This study was investigated to determine the contamination levels of total aerobic bacteria, coliform group, $E.$$coli$ and food-borne pathogens of side dishes from 2 traditional markets (100 samples) and 2 super markets (100 samples) located on Ulsan. The levels (range) of total aerobic bacteria was 4.75 log CFU/g (1.60~6.92 log CFU/g) in traditional market and 4.62 log CFU/g (2.00~6.46 log CFU/g) in super market, respectively. Coliform was detected in 64 and 66 samples sold at traditional markets and super markets, respectively. $E.$$coli$ was detected in 4 and 6 samples sold at traditional markets and super markets, respectively. The food-borne pathogens, namely $Bacillus$$cereus$ and $Listeria$$monocytogenes$ were detected in 1 sample sold at traditional markets, respectively, and $Bacillus$$cereus$ was detected in 4 samples sold at super markets. However, other pathogens such as $Salmonella$ spp., $Shigella$ spp., $Vibrio$$parahaemolyticus$, $Yersinia$$enterocolitica$, $Clostridium$$perfringens$, $Camphylobacter$$jejuni$ and Pathogenic $E.$$coli$ were not detected. The $Saengchae$ and $Seasoned$$Jeotgal$ were relatively vulnerable compared to the others in the food-borne pathogens.

This study was performed to compare the effect of enrichement of rotifer and Artemia fed marine bacteria (Erythrobacter sp. S$\pi$-1) with those fed the different diets-(Super Selco, $\omega$-yeast and marine Chlorella) on the slime flounder larvae, Microstomus achne. Because the ratio of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to fatty acids in rotifer (dry weight $\%$) fed on Super Selco and ESP-SR including Erythrobacter sp. S$\pi$-1 was higher than that in rotifer fed marine Chlorella, the growth of the slime larvae fed the former showed better than the latter. And the ratio of DHA and highly unsaturated fatty acid (n-3 HUFA) to fatty acids in Artemia (dry weight $\%$) enriched by ESP-A including Erythrobacter sp. S$\pi$-1 were also higher than those in Artemia enriched by others or Artemia without enrichment. Larvae fed on Artemia enriched by ESP-A showed better growth and survival rate than those fed on Artemia enriched by others or Artemia without enrichment. With regard to dietary value of Erythrobacter sp. S$\pi$-1, its use could improve the quality of the live foods for the slime flounder larvae.
A study was carried out to investigate the bacteria during the Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation. The results were summarized as follows ; 1) The bacteria were isolated total 65 strains from the Natrual Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation in $37^{\circ}C$ incubator ; 37 strains from sample K with rise straw and 28 strains from sample steamed soy bean only. 2) In first screening, 15 strains were selected by super protease among them ; 8 strains from K and 7 strains from S. 3) In second screening, No. K-27 and No.S-16 were selected as the best strains for the Chung Kook-Jang fermentation. by panel-test among the first screenings. 4) No. K-27 and No. S-16, the selected best strains were classified nad identified as variation of Bacillus subtilis by Bergey's manual.
Aphids are a large group of hemipteran pests that affect the physiology, growth, and development of plants by using piercing mouthparts to consume fluids from the host. Based an recent data, aphids modulate the microbiomes of plants and thereby affect the overall outcome of the biological interaction. However, in a few reports, aboveground aphids manipulate the metabolism of the host and facilitate infestations by rhizosphere bacteria (rhizobacteria). In this study, we evaluated whether aphids alter the plant resistance that is mediated by the bacterial community of the root system. The rhizobacteria were affected by aphid infestation of pepper, and a large population of gram-positive bacteria was detected. Notably, Paenibacillus spp. were the unique gram-positive bacteria to respond to changes induced by the aphids. Paenibacillus polymyxa E681 was used as a rhizobacterium model to assess the recruitment of bacteria to the rhizosphere by the phloem-sucking of aphids and to test the effect of P. polymyxa on the susceptibility of plants to aphids. The root exudates secreted from peppers infested with aphids increased the growth rate of P. polymyxa E681. The application of P. polymyxa E681 to pepper roots promoted the colonization of aphids within 2 days of inoculation. Collectively, our results suggest that aphid infestation modulated the root exudation, which led to the recruitment of rhizobacteria that manipulated the resistance of peppers to aphids. In this study, new information is provided on how the infestation of insects is facilitated through insect-derived modulation of plant resistance with the attraction of gram-positive rhizobacteria.
