가리왕산 일대 돌서렁에서의 일차천이 (Primary Succession on Talus Area at Mt. Kariwangsan, Korea)

  • Stages of vegetation development on talus area were studied to examine temporal changes in species composition and vegetation structure, and to elucidate the mechanism of early patch formation. While ground coverage of lichens, which may form substrate for moss colonization and mitigate the heat-stress on rocks, decreased gradully, coverage of mosses increased slightly during primary succession. Ecological role of mossess related with water retention in community may be very important not only at pioneer stage but also at later stages because of little soil development on this talus area. Species diversity and species richness increased during the early stages of succession. Parthenocis년 tricuspidata and Sorbaria sorbifolia var. stellipa dominated in liana stage, Ulmus davidiana for. suberosa and Lindera obtusiloba in shrub stage, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Actinidia arguta in subtree stage, however, was composed of mixed forest of several tree species. U. davidiana for. suberosa, L. obtusiloba, Securinega suffruticosa and Rhus chinensis were relatively important woody species in early patch forming process. The results, however, suggested that early establishment on talus area might be strongly associated with chance for safe-site because both pioneer species and later species could take part in early patch forming process.

Analysis of effects of burning in grasslands with quantifying succession stages by life-history traits in Kirigamine, central Japan

  • To quantitatively analyze the effects of burning, we conducted a vegetation survey in the grasslands in Kirigamine, central Japan. We classified each species into stages of succession based on the life-history traits of the species and defined the score of the species in each stand based on the classification. We weighted the scores with a v-value, the product of coverage and height in the quadrat, and summed them to calculate the index of dynamic status. With these indices, we were able to quantitatively compare the stands in the study area and discern minute differences between the stands with different lengths of restoration periods since the disturbance of burning. These indices correlated with the v-value of trees, suggesting that the disturbance of burning seemed to affect the trees in the stand. We then calculated the growth of the tree species Pinus densiflora to evaluate its contribution to the index of dynamic status.

화전 후 묵밭의 식생 천이에 따른 종다양성 및 식생 구조의 발달 (Changes of Species Diversity and Development of Vegetation Structure during Abandoned Field Succession after Shifting Cultivation in Korea)

  • 강원도 평창군 일대에서 화전 후 묵밭의 식생 천이에 따른 식생 구조의 발달 과정과 종다양성의 변화를 조사하였다. 방치 후 경과 년 수에 따라 최상층부의 키는 초기에 빠르게 증가하고 후기에 안정화하는 경향을 나타내었다. 10, 20, 50 및 80 년차 묵밭에서 최상층부 식생의 키는 각각 4, 8, 18 및 18 m이었다. 교목층, 아교목층, 관목층 및 초본층의 4층 구조를 갖춘 완전한 형태의 숲으로 발달하기까지는 방치 후 약 35년이 경과해야 하는 것으로 추정되었다. 방치 후 경과 년 수에 따라 식생치 Ivc는 로그 함수적으로 그리고 식생치 Hcl은 직선적으로 증가하는 경향이 있었다. 묵밭의 식생천이에서 종다양성은 천이 중기인 $10{\sim}20$년차에서 최고로 증가한 다음 이후 점차 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 본 조사지에서 종다양성은 균등도보다 종풍부도와 매우 밀접한 상관을 나타내었다. 대부분의 목본은 개망초-쑥 단계인 $2{\sim}6$년차에 정착이 이루어져 시간 경과에 따라 이들의 우점도가 변화함으로써 Egler (1954)의 초기 종조성 모델을 따르는 것으로 확인되었다.

