Optical transmission technology of Ultra high-speed and Ultra long distance (초고속 초장거리 광전송 기술)

  • High speed optical fiber transmission technology has been remarkably improved during the past 20 years. This paper presents recent research status and future technological issues for the future information society, that is, the Tb/s transmission by frequency division multiplexing and the ultra long-distance by optical soliton transmission. Erbium-doped fiber amplifier and recent optical technology have brought optical transmission system of up to 10 Gb/s to the point of commercialization. Taking into account the future super information highway, that is, B-ISDN network, ultra wide-band picture-based information can be provided for many subscribers via existing optical fiber cables. However, to achieve the high speed transmission, the technologies must be developed not only for transmission lines but also for transmission nodes. Since the conventional signal transmission/processing technique using electronics has the limit in its speed, novel photonic technology is being developed for this purpose. On the other hand, optical solitons propagate stably through optical fibers, without pulse broadening effect of the fiber dispersion. Since the pulse broadening effect becomes serious as the transmission speed increases, optical solitons is the important technologies to realize the high speed, long distance transmission.

The Analyses of Successful Strategy for Internet Portals: From the Analyses of M&A Cases (인터넷 포탈의 성공적인 분석: 인수합병 사례를 중심으로)

  • Currently, most of big IT companies attempt to penetrate into Internet portal industry aggressively in order to expand their channels(sale, distribution, marketing, R&D, and so on) and to acquire competitive advantages. Existing Internet portals also have become larger and more complex with continuous developments. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire competitive contents to survive the extreme competition and to satisfy diverse needs of customers. In this paper, we have done qualitative analyses on the cases of domestic and foreign major Internet portals which have acquired contents through of M&A and strategic alliances. In our analyses, we identify five factors crucial to the successes and failures of Internet portals. From the analyses, we find that the acquisition of UCC based contents and subscribers over the critical mass point are the two most important factors that should be simultaneously satisfied for the successful M&As. Additional analyses suggest how to acquire synergy effects from successful M&As.

Fast Group Scanning Scheme in IEEE 802.16e Networks (IEEE 802.16e에서 그룹 기반의 빠른 스캐닝 기법)

  • The mobile station which is about to do handover in IEEE 802.16e networks scans its neighboring base station channels to decide its next target base station. However, due to the lack of location information of its subscribers, the serving base station cannot provide any reliable candidate channel which is actually attachable by the scanning mobile stations, which makes the mobile station suffer from the long scanning time. Sometimes, long scanning time may cause the degradation of quality of service due to repeatable scan-duration or failure to start the handover procedure in time. To overcome these problems, in this paper, we propose a new protocol so called fast group scanning scheme, in which multiple mobile stations form a group to scan their neighboring base station channels simultaneously. Main contribution of this proposal is to find and decide a reliable target base station within a short scanning time. The fast group scanning scheme can be deployed to the cell network of the serving base station with a dynamic neighboring base station list management.

Time Slot Assignment Algorithm with Graph Coloring (그래프 채색에 의한 타임 슬롯 할당 알고리즘)

  • A simple Time Division Multiplex(TDM) switching system which has been widely in satellite networks provides any size of bandwidth for a number of low bandwidth subscribers by allocating proper number of time slots in a frame. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on graph coloring model for efficient time slot assignment algorithm in contrast to network flow model in previous works. When the frame length of an initial matrix of time slot requests is 2's power, this matrix is divided into two matrices of time slot requests using binary divide and conquer method based on the graph coloring model. This process is continued until resulting matrices of time slot requests are of length one. While the most efficient algorithm proposed in the literature has time complexity of $O(N^{4.5})$, the time complexity of the proposed algorithm is $O(NLlog_2L)$, where N is the number of input/output links and L is the number of time slot alloted to each link in the frame.

  • ATM PON system is regarded as a solution of the next generation access network because it can cover various types of subscribers in a single platform. In this paper, we describe the merit of the ATM PON and the key protocols for its operation. Above all, the ranging is the most important protocol providing a mean of the time-division multiple access in the system. A problem in the protocol is that the window size, the time interval that ranging cell arrives, is too long. During the interval, user traffics cannot be send to the upstream, which makes the quality of service degraded. In this paper, we suggest a method to minimize the window size when the length of the optic fiber is known with some deviation. The window size can be reduced as 7 % of the conventional method when the deviation of the length is 1 Km.

  • The increasing number of wireless subscribers who can use internet service any time and any place have caused wireless communications networks to flourish. However, since total communication channel bandwidth for wireless communications is limited, it is very important to find the solution for maximizing the channel utilization. Thus, in this work we propose a QoS packet scheduler for IEEE 802.11e EDCA scheme which is able to maximize the channel throughput with changing the CW value considering wireless channel condition. This proposed scheme is evaluated with NS-2 network simulator under various environments and it is easily shown from the numerical results that the proposed scheme provides better performance than that of the original IEEE 802.11e scheme.

