Sulfuric Acid Treatment of Sapphire Substrates for Growth of High-Quality Epilayers

  • The chemical etching of sapphire substrates was peformed to produce smooth surfaces on an atomic scale. The sapphire sur-face etched by using a $H_2$S $O_4$ solution showed a pit-free morphology and was yen smooth as much as $\sigma$$_{rms}$=0.13 nm, that etched by using a mixture of $H_2$S $O_4$ and $H_3$P $O_4$ contained large pits with $\sigma$$_{rms}$=0.34 nm. The $\sigma$$_{rms}$’s and the number of the pits increased with increasing etching temperature. The sapphire etched by using $H_2$S $O_4$ at 32$0^{\circ}C$ had the best surface. These results provide important information on the effects of etching treatment on the structural properties of sapphire for the growth of high-quality epilayers.ayers.

  • The processes for the preparation of ZnO powder by using EAF(electric arc furnace)dust was studied by wetting method which are divided to two steps, carried out of the elution processes by various concentrations of sulfuric acid is reacted with EAF dust as the former, and the latter were performed by a number of specified processes, which are leaching process depends on various pH, cementation, ozone and heat treatment processes etc. Experimental results showed that the appropriate pH range is pH7.5~8.0 and the resulting zinc content is range of 37~38%, the residual quantities of the heavy metals are less than 3ppm individually by cementation process except Mn, even though the Mn metal could not be removed by cementation process but was removed up to 0.2ppm by the ozone process from 70ppm initially. Finally, 80.2% of ZnO was obtained by the heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$.

A Study on the Sulfonation of Persimmon Tannin (감타닌의 술폰화에 관한 연구)

  • To get the proper treatment conditions, sulfonation reactions of persimmon tannin with sodium sulfite and sulfuric acid were proceeded in various settings, respectively. Also, the property changes were investigated by carrying out the additional analysis: elementary analysis and instrumental analysis using FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. The degree of $-SO_3Na$ substitutions appeared 0.216 and 0.208 under the treatment time of 3 hours and 6 hours, respectively and the degree of $-SO_3H$ substitutions indicated 0.200 and 0.167 under 9 hours and 18 hours, respectively by elemental analysis. In terms of the FT-IR spectras, there was a peak based on the bonds of pyran ring and ether in relation to non-treated and sulphonated tannin at $1,102cm^{-1}$. No peak was shown in the sulfited tannin. An absorption peak which was due to the $C{\rightarrow}O$ of secondary -OH group became evident in nontreated and sulfited tannin at $1,092cm^{-1}$ and $1,090cm^{-1}$, respectively but the same result was not found in sulphonated tannin. The results of TGA analysis of the sulfonated persimmon tannin showed that the sulfonation of it improved thermal properties.

Breaking Physical Dormancy with Sulfuric Acid in Seeds of Lespedeza tomentosa (Thunb.) Siebold ex Maxim (황산처리를 이용한 개싸리 종자의 물리적 휴면 타파)

  • Lespedeza species are mainly used for wildlife food and cover and for erosion control. The germination of these species can be enhanced after a fire occurrence in forest, which is known as fire-activated seeds to germinate. While the heat treatment could break seed dormancy of Lespedeza, its germination rate was quite low. We investigated that chemical scarification could promote germination of L. tomentosa. Seeds were soaked in 100% sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, and 384 min, and then washed in distilled water for 24 h. Very few seeds were germinated in control (H2SO4 for 0 min). More than 90% of seeds were germinated in H2SO4 for 24, 48, and 92 min. However, some damage was observed in roots and cotyledons of seedling dipped in H2SO4 for a long time. To search the optimal soaking time in H2SO4 without defects, seeds scarified in H2SO4 for 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, and 300 min were sown the commercial soil medium. Seeds treated with H2SO4 for 90 min and 150 min emerged by about 92% and 84%, respectively. Therefore, H2SO4 treatment could break the seed dormancy of Lespedeza species, and especially in case of L. tomentosa the optimal treatment time in sulfuric acid was one to two hours. Germination of L. tomentosa began promptly following the scarification and was completed within about one month, indicating that seeds has no physiological dormancy, just has physical dormancy.

A Study on the Removal of Low-concentration Fluoride-ion by Modified Alumina (변형 알루미나를 이용한 저농도 불소이온 제거 연구)

  • The typical treatment method for fluoride polluted water is the flocculation and precipitation method which usually is capable of reducing the fluoride concentration down to the level of about 10 ppm. However, this method is no longer effective for the treatment of contaminated water having less than 10 ppm of fluorides. To remove fluorides in polluted water from the fluoride concentration between 1 to 10 ppm, several adsorbents were prepared mainly based on an activated alumina and the fluoride removal efficiencies of the adsorbents were analyzed. The best fluoride removal efficiency was obtained when the activated alumina treated by sulfuric acid was used as the adsorbent. A proper calcination temperature for the sulfuric acid contained activated alumina was found to be about $500^{\circ}C$. An adsorption isotherm for the adsorbent was also obtained by using Freundlich model. The values of the constants in Freundlich isotherm model were calculated to be K=6.63 and 1/n=0.29 based on the results obtained from the series of batch type adsorption experiments.

