To enhance the reliability of a newly designed reciprocating compressor applied in a domestic compressor, accelerated life tests were developed using new definitions of the sample size and the $B_1$ life index. In $1^{st}$ accelerated life testing, the compressor was locked due to the fracture of the suction reed valve. The failure modes and mechanisms of the suction reed valve in the accelerated tests were found to be similar to that of the failed product in the field. The root cause of the failure was the overlap between the suction reed valve and the valve plate in the suction port. The missing parameters in the design phase were modified by expanding the trespan size, introducing tumbling process, changing the material and thickness for the valve, introducing a ball peening and brushing process for the valve plate. In $2^{nd}$ accelerated life testing, the compressor was locked due to the interference between the crank shaft and thrust washer. The corrective plan was to heat treat the crank shaft. The $B_1$ life of the compressor improved from 1.5 to 12.9 years.

In this work, the hydromagnetic and thermal characteristics of natural convection flow in a vertical parallel plate micro-porous-channel with suction/injection is analytically studied in the presence of Hall current by taking the temperature jump and the velocity slip at the wall into account. The governing equations, exhibiting the physics of the flow formation are displayed and the exact analytical solutions have been obtained for momentum and energy equations under relevant boundary conditions. The impact of distinct admissible parameters such as Hartmann number, Hall current parameter, permeability parameter, suction/injection parameter, fluid wall interaction parameter, Knudsen number and wall-ambient temperature ratio on the flow formation is discussed with the aid of line graphs. In particular, as rarefaction parameter on the micro-porous-channel surfaces increases, the fluid velocity increases and the volume flow rate decreases for injection/suction.
A numerical investigation is made of air flow in a spinner equipment used for cleanning and drying flat display panels. A unique feature of the spinner under question is the placement of a torus plate cover over the rotating plate. The turbulent flow is driven by rotation of a large disk and suction by the exhaust system connected to vacuum chamber. The flow is modelled as an axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and computation is conducted by using the FLUENT package with a version of k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The required capacity of the exhaust system is assessed numerically. The usefulness of the cover in controlling air flow circulation is examined. A computational trouble shooting is attempted to resolve the problem of panel rising which occurred in real experiment.
In this paper, a classical gust problem is treated by using the numerical lifting¬-surface theory to verify the effect of gust-a sudden fluctuating fluid velocity around an object, which is normal to the main stream direction-on the hydrody¬namic forces, especially the mean thrust in upstream direction, acting on the two¬-dimensional flat plate. In this case, the mean thrust wholly resorts to the leading edge suction, and it is the same situation to the case of the heaving plate in uniform flow. The ph¬enomenon of leading edge suction is very important for the flapping propulsion of animals, typical to fish and birds, and can be related to the prediction of the hydrodynamic forces acting on marine propellers operating in gustlike wakes of ships. The results of this paper can be easily superposed to those of the reference [1J in order to solve the problem of the two-dimensional oscillacting plate in gust
This study investigates the feasibility of adopting the results of the UC (unconfined compression) test to assess the total cohesion of the unsaturated soil. A series of laboratory tests were conducted on samples of unsaturated lateritic soils of northern Taiwan. Specifically, the unconfined compression test was combined with the pressure plate test to obtain the unconfined compression strength and its matric suction of the samples. Soil samples were first compacted at designated water content and then subjected to the wetting process for saturation and the subsequent drying process to its target suction using the apparatus developed by the authors. The correlations among the matric suction, the unconfined compression strength and the total cohesion were studied. As a result, a simplified method to estimate the total cohesion using the unconfined compressive strength is suggested. The calculated results compare reasonably with the unsaturated triaxial test results. Current results show good performance; however, further study is warranted.

An experimental study was performed on the orifice nozzle system that generates micro-bubbles by air self-suction using a venturi nozzle. This study experimentally investigates the amount of air sucked into the venturi nozzle and the number of micro-bubbles generated by the orifice nozzle system in Cases 1 and 2. The experimental conditions were varied by changing the diameter of the orifice nozzle (d=2~7 mm) and the number of holes of the perforated plate nozzle (n = 2-12). In Case 1, the air self-suction was more than 2 LPM at $d{\leq}4mm$. When d = 4 mm, the total number of bubbles was 29,777, and it was confirmed that micro-bubbles occupied approximately 65% of the total number of bubbles. In Case 2, the air self-suction was maintained constant at approximately 2.5 LPM regardless of the number (n) of holes. The total amount of bubbles increased when n increased but remained constant at approximately 44,000 when $n{\geq}7EA$. It was also confirmed that more than 80% of all bubbles were micro-bubbles when $n{\geq}10EA$. Thus, the number of micro-bubbles increased by approximately 15% compared to the experimental result of Case 1, which was optimized with d = 4 mm.
The influence of wake flow on a flat-plate blade having different shapes near the hailing edge has been investigated in this paper. Two different shapes near the trailing edge namely the pressure surface cutting (TP) and the suction surface cutting (TS) have been used. The calculation has been performed for two different angles of attack (a =10 and 15 degree) in both the cases. RANS equations have been solved using SST-model as a turbulence closure. Cp and CL values obtained for TS are higher compared to those obtained for TP. Also, the vorticity distribution obtained in case of TS is stronger as compared to that obtained in the case of TP The Karmann Vortex is observed in both the cases but it is more clear in TS case. It is found that in the case of TS, flow separation does not occur upto the trailing edge on both the suction and the pressure sides of the blade while in the case of TP, the flow separateson the pressure surface near the trailing edge of the flat-plate blade.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the soil-water characteristic curves for unsaturated soil. To this ends, a series of suction measured test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil which is located in Korea, used the modified pressure plate apparatus. From the test results, the water contents, degree of saturation and volumetric water contents was analyzed with the suction. And was drawn the soil-water characteristic curves was drain from the test results for various factors.

Laboratory model test results for uplift capacity of a circular plate anchors embedded in saturated clayey soils have been presented. Clayey soils used in this study are kaolinite and montmorillonite. Suction effects on the ultimate uplift capacity of plate anchors with respect to various embedment depths of anchor have been considered.
