The purity of gypsum and quantitation of impurities of flue gas gypsum will not only play an important role in deciding of the optimal condition during a trial run of FGD (flue gas desulfurization), but also can be utilized in quality control of gypsum. The purity of gypsum can be determined from combined water, sulfur trioxide and calcium concentration. We found that the thermal analysis by TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) was the most accurate and convenient method to determine the purity of gypsum. This method will be done in a hour and the results were reproducible. On the other hand, the best way of the analysis of impurities in gypsum was fusion method using $LiBO_2$ as a fusion agent. We also determined the amount of $CO_2$ gas to analyze magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate contents. The analyses of combined water by TGA, fusion method followed by ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectroscopy) and determination of $CO_2$ amount can lead to more accurate and convenient method for gypsum analysis.

This study aims to develop an analysis model using a commercial process simulator-ASPEN PLUS for an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system consisting a dry coal feeding, oxygen-blown entrained gasification process by Shell, a low temperature gas clean up process, a General Electric MS7001FA gas turbine, a three pressure, natural recirculation heat recovery steam generator, a regenerative, condensing steam turbine and a cryogenic air separation unit. The comparison between those results of this study and reference one done by other engineer at design conditions shows consistency which means the soundness of this model. The greater moisture contents in Illinois#6 coal causes decreasing gasifier temperature and the greater ash and sulfur content hurt system efficiency due to increased heat loss. As the results of sensitivity analysis using developed model for the parameters of gasifier operating pressure, steam/coal ratio and oxygen/coal ratio, the gasifier temperature increases while combustible gases (CO+H2) decreases throughout the pressure going up. In the steam/coal ratio analysis, when the feeding steam increases the maximum combustible gas generation point moves to lower oxygen/coal ratio feeding condition. Finally, for the oxygen/coal ratio analysis, it shows oxygen/coal ratio 0.77 as a optimum operating condition at steam/coal feeding ratio 0.2.
In Climate change is a global issue that requires global responses. As a key factor in climate change, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have attracted increasing attention the international community. One of the crucial global efforts to alleviate climate change is the establishment of an international climate change regime, comprising rules, norms, principles, procedures that are applicable to a wide range of activities. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) received a mandate from the Kyoto Protocol to regulate shipping GHG emissions. However, the IMO Convention and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea also provide regulations on regarding GHG emissions. To execute its mandate, the IMO has developed various regulatory initiatives. In addition, the Chinese government has declared new regulations which designate parts of its coastal waters as emission control areas (ECA). Owing to the growing recognition of the benefits of ECA, ships, including ocean-going vessels that operate in areas near the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and the Bohai Sea will be obliged to use fuel containing less than 0.5% sulfur. China's shipping industry is playing a growing role in the international shipping market, and its response to these initiatives will have a substantial effect on the future application of these regulations. This study analyzed the GHG mandates of the IMO and the Chinese government, and then examines the main outcomes that have been achieved.
In this study, analytical characteristics of S gas detection technique were investigated against four major reduced S compounds (including hydrogen sulfide; methyl mercaptan; dimethyl sulfide (DMS); and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)). To analyze such properties, an analytical system was constructed by combining the GC/PFPD system with the loop injection method. The results of our analysis indicated that response behavior of S gases differs greatly between compounds; H2S exhibited the weakest sensitivity of all compounds, while DMDS with two S-atom compounds the strongest sensitivity. To learn more about their response behavior on GC/PFPD method, their calibration patterns were compared using the three arbitrarily set concentration ranges of low, intermediate, and high. The results showed that calibration patterns of each compound are distinguished because of different factors. There was a line of evidence that calibration of $H_2S$ was affected noticeably by adsorptive loss within the system, whereas those of DMS and DMDS were influenced most sensitively by such factor as the linearity response at a given PMT voltage setting. The overall results of our study suggest that quantification of malordorous S compounds require a better knowledge of compound-specific response behavior against GC detection.
