Objectives : This study aimed to compare the characteristics of suicide attempts among Korean patients with mixed and non-mixed depression. Methods : Patients who visited the emergency room due to a suicide attempt and participated in the Korean Cohort for the Model Predicting a Suicide and Suicide-related Behavior study were included. Using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), 111 patients were classified into the mixed depression (n=46) and non-mixed depression groups (n=65). The Koukopoulos Mixed Depression Rating Scale (KMDRS) score was calculated using the MADRS and YMRS scores. Suicide attempt characteristics were evaluated using the Columbia Suicidal Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). Results : In the mixed depression group, the reason item among the ideation intensity score of the C-SSRS was higher, and the deterrent item score was lower. Scores on the timing and suicide note items of the SIS were higher, and scores for overt communication items were lower in the mixed depression group. The KMDRS score was positively correlated with the C-SSRS ideation intensity and total SIS score. After adjusting for additional variables, the KMDRS scores had a significant effect on the C-SSRS ideation intensity and total SIS scores. Conclusions : The mixed depression group showed a difference in the intensity of suicidal ideation and suicidal intention compared to those in the non-mixed depression group. The overall suicidal ideation intensity and suicidal intention increased according to the degree of mixed depression.
Purpose: This study was done to examine whether depression, self-esteem, and social support influence suicidal ideation among college students. Methods: Using a correlation study design, participants were recruited from two universities selected by convenience sampling. Data were collected from June 1, to August 31, 2014 from the 206 participants included in the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS / Win 18.0. Results: There was a significant correlation between depression, self esteem, social support, and suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was negatively correlated with self-esteem (r=-.64, p<.001) and social support (r=-.45, p<.001), while, suicidal ideation showed a positive correlation with depression (r=.69, p<.001). The significant predictors related to suicidal ideation were depression, self-esteem, and social support. Conclusion: Findings indicate that sensitively assessing depression in college students and efforts to reduce depression can reduce the risk of suicide. Self-esteem and social support of college students are also important resources for suicide prevention.
This study was based on the 'Escape Theory' model suggested by Baumeister(1990). Based on this analysis framework, this study attempted to examine that complicated direct and indirect effect of school risk factors(risk of academic scores, risk of relation with teacher and risk of peer relation) on suicide ideation in adolescence, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. To this end, this study used the data from the '2008 Gyeongsangbuk-Do youth crisis survey' conducted by the Youth service center in province of Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The target number of this study was 2,335 students in the age group of middle school and high school. The result of the Analysis indicate that risk of relation with teacher among school risk factors was only one which affected directly and indirectly on suicide ideation. The other side, risk of academic scores and risk of peer relation had indirect effects, via negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. In conclusion, this study confirmed that school risk factors had effects on suicide ideation directly or indirectly, they were complicatedly connected, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. Therefore, Prevention program for adolescence' suicide ideation or suicide risk require integrated strategies and tactics.
Using data from 2011 Elderly Living Condition Survey database, this study analyzed risk factors for suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. The analysis sample consists of 10,003 cases. The main purpose of this research was to explore the effects of social quality factor on suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. Analysis results show that gender, age, area of residence, living alone, subjective standard of living, activities of daily living(ADLs), and geriatric depression are significant predictors of suicide ideation. Key findings are that social quality factor such as experiencing feeling hurt from others' words and actions like avoiding conversations, disregarding one's opinions, pretending to be not heard, getting irritated, grumbling, etc. has the largest effects on suicide ideation. Analysis results imply that without improving social quality, it would not be possible to lower elderly suicide rate.