  • 강원도 평창군 일대에서 화전 후 묵밭의 식생 천이에 따른 식물량, 순 일차 생산성 및 P/B 비의 변화를 조사하였다. 초본의 지상부 식물량은 5년차 묵밭에서 3.8 ton/ha로 가장 많았다. 낙엽 건중량은 50년차 묵밭까지 증가한 다음 감소하는 포물선형 변화를 나타내었다. 천이가 진행됨에 따라 흉고 단면적은 로그 함수적으로 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 교목의 목본 수는 15년차 묵밭까지 빠르게 증가하다가 경과 년 수에 따라 자가 솎음질 과정을 거쳐 감소하는 경향이었다. 80년차 묵밭에서 DBH 등급에 따른 목본의 분포는 역 J 자형을 나타내었고, 우점종은 신갈나무이었다. 식물 현조량은 천이 초기와 후기 단계에서 완만한 증가를 나타내었고, 중기 단계인 $10{\sim}50$년차 묵밭에서 빠르게 증가하였다. 5, 10, 20, 50 및 80년차 묵밭의 식물 현존량은 각각 5, 14, 75, 251 및 373 ton/ha로 추정되었다. 연간 순 생산성은 초기 35년간 점진적인 증가 후 감소하여 점차 안정화하는 경향을 나타내었다. 연간 순 일차 생산성의 증가 속도는 천이 중기 단계 보다 초기 단계에서 빠르게 증가하였다. 5, 10, 20, 35, 50 및 80년차 묵밭의 순 일차 생산성은 각각 8.6, 9.3, 12.9, 15.1, 13.7 및 3.6 ton/ha/yr이었다. P/B 비율은 천이가 진행됨에 따라 지수 함수적으로 감소하는 것으로 추정되었다. 5, 10, 20, 50 및 80년차 묵밭에서 추정된 P/B 비율은 각각 0.60, 0.39, 0.19, 0.06 및 0.01이었다. 이러한 결과는 Odum(1969)이 제시한 삼림천이 과정의 생물 에너지론과 잘 부합하였다.

Successional Changes in Seed Banks in Abandoned Rice Fields in Gwangneung, Central Korea

  • In order to understand the role of seed banks for restoration, seed banks in abandoned rice fields in the Gwangneung National Arboretum, central Korea were investigated using the seedling emergence method. The study sites represented three stages: an initial stage dominated by forbs such as Persicaria thunbergii and Juncus effuses var. decipiens, a middle stage dominated by Salix, and a late stage dominated by Quercus aliena and Prunus padus (in nearby riparian forest chosen as a reference stand). DCA ordination arranged the stands according to the number of years since abandonment. CCA ordination identified the dominant environmental variables correlated most closely with Axes 1 and 2 as $Mg^{2+}$ (intraset correlation was 0.827) and $K^+$ (intraset correlation was -0.677), respectively. Species richness and diversity decreased from the initial stage (H'=2.61) to the middle (H'=1.79) and late (H'=0.75) stages. A total of 49 species $(/m^2)$ and 18,620 seedlings $(/m^2)$ emerged out of the seed bank samples. The DCA ordination and similarity analysis detected a large discrepancy between the composition of the actual vegetation and the seed bank. We conclude that the contribution of seed bank to restoration is low. However, seed bank may help the recovery of forbs after disturbance. Some of our results are consistent with the tolerance model of succession whereas others follow the trajectory of the facilitation model. More research on succession will be required to understand the underlying mechanisms.

원활한 농장승계와 합리적 농장경영을 위한 교육·훈련과정 개발연구 (The Study on development of Education and Training for smooth succession and rational farm management of family farm)

  • This study is to find the causes of the current situations of conflict between generations in regards to succession of their family farm, for the target group of graduates Korea National Agricultural College of the year 2008 and their parents. This study aims at finding a way of controlling and solving the conflicts, and of developing a course of education and training, so that through this process they can come to a rational conclusion to the conflicts that arise regarding succession of the farm, in a climate of harmony and peace. It is found that communication between parents and graduates has normally gone on well, but specific problems related to management of the farm are often present. Furthermore, there is often lack of trust and promise between the parties which often causes difficulties in preparation for the succession of the farm. On the basis of these observation, we have designed and implemented an education workshop and training, as a program in which parents and their successors participated. As a result, we found it to be very effective, but it was also found to be in need of some changes. The workshop is to be implemented in two separate stages. The first stage should focus on communication and trust between family members. Firstly, they are given the opportunity to share the list of concerns withone another, as an ice breaking activity. Secondly, they can present their own hopes or wishes. And lastly, they can communicate with one another in an effort to find resolutions that will be keep both parties satisfied. The second stage should be aimed at establishing agreements concerning succession of the farm in a harmonious and peaceful manor; the second stage is also an opportunity to discuss 'Farm management and succession'. The Korea National Agricultural College (KNAC) is in the pursuit of fostering agricultural CEO's for the future of Korea. KNAC is currently implementing a very unique system of interviews in which parents participate together with students, in order to help them make a plan for rational management of their farm and smooth succession of the farm. Although KNAC now has students present a blueprint of their own unique business plans as a graduation thesis, it is necessary for KNAC to complement this system with education and training regarding the succession of family farms. Furthermore, KNAC should also develop an education and training program that is separate for this purpose, and make it a regular course of study of KNAC in the future.