The Reduction of Waterworks Sludge by Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment (과산화수소 산화처리에 의한 정수슬러지의 감량화)

  • The effects of hydrogen peroxide treatment on the reduction of waterworks sludge were investigated in this study. Sludge treated by peroxidation $H_2O_2$ oxidation) was dewatered using a pressure filter at 3atm. It was observed that $H_2O_2$ treatment at the acidic condition significantly reduce both cake water content and specific resistance to filtration (SRF), indicating the enhancement of dewaterability and filterability. The filterability by hydrogen peroxide treatment at pH 3.5 was better than acidic treatment and became comparable with polymer conditioning. The sludge filterability evaluated by SRF was optimal at a dose 2ml $H_2O_2$/sludge($0.02g\;H_2O_2/gTS$) after adjusting of pH to 3.5. The $H_2O_2$ oxidation at pH 3.5 also produced even more dewatered cake when compared with polymer conditioning. The reduction rate of sludge mass at an optimal condition showed 34% compared with untreated sludge. The effects of peroxidation on sludge properties including zeta potential, bound water and particle size were also evaluated. Peroxidation at the acidic condition reduced both bound water and zeta potential. By $H_2O_2$ combined with sulfuric acid leached iron caused Fenton's reaction, which showed a potential to significantly reduce the amount of solids mass and to produce more compact cake with higher filterability.

  • Dracocephalum argunense Fischer ex Link (Labiatae) is a perennial herbaceous plant used as valuable materials for ornamentals, honey production, and pharmaceutics. Since seed germination of this species was quite difficult, present studies were conducted to improve the germination rate by subjecting the seeds to various environmental conditions (temperature and light) and treatments (scarification, priming and seed coating). Optimum temperature for adequate germination was 20$^{\circ}C$ though it ranged from 15$^{\circ}C$ to 25$^{\circ}C$, and low temperature treatment improved germination rate. Light was required for higher germination rate in this species. The scarification of seeds resulted in much higher germination, especially by the physical treatment with sandpaper or chemical treatment with sulfuric acid for 30 seconds. Various primers with different concentrations were treated on the seeds and it was demonstrated that low temperature enhanced germination rate, regardless of kinds and concentrations of the primers. Three treatment combinations of the primers, 0.5 mM $GA_{3}$ treated for 48 hours, 0.5 mM IAA for 24 hours, and 1.0 mM IAA for 24 hours, increased the seed germination rate profoundly. Soaking treatment of inorganic salts, $KNO_{3}$ and $KH_{3}PO_{4}$, promoted germination when seeds were subjected to low temperature. Water soluble primers such as sucrose at 0.5 and 3% concentration and solid primer talc powder were effective in enhancing germination rate.

Effects of Artificial Acin Rain on Seed Germination, Growth and Needle of Several Conifers(2) (인공산성우가 몇 침엽수종의 종자발아, 생장 및 침엽에 미치는 영향(2))

  • Artificial acid rain (pH 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and ground was treated on the seeded pots of 4 species to examine its effects on germination and survival rate, seedling growth and contact angles on needle surface. Artificial acid rain was prepared by diluting sulfuric acid with ground water and ground water (pH 6.5) was used as control. Artificial acid rain was sprayed to seeded pots two or three times per week for growing season, one times per week for winter seasons. About 5mm of artificial acid rain was treated each time from early April, 1991 to early October, 1993. Germination and survival rate, soil acidity, seedling growth and contact angles on the needle surface were measured and compared among the treatments. The results were summarized as follows ; Artificial acid rain might have positive effects on growth-related characteristics of the seedlings in the first and second year of acid rain treatment, and the effects were differed among four species. All growth-related characteristics of the seedlings in third year, however, decreased with decrease of pH values of artificial acid rain. This was considered to the results of acidic accumulation over soil buffer capacity. Needle injury and biomass (defoliation) was correlated with the pH values of artificial acid rain, and this character might be a good criteria for early diagnosis of acid rain injury. The differences of soil acidity were significant among the treatments for all species. Contact angles between needle surface and water droplet decreased with decrease of pH values of artificial acid rain. Measuring and comparing contact angles might be very good criteria for early diagnosis of acid rain injury.

Effect of Characteristic Change in Natural Graphite according to Complex Purification Process on Anode Performance for Lithium Ion Battery (복합 정제 공정에 따른 천연 흑연의 물리화학적 특성 변화가 리튬 이온 전지의 음극재 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • A purification process was performed for the application of natural graphite as an anode material. The influence of the structural change and impurity content of graphite according to the process on the anode electrochemical characteristics was investigated. Natural graphite was chemically/physically purified by acid-treatment which used different amounts of solution of ammonium fluoride/sulfuric acid in the same ratio and thermal treatment used different temperatures (800~2500 ℃). Acid-treatment had limitation to remove impurities, and identified that all impurity contents was removed except some traces of atom such as Si by after progressed thermal-treatment until 2500 ℃. The anode materials characteristic of graphite treated by purification process was improved, and changes in the structure and impurity contents affected dominantly the capacity, rate property and initial Coulombic efficiency. Consequently, the complex purification process improved the graphite structure and also the performance of lithium ion battery by controlling the excessive formation of solid electrolyte interphase and expanding Li+ insertion space originated from the effective removal of impurities.

The Effect of Current on Characteristics of Stellite 12 Alloy Overlayer by PTA Process (PTA법에 의한 스텔라이트 12 합금 육성층의 특성에 미치는 전류의 영향)

  • Stellite 12 alloy-powders were overlaid on 410 stainless steel valve seat using plasma transferred arc(PTA) process. Variation of the microstructure, hardness, wear and corrosion of overlaid deposit with current change was investigated. The deposit showed hypoeutectic microstructure, which was consisted of primary cobalt dendrite and networked $M_7C_3$ type eutectic carbides. As current increased, the amount of eutectic carbide decreased and its dendritic secondary arm spacing increased. Hardness of the deposit was decreased with increase of current. Stress relief heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for two hours resulted in slight increase of hardness in the deposit and showed uniform hardness distribution in base metal without any hardened layer in HAZ. Specific wear decreased with increase of sliding distance. The deposit of high hardness with a lot of eutectic carbide showed relatively low specific wear. Initial corrosion current density of the deposit in 0.1N sulfuric acid was lower than those of 410 stainless steel, and showed a little variation with PTA current.