Korea has the highest suicide rate among the OECD countries, and the suicide rate is highest among young adults in their 20s, most of whom are university students. Therefore, suicide among Korean university students is a public health issue that is of interest to us. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the suicidal ideation of university students in Korea, and to use them as a basis to establish effective intervention for university suicide prevention through it. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study using convenience sampling method. The participants were 344 university students at universities in S and G cities. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analysis using with the SPSS/Win 23.0 program. There was a significant correlation between depression (r=.45, p<.001), drinking alcohol (r=.14, p=.008), social support (r=-.26, p<.001), quality of life (r=-.46, p<.001), and suicidal ideation. In the first step of hierarchical regression analysis, satisfaction of school life (${\beta}=.198$, p<.001) was the significant factor influencing the suicidal ideation. Explanatory power was 25.2%. In the second step of the hierarchical regression analysis, absence of parents (${\beta}=-.095$, p=.044), depression (${\beta}=.247$, p<.001), quality of life (${\beta}=-.280$, p<.001), and explanatory power were increased to 42.0%. The results of the study indicate the need to actively identify the group of university students in their 20s with high risk of suicide through continuous evaluation of depression, and to improve the quality of life as a method of preventing suicide. In addition, the effect of absence of parents on the suicidal ideation among Korean university students suggests that parental support may play an important role in suicide prevention.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the use of heated tobacco products (HTP) and suicidal behaviors such as suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts among adolescents in South Korea. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design. Data was from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) performed in 2019 by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Heated tobacco product use was used as a main independent variable and suicide-related behaviors such as suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts were applied as dependent variables. Out of 60,100 students, 57,303 responded. Results: HTP use significantly increased the odds of a suicide attempt and suicide planning among adolescents. After controlling for confounders, when comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 1.78 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.38-2.30) for suicide attempts among adolescents. After controlling the confounders, comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted OR was 1.36 (95% CI: 1.06-1.73) for suicide planning among adolescents. For sadness/despair among adolescents, when comparing 'current HTP users' with 'never HTP users', the adjusted OR was 1.29 (95% CI: 1.11-1.50). However, HTP use had no significant association with suicidal ideation among adolescents. Conclusions: Current HTP users were more likely to attempt to commit suicide, and more likely to plan to commit suicide than never HTP users among adolescents. These results may be useful in developing a scientific basis for designing suicide prevention programs targeting adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the BMI and suicidal ideation using Korean Health Panel data from 2009 to 2013 to identify risk factors for suicide. We conducted a logistic regression analysis using the R statistical package to analyze the relationship between the BMI and the suicidal ideation. The results of this study show that all models with BMI had a statistically significant as a significant variable. It was found that the obese group was more likely to suicide ideation than the other groups. Based on these results, we try to find social implications for suicide prevention and intervention.
Background: This study aimed to demonstrate the importance to recognize subjective body image on their mental health on adolescents. Methods: We used the chi-square test and the multiple logistic regression model to analyze the data of the "Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey in 2018" (n=42,259) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: As a result of the analysis, suicide ideation increased when the subject body image is thin and fat. Especially, the suicide ideation who recognized the subjective body image as thin is higher (odds ratio [OR], 1.666; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.050-1.295), and who recognized the subjective body image as fat is higher (OR, 1.134; 95% CI, 1.032-1.245) than the group who recognized the subjective body image as normal. Conclusion: When preparing a health policy on adolescent suicide issues, we need to consider the association between subjective body image and suicide ideation.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between household types and suicide ideation among elderly people in Korea. We collected information on 220 elderly individuals(aging over 60), 171 of whom were living alone and 49 of whom were living with their families. The results showed that; 1) number of children, health status, level of stress, and depressive symptoms were all related to the suicide ideation among both groups, and 2) individuals living alone had lower sense of control, were more stressed, and more likely to suffer from depression. Based on these results, various implications were discussed and practical suggestions provided.
Objective : There have been limited scientific studies differentiating those who attempt suicide from those who think about suicide but do not attempt suicide. Altered event-related potential (ERP) performance, such as GoNogo ERP has been regarded as the neurocognitive processes associated with behavioral inhibition and poor impulse control. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between Nogo ERP and suicide attempt. Methods : A total of 63 participants (33 participants with suicide ideation and 30 with suicide attempt) were recruited, and performed GoNogo tasks during the electroencephalogram measurement. Depression, anxiety, emotional regulation and impulsivity were evaluated by self-rating scales. The clinical measures and Nogo P3 component were compared between the groups. The correlational analyse was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the clinical characteristics and the Nogo P3 component. Results : Participants with suicide attempt significantly decreased the Nogo P3 amplitudes at the frontal-central electrode than participants with suicide ideation (p=0.004, FDR adjusted p=0.032). In the correlation analysis, the Nogo P3 amplitude at frontal-central electrode was correlated with the total score of the Barrett impulsivity scale (r=-0.383, p=0.002), attentional impulsivity (r=-0.365, p=0.003) and motor impulsivity (r=-0.389, p=0.002) subscales of the Barrett impulsivity scale. Conclusion : These findings suggest that the decreased Nogo P3 amplitude may be one of the candidates of biological marker for poor impulse control in those who attempt suicide.
