  • (Sm/Y)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were directionally grown by zone-melting process, haying large temperature gradient, In air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $({Sm/y})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] composite oxides by cold isostatic pressing(CIP) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $({Sm/y})_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 sample with CeO$_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (Sm/Y)1.8 matrix. Both samples, with/without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset Tc $\geq$ 90 K and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density Jc value of the $CeO_2$ addictive were $1{\times}10^5A/\textrm{cm}^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla.

  • Magnetic $T_{c}$ of composite superconductors has been studied for providing a standard method. Various magnetization-temperature curves of NbTi, $Nb_3$Sn and Bi-2223 wires were measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Magnetization-temperature curve of zero-field-cooled procedure showed larger values than fie Id-cooled procedure. To obtain higher resolution near the onset temperature, we employed a two-field-direction method which measures a magnetization-temperature curve of a specimen first in positive and then negative fields. Analytical comparison of the magnetic $T_{c}$, with the resistive T$_{c}$ was accomplished for three specimens. The magnetic $T_{c}$/ mettled showed more detailed information on superconducting state of a specimen than the resistive$T_{c}$/ method. We have also studied the field dependence of the magnetic $T_{c}$ from 5 Oe to 120 Oe, however, no significant difference on field strength was found in our three specimensns

  • Magnetic levitation forces and trapped magnetic fields of top-seeded melt growth-processed YBCO superconductors with multiseeding were studied. The number of seeds was varied from one to six. The surface magnetic field of the prepared YBCO samples was dependent on the number of the seeds. The trapped magnetic field of the top surface decreased with increasing the number of the seed. Particularly, it drastically decreased at the YBCO grain boundary, probably due to the weak rink nature of the boundary. The magnetic levitation force also decreased with increasing the number of the seeds, similar to the variation of the surface magnetic field.

  • For extraction of the self-energy from the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) experiments for the cuprate superconductors, the momentum distribution curve(MDC) analysis is commonly used. There are two requirements for this method to work: the self-energy is momentum independent and the bare electron dispersion is known. Assuming that the first condition is satisfied in the cuprates, we checked the effects of the bare dispersion on the extracted self-energy. For this, we first generated the ARPES intensity using the tight-binding band of the B2212 by solving the Eliashberg equation. We then extracted the self-energy from the theoretically generated ARPES intensity using the linear and quadratic dispersions. By choosing the bare dispersion such that the Kramer-Kronig relation is best satisfied between the real and imaginary parts of the extracted self-energy, we confirmed that the quadratic dispersion is better for the bare electron band for Bi2212. The self-energy can be reasonably extracted from the ARPES experiments using the MDC analysis.

  • The force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K is measured and analyzed numerically. Both values are compared, and the difference between them is discussed. The forces, acting on a superconducting disk (thickness:1[mm], diameter:12[mm]) in an axially-symmetric magnetic field produced by a solenoid or a permanent magnet ring, are measured at 77K. The disk is an YBCO high Tc superconductor. The discrete surface current method(DSCM) is formalized for an axially-symmetric magnetic field. The forces of the superconducting disk in the magnetic field are analyzed using the DSCM, assuming that the disk is a perfect diamagnetic body. When the bottom side of the disk is separated 8[mm] from the top side of the solenoid, and the magnetic field applied on the center of the bottom side of the disk is 96[G], the measured value and the calculated value of the force are 96 and 496[mgf], respectively. The difference between them is caused by a non-perfect diamagnetism of the high Tc superconductor at 77K. It is proposed that a real force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K can be estimated on the basis of a measured magnetic susceptibility of the high Tc superconductor at 77K and a calculated force of a perfect diamagnetic body.

  • In this research, the development of fabrication technique of bulk YBaCuO superconductors for application was studied. In fluence of $BaZrO_3$ addition on magnetization characteristics of thermal pyrolysis textured YBaCuO superconductor was investigated. Fine $BaZrO_3$ particle were dispersed within the textured YBaCuO matrix by means of the thermal pyrolysis processing. Magnetic levitation force for YBaCuO superconductors were obtained using Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet, at 77 K and at the magnetic field from 0 to 5.3 K gauss. In the unadded superconductor and 5 wt% $BaZrO_3$ addition, anomalous magnetization behavior, which is characterized by the intermediate magnetic field, was observed at 77 K. Critical current density was about few hundreds $A/cm^2$ and the magnetic characteristics increased slightly by addition of $BaZrO_3$ powder. Maximum magnetic force was obtained in the YBaCuO superconducting bulk with 3 wt.% $BaZrO_3$ addition.

  • We fabricated large single grain YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$ (Y-123) superconductors. The single grain Y-123 was grown by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) method. In a conventional box furnace with uniform temperature distribution, it was very difficult to grow large single grain Y-123 superconductors due to the size limitation in growth. To overcome the size limitation, we applied a radial thermal gradient (lower temperature at sample center and higher temperature on the sample edge) to the TSMG process. In this case, large single grain Y-123 could be easily grown. This is attributed that the liquid of the sample edge was maintained at the high temperature compared to the growth front. Using this method, we successfully fabricated a large single grain Y-123 of 6.4 cm X6.4 cm

  • The infinite layer compound $ACuO_2$, (A-Alkaline earth) consists of infinite stacking of $CuO_2$ planes separated only by alkaline earth ions. This compound attracted much attention because it contains only key ingredient of all cuprate high temperature superconductor; $CuO_2$ plane with controllable carrier concentration without charge reservoir block. High pressure synthesis method has been found to be preferable for this system due to its ability of doping various lanthanide ion into A site with larger superconducting volume fraction. But rigorous study on this rudimentary compound has been hindered by insufficient quality of sample. Especially superconductlng volume fraction was often too small to identify its origin. In this presentation, we report high pressure synthesis of $Sr_{0.9}Ln_{0.1}CuO_2$ (Ln=La, Sm). By controlling the heating temperature precisely during high pressure synthesis we could have superconductors with quite high superconducting volume fraction for this compound. The magnetic properties of the graln aligned samples show very different behavior compared to the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Details will be discussed.

  • This is a parameter study for the direct fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductors using Y2O3, BaCO3 and CuO powders without any grinding step. The cracks, which have been formed due to volume contraction during calcination step, have been prevented by controlling the heating rate at 930~950 ℃. It has been observed that multi-grain growth has occurred due to the dissolution of Sm123 seed due to the retention of carbon in Ba-Cu-O melt. In order to accelerate the carbon release in prior calcination heat treatment, the reduction of pellet thickness and the drilling of artificial holes have been applied. Single-grain YBCO bulk superconductor has been successfully fabricated by stacking multiple thin slab. However, the crack formation has been rather prominent for the compact with artificial holes. The use of buffer pellet, which is supposed to act as diffusion barrier, has prevented the dissolution of Sm123 seed crystal and has led to the growth of single grain of high content of carbon containing specimen.

  • Superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors irradiated with 45 MeV ${\alpha}$-particle beam were studied. After the irradiation, enhancement of the critical current density and pinning force was observed, scaling close to strong pinning formula. Double logarithmic plots of the maximum pinning force density with irreversible magnetic field show a power law behavior close to carbon-doped MgB2 film or polycrystals. Variation of normalized pinning force density in the reduced magnetic field suggests scaling formulas for strong pinning mechanism like planar defects. We also observed a rapid decay of critical current density as the vortex lattice constant decreases, due to the strong interaction between vortices and increasing magnetic field.