노을공원 쓰레기매립지 식생복원을 위한 아까시나무 천이방향 연구 (A Study on Successional Direction of Robinia pseudoacacia for the Vegetation Restoration in Waste Landfill of Noeul Park)

  • The waste landfill that has been used as a park through a stabilization project to provide green space to local residents. Vegetation restoration is necessary for the landfill park project, but it is difficult to restore vegetation due to various disturbances in the landfill. This study analyzed the successional dynamics and ecological characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia communities from the slopes of Noeul Park by applying the 7-stage successional hypothesis. As a result of the study, there was almost no intermediate successional stage. There are only the early successional stage which Robinia pseudoacacia has an absolute dominance of 100% in the crown and middle layers, and the degeneration successional stage which formed by the introduction of Morus alba. This result showed that the succession of Robinia pseudoacacia communities were not able to proceed to the climax forest due to various disturbances in the waste landfill. Therefore, it was analyzed that it is necessary to induce the succession through intermediate steps such as Morus alba, since it is difficult to transition from Robinia pseudoacacia community to the native Quercus spp. community.

화옹지구 간척생태공원 토지이용계획 (Hwaong Eco-park Land Use Plan in Consideration of Reclamation)

  • As sustainable development and environment-friendly efforts in large-scale development projects emerge as major interests at home and abroad, man-made wetlands and eco-park facilities have been newly planned or created when developing reclamation districts recently. In this study, based on findings from a comprehensive review of relevant studies and planning cases, the basic direction and objectives of the plan were developed. A comprehensive analysis on the status of ecological environment and demographic and social environment showed that the planned site is in a process of migrating from early stages of reclamation to middle stages. It was planned for the eco-park to function as a major base along an ecological network consisting a freshwater lake and rivers and streams flowing into the lake in Hwaong District. Through a master plan and sectoral plans were planned according to desalination levels after reclamation. Then, habitats for livings organisms were also planned. The eco-park, the planned site, is also in a process of migrating from the early stages to middles stages. By creating an eco-park that considers post-reclamation ecological environment changes, natural succession processes will be preserved, which is expected to help local ecosystems to restore their functions on their own over a relatively long period of time and enable to observe the restoration process.

남극 해양에서 생물막 생성 초기 단계의 세균 군집 구조 변화 (Succession of bacterial community structure during the early stage of biofilm development in the Antarctic marine environment)

  • 부유 세균의 군집과 구별되는 생물막내 세균 군집은 다양한 수생태계에서 중요한 생태학적 역할을 수행한다. 자연계에서 생물막이 생태학적으로 중요함에도 불구하고, 남극 해양 환경에서 생물막 형성 과정 동안의 세균 군집 구조와 그들의 변화에 대한 연구는 수행되지 않았다. 본 연구에서, 남극 해양 환경에서 생물막 형성 초기 단계에서의 세균 군집 구조 변화를 16S rRNA 유전자의 pyrosequencing을 통해 수행하였다. 생물막내 전반적인 세균 군집은 주변의 해수의 군집과 매우 달랐다. 전체 세균 군집의 78.8%에서 88.3%를 차지한 Gammaproteobacteria와 Bacteroidetes의 상대적 풍부도는 생물막의 형성에 따라 급격하게 변하였다. Gammaproteobacteria는 생물막 형성 진행에 따라 증가하다가 (4일째에 75.7%), 7일째에 46.1%로 감소하였다. 반면, Bacteroidetes는 초기에서 중기로 갈수록 감소하다가 다시 증가하는 양상을 보이며, Gammaproteobacteria와 반대의 변화 양상을 나타내었다. 생물막 형성의 초기 과정에 우점 하는 OTU (>1%)들의 변화 양상은 시기에 따라 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다. Gammaproteobacteria에 속하는 종의 경우, 4일째까지 증가한 반면, 첫째날 가장 우점 하였던 문인 Bacteroidetes에 속하는 종은 4일째까지 감소한 후, 다시 증가하는 양상을 보였다. 흥미롭게, Pseudoalteromonas prydzensis가 67.4%를 차지하며 우점 하였는데, 이는 생물막 형성에 이 종이 중요한 역할을 수행함을 시사하는 것으로 보인다.
