Levulinic acid (LA) derived from cellulosic biomass, serves a crucial intermediate that can be used in various chemical conversions. This study focused on optimizing the production of LA using two types of pretreated rice husk (de-ashed and delignificated cellulosic biomass) in a batch reaction system through catalytic conversion with sulfuric acid. To determine the optimal conditions, the conversions of glucose and α-cellulose were examined to compare the effects of pretreatment on the rice husk. The experimental parameters covered a broad spectrum, including temperatures ranging from 140℃ to 200℃, a reaction time was up to 600 minutes, and a substrate to catalyst (acid solution) ratio of 100 g/L. The highest LA yield was 44.8%, achieved from de-ashed rice husk with 3.0 wt.% of sulfuric acid at 180℃ and with a reaction time of 180 minutes. In the case of the delignificated rice husk, a LA yield of 43.6% was obtained with 3.0 wt.% of sulfuric acid at 200℃ and with reaction time of 30 minutes.
This study was conducted to evaluate the resistance of heat-treated wood using the catalyst to decay caused by fungi for sapwood and heartwood of two tree species, Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), respectively. Wood samples were immersed for 10 min in sulfuric acid (7.5%) and then heat-treated at $130^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. Fomitopsis palustris, a brown-rot fungus, was used to examine the decay resistance of Korean red pine and Japanese larch wood. Weight and density of wood from the all conditions increased after heat treatment using the catalyst. Weight loss after decay resistance test was also dropped with a heat treatment. The lowest weight loss indicated at heat-treated heartwood of Japanese larch. Heat treatment using the catalyst effectively increased the resistance of wood to decay caused by fungi.
The effects of phenol during ethylene carbonate (EC) liquefaction of pine bark in the presence of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) as a catalyst were investigated. Liquefaction of pine bark using EC in the presence of acid catalyst was very difficult in comparison to wood. Mixing ethylene glycol (EG) with EC improved the liquefaction process, but the maximum liquefaction yield did not exceed 78%. Mixing 20~30% phenol with EC was very effective for the liquefaction and the residue was remarkably decreased. More than 95% of liquefaction was achieved when about 30% phenol was mixed with EC. The reaction conditions, such as catalyst concentration, liquefaction temperature and time, type of catalyst and liquefying agent, had a great influence on the liquefaction process. The results of the average molecular weights and the amount of combined phenols for the liquefied products indicated that sulfuric acid (SA) causes high condensation reactions compared to MSA.
Characteristics of the transesterification reaction between triglycerides in soy bean oil and methanol were investigated in the presence of acid catalysts. such as sulfuric acid and PTS (p-toluene sulfonic acid). Concentrations of diglyceride and monoglyceride which were intermediates in the reaction mixtures, were far below 10% of triglyceride under any reaction conditions. Thus, conversion of the reaction could be determined from the concentration of triglyceride. Dried PTS had more superior catalytic power than sulfuric acid for transesterification reaction between soy bean oil and methanol. When transesterification reaction of soy bean oil was catalyzed by 1 wt% of PTS at methanol stoichiometric mole ratio of 2 and $65^{\circ}C$, final conversion reached 95% within 48 hours. If FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) was added into reaction mixture of soy bean oil, methanol and PTS catalyst, it converted reaction mixture into homogeneous phase, and substantially increased reaction rate. When reaction mixture was freely boiling which had equal volumetric amount of FAME to soy bean oil, methanol stoichiometric mole ratio of 2 and 1 wt% of PTS, final conversion achieved value of 94% and temperature approached to $110^{\circ}C$ within 2 hours.

When alkaline waste water of PET fabric is treated with sulfuric acid, undegradable material, crude TPA sludge is generated, so that treatment has a serious problem. The result of DMT synthesis using crude TPA sludge generated from PET alkaline waste water were as follows: 1. When crude TPA generated from alkaline waste water is reactioned with methanol under catalyst of sulfuric acid, pure DMT can be obtained. 2. In DMT synthesis from crude TPA, addition of copper sulfate can increase yield, and increasing the amount of sulfuric acid can shorten reaction time.
A facile and simple procedure for the synthesis of novel and known calix[4]resorcinarene derivatives were developed via a reaction of arylaldehydes with resorcinol in the presence of catalytic amounts of tungstate sulfuric acid (TSA) under solvent-free conditions. This eco-friendly method has many appealing attributes, such as excellent yields, short reactions times, use of safe and recoverable catalyst, and simple work-up procedures. TSA was characterized by powdered X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and FTIR spectroscopy.
CuFeOx/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts are developed for the use in sulfuric acid decomposition which is a subcycle in thermochemical iodine-sulfur cycle to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Both Cu and Fe components are co-precipitated with Al component to enhance distribution of active components. Developed catalysts are improved in the capability of sulfuric acid decomposition and endurance under highly acidic environment compared to commercial catalysts such as Pt/$Al_2O_3$ and $2CuO{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$. Developed CuFeAlOx catalysts exhibited higher sulfuric acid decomposition ability than $2CuO{\cdot}Cr_2O_3$ and longer endurance trends than Pt/$Al_2O_3$ maintaining comparable performance, respectively.