We, for the first time, retrieved sulfur dioxide (SO2) vertical column density (VCD) in industrial and volcanic areas from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) using the Principle component analysis(PCA) algorithm. Furthermore, SO2 VCDs retrieved by the PCA algorithm from TROPOMI raw data were compared with those retrieved by the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) algorithm (TROPOMI Level 2 SO2 product). In East Asia, where large amounts of SO2 are released to the surface due to anthropogenic source such as fossil fuels, the mean value of SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA (DOAS) algorithm was shown to be 0.05 DU (-0.02 DU). The correlation between SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA algorithm and those retrieved by the DOAS algorithm were shown to be low (slope = 0.64; correlation coefficient (R) = 0.51) for cloudy condition. However, with cloud fraction of less than 0.5, the slope and correlation coefficient between the two outputs were increased to 0.68 and 0.61, respectively. It means that the SO2 retrieval sensitivity to surface is reduced when the cloud fraction is high in both algorithms. Furthermore, the correlation between volcanic SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA algorithm and those retrieved by the DOAS algorithm is shown to be high (R = 0.90) for cloudy condition. This good agreement between both data sets for volcanic SO2 is thought to be due to the higher accuracy of the satellite-based SO2 VCD retrieval for SO2 which is mainly distributed in the upper troposphere or lower stratosphere in volcanic region.
This study was conducted to determine the toxic effects of air pollutants on landscaping trees, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraierasis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodeytdron tulipifera, Platanus occidentalis and their resistance to the pollutant toxicity in urban and industrial regions of Seoul and Taejon, Korea. Total sulfur content and superoxide dismutase activity were analysed in tree foliage of Pinus densiflora, Pinzes koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera, Platanus occidentalis. In addition, SOD activity was analyzed in the foliage of tree seedlings, i.e. Pinus densijlora, Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera, with the lurnigation of $SO_2$ in gas chamber 4 hours a day for six days. In all species total sulfur content and SOD activity had a positive correlation. Air pollutants accumulated in tree tissues were supposed to enhance the enzyme activity like SOD providing with the resistance mechanisms. Trees under the air pollution stress increased enzyme activity to develop internal self-resistance against pollutants, but after a critical point enzyme-activity decreased gradually and resulting in injury after all, Deciduous trees had greater filtration capacity than conifers and coniferous trees showed greater resistance against air pollutants than deciduous species. Foliage SOD activity was higher in polluted area than in unpolluted area for most species. Coniferous species and mature trees had higher SOD activity than deciduous seedlings. Especially Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba and Plcatanus occidentalis had higher SOD activity than other species. The tree species with the high SOD activity showed strong resistance against air pollutants. In 2nd-year needles of Pinus densiflora seedlings and current and 2nd-year needles of Pinus koraiensis seedlings containing high native SOD activity, SOD activity increased with the increase of $SO_2$ level. But in seedlings containing low native SOD activity, SOD activity increased at 0.5ppm $SO_2$ level while it decreased at 1.5 and 2.5ppm $SO_2$. Changes of SOD activity was different between species and in most species SOD seemed to participate in resistance mechanism.
In this study, the emission characteristics of volatile and odorant species released from salted meat product (Spam) was investigated as a function of time. Gas samples released from Spam samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOC) and sulfur compounds (RSC) at five different times for the elapsed (E) days of 0, 1, 3, 6, and 9 (E-0 to E-9) by GC/MS and GC/PFPD system, respectively. Results indicated that reduced sulfur, aldehyde, and ketone groups were the dominant odorants. Especially, hydrogen sulfide was the predominant in concentration and odor activity value (OAV) during the fresh stage. Its concentration was 1465 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (60.0% of the total mass) in E-0 and 455 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (28.0%) in E-1, while its OAV was 19.4 (78.3%: E-0) and 6.02 (41.7%: E-1). On the other hand, the concentration of acetone showed the maximum values in the decaying stage (E-3: 451 (43.2%), E-6: 369 (64.2%), and E-9: 1150 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (70.2%)). Furthermore, the concentration of 2,3-butanedione was also detected considerably from decaying sample (E-3: 17.6 (1.68%), E-6: 16.1 (2.80%), and E-9: 179 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (10.9%)). However, OAV of acetone was insignificant (<0.01%) in the decaying stage, while that of 2,3-butanedione was relatively high in the range of 1.14-11.6 (14.5-76.2% of ${\Sigma}OAV$). It thus confirmed that the major odorant groups generated from Spam samples changed with the progress of decay such as sulfur (fresh stage), aldehyde (intermediate stage), and ketone compounds (decaying stage).
