Adhesive contact characteristics of torus-shaped bumps were analyzed using the finite element technique considering the adhesive force. Analyses focused on the effect of rim and bump radii on the adhesive contact behavior such as the jump-to-contact behavior, adhesion hysteresis, pull-off forces, contact region and pressure, and surface and subsurface stresses. Analysis results in the absence of adhesive force were also included to examine the effect of adhesive force. The applicability of torus-shaped bumps to the MEMS structure for reduction of friction is discussed.

On the basis of optical microscope and electro microscope observation for the fatigue fracture process of medium corbon martensitic structure produced by rapid heat treatment, mainly the abstracts of the studied results for the morphology of fatigue crack initiation process of high hardened steel are summarized as follows. Fatigue crack initiated from inclusion on the surface or subsurface. Above all the crack which initiated from inclusion exposed on the surface in as follows. (1) fatigue crack initiated from the boundary of the matrix and inclusion. (2) fatigue crack initiated at surrounding of small pit by drop out of inclusion.

Adhesive contact characteristics of torus-shaped bumps, which are commonly used to reduce friction and stiction in hard disks, are analyzed to examine the applicability to the MEMS structure. The analysis is conducted with the finite element technique considering the adhesive force. Torus-shaped bumps of various rim and bump radii are analyzed. The jump-to-contact behavior, adhesion hysterisis, pull-off forces, contact region and pressure, and surface and subsurface stresses are presented and discussed. Analysis results in the absence of adhesive force are also presented to identify the effect of adhesive force.

This paper provides readers with an attempt In applying expert systems to structural engineering. As a demonstrative domain to provide the pontentiality of expert system foundation design is presented. Foundation design can have less formalized phage in the overall design process, particularly during preliminary design. It depends on several factors: the function of the structure and the loads it must carry the subsurface conditions, and the cost of foundation, The expert system in the paper is to be used for determining the type of foundation.

We investigated subsurface structures of the Bransfield Basin, the Antarctic with AUH (Autonomous Underwater Hydrophne) which was designed to record abyssal T-waves generated from submarine earthquakes. The data obtained from a multi-channel seismic survey and an AUH were used for this study. A seismic reflection method was applied to the multi-channel seismic survey data in order to identify bathymetry and sedimentary structures, and the signals recorded in the AUH were used to obtain deep structures as we applied a seismic refraction method. Even though we couldn’t investigate deeper and detailed structure in study area because of lack of Airgun’s capacity, the AUH showed possibilities for being used for a marine seismic survey. From this experiment, we decided the upper and lower sediment layer velocities, detected irregular basement topography probably caused by submarine volcanic/magmatic activities, and retrieved the velocity of the basement and the depth of the sediment layer/basement boundary.
The electronic and the magnetic properties of (001) surface of $KCaN_2$ half-metallic compound with full-Heusler structure are studied with the use of a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Two possible terminations of the surface are considered and only the one with N atoms in the topmost layer is found to retain the half-metallic properties of the bulk. The magnetic properties of N-terminated surface are enhanced compared with the properties of the bulk. The calculated magnetic moments on the N atoms in the $KCaN_2$ are 1.26 ${\mu}_B$ in the bulk and 1.90 ${\mu}_B$ at the surface. The subsurface metal atoms are also slightly polarized. In the surface terminated with metal atoms, not only the half-metallicity is destroyed, but also the magnetic properties of the system are weakened.

Risk and exposure assessment for subsurface environment is very important for both aspects of health and environmental protection as well as making decision of remedial goal for engineering activities. Exposure due to hazardous chemicals in the subsurface environment is essential to assess risk lev121 to individual person, especially from soil and groundwater environmental media. In this paper, the status of soil and groundwater contamination is presented to discuss on the problem for environmental risk assessment. The methodologies of fate and exposure models are also discussed by conducting the case studies of exposure assessment for heavy metals, organic compounds, and dioxin compounds. In addition, the structure of exposure models and available data for model calculation are examined to make clear more realistic exposure scenarios and the application to the practical environmental issues. Three kinds of advanced remediation techniques for soil and groundwater contamination are described in this paper, The most practical method for VOCs is the bio-remediation technique in which biological process due to consortium of microorganisms can be applied. For more effective remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals we have adopted the soil flushing technique and clean-up system using electro-kinetic method. We have also developed the advanced techniques of geo-melting method for soil contaminated by DXNs and PCB compounds. These techniques are planed to introduce and to apply for a lot of contaminated sites in Japan.
Gravity study was carried out to investigate the structure and total mass of the Bupyeong silver deposits closely related to formation of the Bupyeong caldera. Survey region covers $3.3{\times}6.6km^2$ over silver deposits and is comprised of 334 gravity measurement stations. An apparent regional gravity trend parallel to the west coast line is mainly attributed to isostasy. A least square isostasy model was used for the regional correction. A Fortan subroutine was coded to calculate 3-dimensional subsurface model. The calculated gravity values from the 3-dimensional model of the caldera with silver deposits agree with observed anomalies relatively well. Gravity anomaly due to Bupyeong silver deposits reaches to +3.5 mgal from the background value and anomaly due to the caldera reaches to -4 mgal. But the maximum negative anomaly of the caldera would be much greater at its center. The total mass of silver deposits calculated from the subsurface model is $4.19{\times}10^9$ tons. Although the economic part of silver deposits depends on the grade of orebody, we expect that there are still large amount of silver reserves in Bupyeong area.

The sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus, is becoming an important aquaculture species in China, Japan and Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biological performance of a tubular type of subsurface cage for sea cucumber grow-out by in-situ tests. The cage structure was constructed of PP (polypropylene) frames and PP tubes (${\phi}130mm{\times}24pieces$). A set of tests were conducted at a depth of 15 m near Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for 295 days (23 July, 2012 to 13 May, 2013). A total of 155 sea cucumbers were used and fed a mixed diet containing mud, mineral, wheat, fish meal, etc (3% of their body weight). At the end of the experiments, sea cucumber showed a higher survival rate in feed shelter (77.14%) rather than no feed shelter (64.71%). The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumbers in feed condition (0.04% $day^{-1}$) was higher than that of no feed culture animals (-0.49% $day^{-1}$) during total experimental periods. The result was able to find a no significance difference in survival rate but a significance difference in SGR under feed and no feed treatments.
The geostatistical approach was applied to integrate MT (Magneto-telluric) resistivity data and borehole information for the spatial RMR (Rock Mass Rating) evaluation. Generally, resistivity of the subsurface is believed to be positively related to the RMR, thus the resistivity and borehole RMR information was combined in a geostatistical approach. To relate the two different sets of data, we take the MT resistivity data as secondary information and estimate the RMR mean values at unsampled points by identification of the resistivity to the borehole data. Two types of approach are performed for the estimation of RMR mean values. Then the residuals of the RMR values around the borehole sites are geostatistically modeled to infer the spatial structure of difference between real RMR values and estimated mean values. Finally, this geostatistical estimation is added to the previous means. The result applied to a real situation shows prominent improvements to reflect the subsurface structure and spatial resolution of RMR information.
