  • The yttrium-barium-copper-oxide (YBCO) coated conductor, which supplement the fault of the existing superconducting current-limit materials YBCO thin film, bismuth-strontium-calcium-copper-oxide(BSCCO) wire and bulk, has been improved its mechanical weakness and has high index; hence, after quench YBCO coated conductor could limit the fault current effectively because of fast resistance occurrence speed. Furthermore, it has wide applicable area as an current limit material because it shows different resistance occurrence tendency by the thickness and kind of stabilization material sputtered on the superconducting layer. Therefore, many researchers are carrying out the study of application of YBCO coated conductor to superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for making high quality current limit element, based on resistance type. On the other hand, the study for other type except resistance type has been rarely conducted for the application of YBCO coated conductor to SFCL as an current limit element. Consequently, in this study, YBCO coated conductor with different stabilization layer Cu and Stainless steel, is applied to SFCL using iron core and coil, and examine the many index points as an current limit element, such as current limit characteristic, the tendency of resistance occurrence, response time, the temperature trend for stability.

  • We investigated the operational characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the serial and parallel connections of secondary circuits. The hybrid-type SFCL consists of a transformer, which has a primary winding and several secondary windings with $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ films connected in series and parallel. In order to increase the capacity of the SFCL, the serial connection between each current limiting unit is necessary. The hybrid-type SFCL with the serial connection in secondary circuits could show superior characteristics than those of the parallel connections in the current limiting and quench time. The resistances generated in the superconducting units were also lowered at the parallel connections. We confirmed that the parallel connection reduced the power burden of each superconducting unit under the same conditions because of the simultaneous quenching between superconducting units.

  • This paper analysed a protective equipment in power distribution system linked distribution power system when a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is installed. This paper focused on a recloser, because the recloser is a general protective equipment. When power distribution system linked distribution power system, a fault current is increased by adding fault current of distribution power system. The increased fault current makes many problems. But SFCLs are limiting fault current and help the protective equipment to operate normal process. We analysed the operation of protective equipment in power distribution system linked distribution power system with SFCLs.

  • This study deals with the optimal design of a DC reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL). The condition in which the cost function is minimized under given constraints is one of the things to be first considered in developing SFCLS. This condition is a group of the values corresponding to the variables the cost function depends on. In this paper, the length of tape was taken as a dependent variable, the inductance of DC reactor and the turns ratio of magnetic core reactors as independent variables. For the SFCL available at the level of 6.6kV-200A, we examined 4 cases; at the fault times of 80msec, 50msec, 30msec and 10msec. Since thyristors would be utilized instead of diodes, we chose the result at 10msec as the basic data. Considering safety factor 30%, our optimal design was decided to be the inductance 570mH, the critical current over 620A, the turns ratio 0.89 and the fault time within 20msec.

  • Quench behavior of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) with various pattern shapes was investigated. The pattern shapes employed were meander, bi-spiral, and spital shapes of identical line width, gap and margin. SFCLS were fabricated from YBCO thin films grown on two-inch diameter Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates under the same conditions. The total length of current limiting paths was the shortest at the spital shape due to its larger useless space. Inductance component of SFCLs with the spiral shape was around two times as high as those of other two shapes. This is not desirable since impedance characteristics of existing power systems can be changed. Resistance rise of current limiting elements was low at a spiral shape before the whole quench completion, which may act as a disadvantage for simultaneous quench in serial connection between current limiting elements, but the temperature tended to have similar values at higher voltages. On the other hand, hi-spital shape was severe at insulation level between current limiting lines. When these aspects were considered, we concluded that a meander shape was appropriate to design for a resistive SFCL based on thin films except the concentration of electric field at edge areas of strip lines.

  • In this paper, the method of protective coordination is studied to install Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) to power distribution system. If SFCL is installed, the protective coordination is not operated well because of the decreased fault current. Thus, the resetting method of protective devices is presented to coordinate protection system in power distribution system with resistor-type SFCL. The presented methods are divided into three parts; OCR, OCR-Recloser, OCR-Recloser-Recloser. The presented methods are proved through case studies using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

  • This paper proposed the structure that applied superconductors to the neutral line of a transformer and applied the normal conductors to the third line. The superconductor applied to the neutral line of a transformer limited the peak value of initial fault current, while the normal conductor finally limited the fault current. In order to secure the operating reliability of transformer type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) of previously proposed structure, we analyzed the operating characteristics according to the fault types. We tested a line-to-ground fault and a line-to-line fault. As a result of the experiment, all the faults showed that the superconductor stably limited the peak-value of initial fault current. Also, the normal conductor finally limited the fault current. Based on this research results, We thought that if the structure of inserting superconductor into the neutral line is applied to the real system, it could improve the reliability and stability of the power system.

  • We improved quench properties of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films by their serial and parallel combinations. The SFCL consisted of 6 switching elements fabricated of 4 inch-diameter YBCO thin films. Simple serial connection resulted in imbalanced power dissipation between switching elements even at the quench current difference of 0.6A. On the other hand, $2{\times}2\;and\;3{\times}2$ stack combinations produced simultaneous quenches. The $3{\times}2$ stack combination showed better simultaneous quench behavior than the $2{\times}2$ stacks. This is suggested to be because the currents between switching elements in parallel connection of the $3{\times}2$ stacks were more effectively redistributed than the $2{\times}2$ stacks.

  • When the fault occurs in power system, the fault-current exceeds breaking capacity of the circuit breaker. So, reliablity of the power system is decreased sharply. Superconducting fault-current limiter (SFCL) is operated without impedance in normal state. The fault-current is limited by its impedance during the fault condition. However, the SFCL has several weak points such as huge size, high-price, liquid-nitrogen operation for the real power system. In this paper, We suggested the high-speed interrupter to limit the fault-current in case of the single line-to-ground fault. In addition, we compared the high-speed interrupter with the SFCL to ensure the operation reliability. The proposed interrupter detected the fault-current through the CT, and the power was supplied by operation of the SCR control system. In this experiment, the power of high-speed interrupter was applied after the 4.8[msec] from fault instant. The on-off operation of the interrupter was started after half-cycle from the fault. The fault-current was flowed into the impedance element by the switching operation of the high-speed interrupter. So, the fault current was limited within one cycle, and then it didnt exceed the capacity of a circuit breaker. We confirmed that there was slight difference between the SFCL with high-speed interrupter in terms of limiting-time of the fault-current and switching speed of the SCR. The high-speed interrupter was considered to be more efficient than the SFCL in size, cost or reliability.
