Among the high distribution voltage consumers, high-capacity consumers are often applying the grounding resistance method in order to overcome demerits such as erroneous operation of the ground reply or potential increase in the battery at the accident of the isolated neutral system. In this paper, to prevent damage to CLR and GPT in the delay to block the breakdown in the resistance grounded neutral system, this study aims to provide a proper suggestion for continuous rating capacity of GPT to check the appropriateness of CLR size and reduce GPT burden. Thereupon, this study comparatively analyzes CLR current applied in general GPT and the current gained when CLR demanded in the system is used and analyzes the simulated system through simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC in order to suggest GPT's proper continuous rating capacity.
This paper analyzes the improvement of the power quality by the reduction of the inrush current. We analyze the existing methods and simulate the segragated point-on-wave closing method selected as the proper method. And we attempts to use the resistive type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) to reduce the transformer inrush current. We simulate the various insertion resistances and analyze the voltage drop. All simulation are performed by EMTP. The simulation results show the validity and effectiveness of a SFCL application and the segragated point-on-wave closing method to reduce the inrush current and improve the power quality.

This paper proposes a coordinative protection study results of 22.9kV HTS(High-Temperature Superconducting) cable implemented distribution system. HTS cable can provide about 5 times larger transfer capacability compare to conventional XLPE cable, however, it has different heat characteristic so called quench. This paper presents the simulation results on Ichun substation HTS cable which connects main transformer and 22.9kV bus. Various expected fault cases are considered and discussed to examine whether conventional protection scheme is effective to protect both of existing facilities and HTS cable. With the results of simulation, conventional protection scheme can be used if instantaneous element and time inverse elements could be adjusted with proper time coordination. Internal temperatures of HTS cable conductor in safe region with proper protection without quench. This results are to be demonstrated by the field test and will be implemented in Ichon substation HTS cable protection and control system.
We present domestic efforts for superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) application in the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) grid and pending points at issue. KEPCO's decision to upgrade the 154 kV/22.9 kV main transformer from 60 MVA to 100 MVA cast a problem of high fault current in the 22.9 kV distribution lines. The grid planners supported adopting an SFCL to control the fault current. This environment friendly to SFCL application must be highly dependent upon the successful development of SFCL having specifications that domestic utility required. The required conditions are (1) small size of not greater than twice of 22.9 kV gas insulated switch-gear (GIS), (2) sustainability of current limitation without the line breaking by circuit breakers (CB) for maximum 1.5 seconds. Also, optionally, recommended is (3) the reclosing capability. Conventional resistive SFCLs do not meet (1) $\sim$ (3) all together. A hybrid SFCL is an excellent solution to meet the conditions. The hybrid SFCL consists of HTS SFCL components for fault detection and line commutation, a fast switch (FS) to break the primary path, and a limiter. This characteristic structure not only enables excellent current limiting performances and the reclosing capability, but also allows drastic reduction of HTS volume and small size of the cryostat, resulting in economic feasibility and compactness of the equipment. External current limiter also enables long term limitation since it is far less sensitive to heat generation than HTS. Semi-active operation is another advantage of the hybrid structure. We will discuss more pending points at issues such as maintenance-free long term operation, small size to accommodate the in-house substation, passive and active control, back-up plans, diagnosis, and so on.

