting joints ($MgB_2$magnet).

  • Residual resistance ratio ( RRR ) of Cu/Nb-Ti Superconductor wire was evaluated by fixed point method. Our measured value of RRR showed good consistency with the average value obtained from round robin test conducted by IEC/TC 90. Our test results showed that the coefficient of variation ( COV ) was kept within 2 %

  • Squeeze film dampers(SFDs) are designed and analyzed for radial superconducting bearings. The designed SFDs are mounted on the superconductors submerged in liquid nitrogen such that the dampers should supply additional damping to the relatively underdamped superconducting bearing support. Basic theory of SFD with superconducting bearing are introduced. Rotordynamic simulations are provided to support the feasibility of the superconducting magnetic bearings mounted on SFDs for a horizontal flywheel energy storage system.

  • The traditional BCS superconductors $AOs_2O_6$ (A=K, Rb, and Cs) were investigated to find the relationship between their structures and superconducting transition temperatures. The $T_c$ decreases with increasing the unit cell parameter of $AOs_2O_6$. This is in contrast to the case of conventional BCS superconductivity in a single bond model, where $T_c$ may increase with increasing the the unit cell parameter since the DOS at Fermi level increases as the unit cell parameter increases. Instead, the $T_c$ of a $\beta$-pyrochlore oxide is proportional to the lattice softness of the compound.

  • We have studied the standardization of critical temperature measurements by using an ac susceptometer. Wire forms of NbTi, $Nb_{3}Sn$, and Bi-2223 superconductors were prepared to measure the temperature dependences of the magnetization. In order to study the optimum ac magnetic field and frequency, various amplitudes from 2 Oe to 10 Oe with frequencies from 11.3 Hz to 1033 Hz were applied to three specimens. Analytical comparison of the magnetic curves with the resistive curves was accomplished to investigate validity of using the new method.

  • The discoveries of high temperature superconductors received great attention due to their high critical temperatures. These materials also exhibit extremely high critical magnetic fields and high critical current density at low temperature, high magnetic field. Thus, they are the most promising materials for superconducting magnets above 20 T. In this talk, progress in the development of HTS materials and insert coils at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will be reviewed. In 1999, a Bi-2212 stack of double pancakes generated 3 T in a 19 T background field. These results will be reviewed in terms of implications for future systems. Individual double pancakes of Bi-2223 have also been tested and their performance will also be discused. The present goal of a 57 system will be presented and the key technical requirements for larger, higher field systems will be addressed. It will be shown that in addition to increased critical current density, improved mechanical performance (stain resistanced) is necessary for high field systems. Furthemore, improvements in the conductor n-value will improve prospects for operational systems.

  • The time dependence of irreversible magnetization of grain aligned infinite layer superconductor Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ was measured in temperature range of 2 K < T < 30 K for H= 0.5 T, 1.0 T and 1.5 T parallel to c-axis. From this, we calculated normalized flux creep rate S(T) ${\equiv}$ dlnM/dlnt and found that the temperature independent region in S(T) is significantly wide in comparision with other cuprate superconductors. Using the method of Maley et al., we also deduce the current density dependence of pinning potential and glassy exponent ${\mu}$.

  • The mixed-state Hall angle has been measured in Hg-based superconducting thin films as functions of magnetic fields (H) up to 18 T. The temperature dependence of the Hall angle shows a peak (T$^{\ast}$) at low temperature, which is consistent with a crossover point from the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) to a critical region (CR). At low fields below 10 T, T$^{\ast}$ shifts to low temperature with increasing fields. Interestingly, however, we found that T$^{\ast}$ is independent of fields above 10 T, suggesting unusual vortex state. A physical implication of H - T$^{\ast}$ line will be discussed.