Bacteria exist everywhere and continuously come into contact with daily surroundings and humans. Super bacterium methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, resistant to methicillin, has recently appeared. The morbidity and rate of death associated with super bacteria infection has increased. This study investigated the antibacterial activity of fabrics naturally dyed with Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves extract against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Fabrics were left for 15 min in a natural dyeing solution prepared by extraction from C. obtusa leaves using 11.3% (o.w.f) with a fixed liquor ratio of 1:22 at $40^{\circ}C$. The dyeing process was conducted using three different mordants; subsequently, the K/S value of the dyed fabrics increased in the order of None < Cu < Fe < Al. The color fastness property of the fabrics to washing, dry-cleaning, and rubbing was found to be excellent and ranked in the 4-5 grade. The color fastness to light of natural dyeing is low in most cases and has the problem that the dye color soon becomes bleached. Yet, in most cases cloth dyed with retinispora leaves, the color fastnezz to light was good with a third to fourth grade. Non-mordant fabrics, aluminum mordants, and copper mordants also showed better antibacterial properties (99.9% reduction) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, compared to the control fabrics. The dyed fabrics showed the same antibacterial activity even after three washes. The results highlight the strong potential of fabrics naturally dyed with C. obtusa-extract as a medicinal material with excellent antibacterial function against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Used disposable diapers have been considered for a long time as a type of waste difficult to recycle and valorize due to their composite nature including plastic, cellulose pulp, a super absorbent polymer and either urine, feces or both. Therefore, the fate of disposed diapers often is either incineration or landfill burial which both have various adverse environmental impacts. However, used disposable diapers contain nutrients: cellulose is an organic matter while urine and feces contain non negligible amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are primary nutrients included in most chemical fertilizers used in agriculture. In a scope of waste recycling and valorization, this study focuses on developing a method to achieve nutrient solution extraction from used disposable diapers. The experiment essentially consists in shredding the diapers and letting them macerate in solutions of sodium hydroxide with various concentrations to allow breaking down of the cellulose and super absorbent polymer and release of urine and feces before sterilizing the solutions in an autoclave to remove potential coliform bacteria. At the end of the experiment, a set of parameters is measured for the final solution to identify concentrations of nutrients as well as presence or absence of harmful substances. Results are discussed and directions for future studies are suggested, which include mechanization of the diapers shredding process or added aeration to enhance nitrification and absorption of extracted nutrients from plants.
Plant leaf surface is an important niche for diverse epiphytic microbes, including bacteria and fungi. Plant leaf surface plays a critical frontline defense against pathogen infections. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a starch-based super-absorbent polymer(SAP) combination, which enhances water potential and nutrient availability to plant leaves. We evaluated the effect of SAP on the maintenance of bacterial populations. In order to monitor bacterial populations in situ, a SAP mixture containing Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci that expressed recombinant green fluorescent protein(GFPuv) was spray-challenged onto whole leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana. The SAP combination treatment enhanced bacterial robustness, as indicated by disease severity and incidence. Unexpectedly, bacterial numbers were not significantly different between leaves treated with the SAP combination and those treated with water alone. Furthermore, young leaves treated with the SAP combination had more severe symptoms and a greater number of bacterial spots caused by primary and secondary infections compared to young leaves treated with the water control. In contrast, bacterial cell numbers did not statistically differ between the two groups, which indicated that measurement of viable GFP-based bacterial spots may provide a more sensitive methodology for assessing virulence of bacterial pathogens than methods that require dilution plating following maceration of bacterial-inoculated leaf tissue. Our study suggests that the SAP combination successfully increased bacterial aggressiveness, which could either be used to promote the ability of biological agents to control weedy plants or increase the robustness of saprophytic epiphytes against competition from potentially harmful microbes.