As electric power demand of customers is constantly increasing, more bulk power systems are needed to install in a network. By development of renewable energies and high-efficient facilities and deregulated electricity market, moreover, the amount of distributed resource is considerably increasing in distribution network consequently. Also, distribution network has become more and more complex as mesh network to improve the distribution system reliability and increase the flexibility and agility of network operation. These changes make fault current increase. Therefore, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker capacity. In order to solve this problem, replacing breaker, changing operation mode of system and rectifying transformer parameters can be taken into account. The SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) is one of the most promising power apparatus. This paper proposes a methodology for on optimal location of SFCL. This place is defined as considering the decrement of fault current by component type and the increment of reliability by customer type according to an location of SFCL in a distribution network connected with DG(Distributed Generation). With case studies on method of determining optimal location for SFCL applied to a radial network and a mesh network respectively, we proved that the proposed method is feasible.
If we rely only on the conventional technology, It may be difficult to meet the recent requirments to electric power system such as further improvement of the quality of electric power supply, technology problems environmental compatibility and so on. Nowadays, power engineers much interest in applying new technology to power system industry. It is confirmed the technology of superconductivity applied components plays an important role in solving the problems of power system, because superconductors, used in suitable applications, can make electric power equipment smaller, lighter, more efficient and perhaps with better dynamic response. Two specific applications are considered here : electric machinery (Generators, Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage, Transformer, Current limitter) and transmission line. The paper addresses the limitation of conventional technology, the technology impact & problems of superconductivity applied components to future power system from qualitative and some quantitative viewponts. The paper close with questions posed to simulate thinking on how superonductivity might be applied to power systems on a holistic basis.

We investigated the characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) by the number of secondary windings. The SFCL consists of a transformer, which has a primary winding and several secondary windings with serially connected $YB_{a2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ films. In order to increase the capacity. of the SFCL, the serial connection between each current limiting unit is necessary. Resistive-type SFCL has a difficulty in quenching simultaneously between the units due to slight differences of their critical current densities. The hybrid-type SFCL could achieve the simultaneous quenching through the electrical isolation and the mutual flux linkage among the units. We confirmed that the capacity of the SFCL could be increased effectively through the simultaneous quenching among the units. In addition, the power burden of the system could be reduced by adjusting the number of secondary windings. We will investigate the method to increase the capacity through serial and Parallel connections among current limiting units.
Three-phase inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with DC reactor rated on 6.6 $KV_{rms}/200 A_{rms}$ has been developed in Korea. This system consists of one DC reactor, AC/DC power converter, and a three-phase transformer, which is called magnetic core reactor (MCR). This paper deals with the short-circuit analysis of the SFCL. The DC reactor was the HTS solenoid coil whose inductance was 84mH. The power converter was performed as the dual-mode operation for dividing voltage between the rectifying devices. The short-term normal operation (1 see) and short-circuit tests (2∼3 cycles) of this SFCL were performed successfully. In regular short-circuit test, the fault current was limited as 30% of rated short-circuit current at 2 cycles after the fault. The experimental results have a very similar tendency to the simulation results. Using the technique for the fault detection and SCR firing control, the fault current limiting rate of the SFCL was improved. From this research, the parameters for design and manufacture of large-scale SFCL were obtained.

The operational cost for maintaining the superconductivity of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables needs to be reduced for feasible operation. It depends on factors such as AC loss and heat transfer from the outside. Effective operation requires design optimization and suitable operational conditions. Generally, it is known that critical currents increase and AC losses decrease as the operational temperature of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is lowered. However, the cryo-cooler consumes more power to lower the temperature. To determine the effective operational temperature of the HTS cable while considering the critical current and AC loss, critical currents of the HTS cable conductor were measured under various temperature conditions using sub-cooled $LN_2$ by Stirling cryo-cooler. Next, AC losses were measured under the same conditions and their variations were analyzed. We used the results to select suitable operating conditions while considering the cryo-cooler's power consumption. We then recommended the effective operating temperature for the HTS cable system installed in an actual power grid in KEPCO's 154/22.9 kV transformer substation.

This paper analyzed the application of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) on 22.9 [kV] bus tie in a power distribution system. Commonly, the parallel operations of power main transformers offer a lot of merits. However, when a fault occurs in the parallel operation of power main transformer, the fault currents might exceed the interruption capacity of existing protective devices. To resolve this problem, thus, the SFCL has been studied as the fascinating device. In case that, Particularly, the SFCL could be installed to parallel operation of various power main transformers in power distribution system of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) on 22.9 [kV] bus tie, the effect of the resistance of SFCL could reduce the increased fault currents and meet the interruption capacity of existing protective devices by them. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of application and proposed the proper impedance of the R-type SFCL on 22.9 [kV] bus tie in a power distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC.