  • This paper proposes a prepaid system promotion policy for the 3G(WCDMA) MVNO with regard to the newly included paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 of Article 32 (User Protection) and Article 38 (Provision of Wholesale Telecommunications Services) of the Telecommunication Business Act, which was revised on March 22, 2010. As of June 2011, there are only a few prepaid system subscribers to the mobile communications service due to various limitations, including prepay, interconnection, carrier selection, the MVNO policy, and number portability. However, overseas communications service regulatory agencies and service providers are increasingly presenting policies and strategies for mobile prepaid plans, in order to accommodate the various customer demands that are increasing the use of smart phones and data. This paper advances various proposals concerning promotion of the prepaid system by the 3G MVNO under the current Telecommunication Business Act, including separation of the prepaid data system and the mobile network; introduction of a monthly fixed-rate hybrid prepaid system, a top-up system and USIM system; introduction of mobile network carrier selection; differentiated retail discounts between prepaid and post-paid prices; revision of the retail discount policy for wholesale provision; increase in the number of mandatory service providers; and in-depth consideration of the introduction of a number portability policy for the prepaid and post-paid systems.

Efficient Transmission of Scalable Video Streams Using Dual-Channel Structure (듀얼 채널 구조를 이용한 Scalable 비디오(SVC)의 전송 성능 향상)

  • During the last decade, the multitude of advances attained in terminal computers, along with the introduction of mobile hand-held devices, and the deployment of high speed networks have led to a recent surge of interest in Quality of Service (QoS) for video applications. The main difficulty is that mobile devices experience disparate channel conditions, which results in different rates and patterns of packet loss. One way of making more efficient use of network resources in video services over wireless channels with heterogeneous characteristics to heterogeneous types of mobile device is to use a scalable video coding (SVC). An SVC divides a video stream into a base layer and a single or multiple enhancement layers. We have to ensure that the base layer of the video stream is successfully received and decoded by the subscribers, because it provides the basis for the subsequent decoding of the enhancement layer(s). At the same time, a system should be designed so that the enhancement layer(s) can be successfully decoded by as many users as possible, so that the average QoS is as high as possible. To accommodate these characteristics, we propose an efficient transmission scheme which incorporates SVC-aware dual-channel repetition to improve the perceived quality of services. We repeat the base-layer data over two channels, with different characteristics, to exploit transmission diversity. On the other hand, those channels are utilized to increase the data rate of enhancement layer data. This arrangement reduces service disruption under poor channel conditions by protecting the data that is more important to video decoding. Simulations show that our scheme safeguards the important packets and improves perceived video quality at a mobile device.

The study on the diagnosis and measurement of post-information society by ANP (ANP를 활용한 후기정보사회의 수준진단과 측정에 관한 연구)

  • Social changes due to ICT like Big Data, IoT, Cloud and Mobile is progressing rapidly. Now, we get out of the old-fashioned frame was measured at the level of the information society through the introduction of PC, Internet speed and Internet subscribers etc and there is a need for a new type of diagnostic information society framework. This study is the study for the framework established to diagnose and measure post-information society. The framework and indicators were chosen in accordance with the technological society coevolution theory and information society-related indicators presented from authoritative international organizations. Empirical results utilizing the indicators and framework developed in this study were as follows: First, the three sectors, six clusters (items), 25 nodes (indicators) that make up the information society showed that all strongly connected. Second, it was diagnosed as information society development (50.34%), technology-based expansion (25.03%) and ICT effect (24.63%) through a network analysis (ANP) for the measurement of importance of the information society. Third, the result of calculating the relative importance of the cluster and nodes showed us (1)social development potential (26.04%), (2)competitiveness (15.9%), (3)ICT literacy (15.5%) (4) (social)capital (24.3 %), (5)ICT acceptance(9.54%), (6)quality of life(8.7%). Consequently, We should take into account the effect of the economy and quality of life beyond ICT infrastructure-centric when we measure the post-information society. By applying the weighting we should performs a comparison between countries and we should diagnose the level of Korea and provide policy implications for the preparation of post-information society.

Effective Index and Backup Techniques for HLR System in Mobile Networks (이동통신 HLR 시스템에서의 효과적인 색인 및 백업 기법)

  • A Home Location Register(HLR) database system manages each subscriber's location information, which continuously changes in a cellular network. For this purpose, the HLR database system provides table management, index management, and backup management facilities. In this thesis, we propose using a two-level index method for the mobile directory number(MDN) as a suitable method and a chained bucket hashing method for the electronic serial number(ESN). Both the MDN and the ESN are used as keys in the HLR database system. We also propose an efficient backup method that takes into account the characteristics of HLR database transactions. The retrieval speed and the memory usage of the two-level index method are better than those of the R-tree index method. The insertion and deletion overhead of the chained bucket hashing method is less than that of the modified linear hashing method. In the proposed backup method, we use two kinds of dirty flags in order to solve the performance degradation problem caused by frequent registration-location operations. For a million subscribers, proposed techniques support reduction of memory size(more than 62%), directory operations (2500,000 times), and backup operations(more than 80%) compared with current techniques.