Background: Effect of sulfur dioxide($SO_2$) exposure on airway is well known but little about the effect of $SO_2$ exposure on lung parenchyme. This study is to determine if short tenn exposure to $SO_2$ in concentration commonly found in industrialized environment cause potentially harmful effect on the lung parenchyme, and to evaluate the exposure time-response relationship between short tenn exposure to $SO_2$ and the inflammatory response in mouse lung. Method: 5ppm $SO_2$ gas was used and 48 mice were grouped into control(10), 30(9), 60(11), and 120 minute exposure(18) group. In each group, bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) was done immediately after and at 1,2,3 days after exposure. Histological examination was performed in control and 120 minute exposure group. Results: 1) Cell response in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In 30 and 60 minute exposure group, compared to the control group, lymphocyte count has significantly increased(p<0.05) at 1 day after exposure but did not differ at 2 days after exposure. In 120 minute exposure group, also compared to the control group, there was significant increase in total cell, macrophage, and lymphocyte count at 1 day after exposure, (p<0.05) which lasted for 2 days but did not significantly differ at 3 days after exposure. 2) Histological findings in 120 minute exposure group. In the airway, mild epithelial cell damage and ciliary loss were noted but there was no evidence of inflammatory cell infiltration. Interstitial inflammatory infiltration was noted at 1 day after exposure, which lasted for 3 days after exposure and there was no evidence of edema or fibrosis in the interstitium Conclusions: These data indicate potentially noxious effect of $SO_2$ on the lung parenchyme as well as the airway at exposure level that are regarded as relatively safe, and the duration of injury depends on the exposure time.
To comply with stricter regulations provoked by increasing odor nuisance, it is imperative to practice effective odor control for sustainable livestock production. This study was conducted to assess odor and odorous compounds emitted from liquid animal manure with different treatment methods such as Fresh Manure(without treatment, FM), Anaerobic Digestion(AD) and Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion(TAD) and their application to soil. Air samples were collected at the headspace of liquid manure, upland and paddy soil, and analyzed for odor intensity and offensiveness using an olfactometry; odor concentration index using odor analyser; nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia(NH3) using fluorescence method; and sulfur containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide(H2S), methyl mercaptan(MeSH), dimethyl sulfide(DMS) and dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) using gas chromatography-pulsed flame photometric detector, respectively. Odor intensity, offensiveness and concentration index from TAD liquid manure was statistically lower than those from FM and AD(p<0.01). Mean concentrations of H2S, MeSH, DMS, DMDS and NH3 were 65.93ppb, 18.55ppb, 5.26ppb, 0.33ppb and 10.57ppm for liquid manure with AD; and 5.15ppb, 0.97ppb, 0.80ppb, 0.56ppb and 1.34ppm for liquid manure with TAD, respectively. More than 60% of malodorous compounds related to nitrogen and sulfur were removed by heterotrophic microorganisms during TAD treatment. When liquid manure was applied onto upland and paddy soil, NH3 removal efficiencies ranged from 51 to 94% and 22 to 91% for AD and TAD liquid manure, respectively. The above results show that liquid manure with TAD is superior to AD and FM with respect to the odor reduction and odor problem caused by land applied liquid manure is directly related to the degree of odor generated by the manure treatment method.

Ethanol was used as reductant to remove $NO_x$ over Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst via SCR from stationary emission source. Among the tested hydrocarbon reductants, ethanol showed highest de-$NO_x$ performance over the Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. De-$NO_x$ efficiency of about 83% was obtained in the condition of GHSV 20,000 $hr^{-1}$, $NO_x$ 200 ppm, CO 200 ppm, $O_2$ 13%, $H_2O$ 5% and mole ratio of ethanol/$NO_x$ = 2 between temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. While $SO_2$ presence in the $NO_x$ exhaust suppressed the catalytic activity, catalyst with acid (0.7% $H_2SO_4$) treatment of catalyst showed higher catalytic activity, where In-Situ DRIFT showed S presence over catalyst surface was increased after acid treatment of catalyst. From in-situ DRIFT and SCR results, it was concluded that sulfur presence over the surface of Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was the dominant factor to control the de-$NO_x$ reaction yield via HC-SCR from the exhausted gas including $SO_2$.
