  • This paper addresses a modified spectral subtraction schemes which is suitable to speech recognition under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) noisy environment such as the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system in car. The conventional spectral subtraction schemes rely on the SNR such that attenuation is imposed on that part of the spectrum that appears to have low SNR, and accentuation is made on that part of high SNR. However, such postulation is adequate for high SNR environment, it is grossly inadequate for low SNR scenarios such as that of car environment. Proposed methods focused specifically to low SNR noisy environment by using weighting function for enhancing speech dominant region in speech spectrum. Experimental results by using voice commands for car show the superior performance of the proposed method over conventional methods.

  • The extraction of traffic information based on image processing is under broad research recently because the method based on image processing takes less cost and effort than the traditional method based on physical equipment. The main purpose of the algorithm based on image processing is to extract vehicles from an image correctly. Before the extraction, the algorithm needs the pre-processing such as background subtraction and binary image thresholding. During the pre-processing much noise is brought about because roadside tree and passengers in the sidewalk as well as vehicles are extracted as traffic flow. The noise undermines the overall accuracy of the algorithm. In this research, most of the noise could be removed by extracting the exact road area which does not include sidewalk or roadside tree. To extract the exact road area, traffic lanes in the image were used. Algorithm speed also increased. In addition, with the ratio between the sequential images, the problem caused by vehicles' shadow was minimized.

  • Background subtraction is one of the key techniques for automatic video content analysis, especially in the tasks of visual detection and tracking of moving object. In this paper, we present a new sample-based technique for background extraction that provides background image as well as background model. To handle both high-frequency and low-frequency events at the same time, multiple interval background models are adopted. The main innovation concerns the use of a confidence factor to select the best model from the multiple interval background models. To our knowledge, it is the first time that a confidence factor is used for merging several background models in the field of background extraction. Experimental results revealed that our approach based on multiple interval sampling works well in complicated situations containing various speed moving objects with environmental changes.

  • This paper proposes a new approach for speech enhancement in highly nonstationary noisy environments. The spectral subtraction (SS) is a well known technique for speech enhancement in stationary noisy environments. However, in real world, noise is mostly nonstationary. The proposed method uses an auto control parameter for an adaptive threshold to work well in highly nonstationary noisy environments. Especially, the auto control parameter is affected by a linear function associated with an a posteriori signal to noise ratio (SNR) according to the increase or the decrease of the noise level. The proposed algorithm is combined with spectral subtraction (SS) using a hangover scheme (HO) for speech enhancement. The performances of the proposed method are evaluated ITU-T P.835 signal distortion (SIG) and the segment signal to-noise ratio (SNR) in various and highly nonstationary noisy environments and is superior to that of conventional spectral subtraction (SS) using a hangover (HO) and SS using a minimum statistics (MS) methods.

  • Parallel optical arithmetic techniques have been developed using the correlation property of optical phase conjugate wave generated by degenerated four wave-mixing. In this paper, conventional rectangular-type coded pattern used for optical logic system is replaced by circular one for effective beam coupling in a photorefractive $BaTiO_3$ material. By adequately adjusting the distance between circular-type pixels of the input pattern and grouping the correlated output, optical binary half addition/subtraction, binary multiplication and, matrix-matrix computation are demonstrated.

  • To establish the Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectrophotometry(FTIR) Direct-On-Filter(DOF) technique as a useful analytical method for quartz in respirable dust samples, an influence of the kaolinite should be corrected. Respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing the standard material of quartz and kaolinite were collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25 mm, $0.8\;{\mu}m$ pore size DM filter as a collection medium. This study was designed to compare three methods of correction for kaolinite when quantifying the content of quartz, including the least square, the optimum choice and the spectral subtraction methods. The content of quartz in the respirable dust samples was overestimated by 6.2% when mixed with kaolinite(35.5% by weight). The content of quartz containing kaolinite(72.8% by weight) were overestimated by 32%. The spectral subtraction method underestimated the quartz content by 1.5%, while the other two correction methods, the optimum choice and the least square method, overestimated the quartz content by 1.9% to 6.4% and 0.04 to 1.1%, respectively. The results of this study are suggested that, when correcting for effects of kaolinite on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by FTIR direct-on-filter method, the least square method produce the most unbiased results be compared with those of other correction methods.

  • Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH), which generally presents as orthostatic headache, is increasingly being identified due to improved imaging technologies and heightened awareness. Many prior studies have reported the characteristic brain MRI findings of SIH. However, recently, focus has shifted to spinal MRI, as SIH is believed to be caused by leakage of cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal dural sac. Advanced techniques such as ultrafast CT myelography and digital subtraction myelography have emerged as useful technique to identify the site of cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In this review, we discuss the diagnosis, spinal MRI findings, imaging techniques, and treatment of SIH.

  • Full-duplex communication can enhance wireless capacity by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception of the signals on the same frequency spectrum. Such a benefit, however, is only achieved when strong self-interference is well canceled below a sufficient level. To achieve this goal, there have been several approaches for cancellation, each of which is combined with digital-domain cancellation for a higher gain. In this paper, we implement two self-interference cancellation techniques and integrate them with a software defined radio-based wireless communication testbed. Two cancellation techniques (antenna cancellation and noise subtraction) are implemented and the cancellation gain is measured via real experiments. The results show that the gain of the antenna placement technique highly depends on the placement of a receiving antenna and the highest gain is achieved at the expected point, and we show that combining the noise subtraction circuit with the antenna placement further improves the cancellation gain.

  • Objective: To compare the effects of bone suppression imaging using deep learning (BSp-DL) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and bone subtraction imaging using a dual energy technique (BSt-DE) on radiologists' performance for pulmonary nodule detection on chest radiographs (CXRs). Materials and Methods: A total of 111 adults, including 49 patients with 83 pulmonary nodules, who underwent both CXR using the dual energy technique and chest CT, were enrolled. Using CT as a reference, two independent radiologists evaluated CXR images for the presence or absence of pulmonary nodules in three reading sessions (standard CXR, BSt-DE CXR, and BSp-DL CXR). Person-wise and nodule-wise performances were assessed using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) and alternative free-response ROC (AFROC) curve analyses, respectively. Subgroup analyses based on nodule size, location, and the presence of overlapping bones were performed. Results: BSt-DE with an area under the AFROC curve (AUAFROC) of 0.996 and 0.976 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, and BSp-DL with AUAFROC of 0.981 and 0.958, respectively, showed better nodule-wise performance than standard CXR (AUAFROC of 0.907 and 0.808, respectively; p ≤ 0.005). In the person-wise analysis, BSp-DL with an area under the ROC curve (AUROC) of 0.984 and 0.931 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, showed better performance than standard CXR (AUROC of 0.915 and 0.798, respectively; p ≤ 0.011) and comparable performance to BSt-DE (AUROC of 0.988 and 0.974; p ≥ 0.064). BSt-DE and BSp-DL were superior to standard CXR for detecting nodules overlapping with bones (p < 0.017) or in the upper/middle lung zone (p < 0.017). BSt-DE was superior (p < 0.017) to BSp-DL in detecting peripheral and sub-centimeter nodules. Conclusion: BSp-DL (GAN-based bone suppression) showed comparable performance to BSt-DE and can improve radiologists' performance in detecting pulmonary nodules on CXRs. Nevertheless, for better delineation of small and peripheral nodules, further technical improvements are required.