Objectives: We aimed to compare the sampling performance of different flow-based impactor samplers for collecting fungal spores and bacteria and to explore the association of the level of bioaerosols with activity patterns of occupants in daycare center settings. Methods: For comparison of sampling performance, two different flow-based samplers (greater than 100 L/min or not) were selected; a low flow-based sampler (one-stage Andersen sampler) and two high flow-based samplers (DUO SAS SUPER 360 sampler, BUCK bio-culture sampler). We collected airborne mold and bacteria in 30 daycare centers with various levels of contaminated air. Three repeat samplings per each sampler were performed. Mold and bacteria were grown for 96 hours at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and 48 hours at $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, respectively. The Andersen and SAS samplers were used for investigating the association between the level of bioaerosols and the activity patterns of occupants in daycares. Particular matters 10($PM_{10}$), temperature, and relative humidity were monitored as well. Samplings were carried out with one-hour interval from 9 to 5 O'clock. For statistical comparisons, Kruskal-Wallis test, Wilcoxon's signed rank test, and multiple regression analysis were carried out. Results: The airborne level of molds by the low flow-based sampler were significantly higher than that of high flow-based samplers (indoor, P=0.037; outdoor, P=0.041). However, no statistical difference was observed in the airborne level of bacteria by each sampler. Also the level of bioaerosols varied by the time, particularly with different activity patterns in daycare centers. The higher level of mold and bacteria were observed in play time in indoor. Similarly, the concentrations of $PM_{10}$ were significantly associated with the level of bioaerosols (P<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the flow rate of sampler, rather than total air volume, could be able to affect the results of sampling. Also, the level of airborne mold and bacteria vary behavior patterns of occupants in indoor of daycare settings. Therefore, different samplers with other flow rate may be selected for mold or bacteria sampling, and activity patterns should be considered for bioaerosol sampling as well.
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlations of oral myofunction and oral environment for the elderly with systemic diseases and to suggest need to improve oral health for the elderly. Data were collected from 64 elderly over the age of 65, from April to June 2019. Data were surveyed on general characteristics, oral myofunction, oral health-related quality of life, oral bacteria. Analysis was performed using PASW Statistics ver 18.0. The subjects were 43.8% systemic diseases, among them 40.6 percent of the people with more than two. The number of functional teeth was 18.6. Age was negatively correlated with functional teeth(r=-.384, p<.01) and tongue pressure (r=-).104, p<.001). Tongue pressure was a positive correlation with lip force(r=.279, p<.05). Age and total number of bacteria was negative correlation(r=-.336, p<.01). The functional teeth and total number of bacteria was positive correlation(r=.551, p<.001). The number of systemic diseases and total number of bacteria was positive correlation(r=.327, p<.01) the analysis of oral myofunction and oral bacteria in older patients with systemic diseases It was meaningful in suggesting a plan to improve oral health for the elderly. A practical policy plan was required to improve the quality of oral health life in a super-aged society.
We sought to study the qualities and scientific benefits of Dongchimi, a traditional Korean food. We compared and analyzed ingredients used for the appearance and storability of dongchimi - honggot (Brassica juncea czerniak et coss), cockscomb (Celosia cristata L.), and beet Beta vulgaris L.). We specifically examined the antioxidative and antibacterial activity of pigments from extracts of these ingredients. Distilled water ($H_2O$) and 1% citric acid were used to safely extract pigments. The antioxidative activity of the pigments was then measured for total phenolic compounds, SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase), and EDA (Electron Donation Ability) by DPPH. The antibacterial activity of was also assessed by a Paper disc solution. Our results show that the pigments had sufficient antioxidative activity and had antibacterial properties against Gram positive and negative bacteria. In particular, Cockscomb (used for enhancing color) contained the highest amount of polyphenol compounds and had the most efficient antioxidative activity.
