In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R245fa and R123 are measured on a horizontal plain tube. All data are taken at the vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling temperature $3-8^{\circ}C$. Test results show the HTCs of newly developed alternative low vapor pressure refrigerant, R245fa, on a plain tube are 9.5% higher than those of R123 while they are 3.3% and 5.6% lower than those of R134a and R22 respectively. Nusselt's prediction equation for a plain tube underpredicts the data by 13.7% for all refrigerants while a modified equation yielded 5.9% deviation against all data. From the view point of environmental safety and condensation heat transfer, R245fa is a long term good candidate to replace R123 used in centrifugal chillers.

R410A is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R410A flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass flux varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for refrigerant side. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 16% is needed for R410A than that of R22 for subcooling temperature of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted in air-side pressure drop decrease of 15% for R410A as compared to R22. As a consequence, in order to provide the same design condition of a condenser, the fan requires lower electric-power consumption with R410A than that with R22.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has a scaled-down moderator test program to simulate the CANDU6 moderator circulation phenomena during steady state operation and accident conditions. In the present work a preliminary experiment using a 1/8 scaled-down moderator tank has been performed to identify the potential problems of the flow visualization and measurement in the scaled-down moderator test facility. With a transparent moderator tank model, a velocity field is measured with a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique under an isothermal state. The flow patterns from the inlet nozzles to the top region of the tank are investigated using PIV for a 1/8 scale moderator tank.

To investigate parametric effect on CHF and to get CHF data, experimental study has been performed with vertical round tubes under the condition of low pressure and low flow (LPLF). Test sections are made of Inconel-625 tube and have the geometry of 8 and 10 mm in diameter, and 0.5 and 1.0 m in heated length. All experiments have been conducted at the pressure of under 9 bar, the mass flux of under 250 kg/$m^2$ and the inlet subcooling of 350 and 450 kJ/kg, for stable upward flow with water as a coolant. Flow regime analysis has been performed for obtained CHF data with Mishima's flow regime map, which reveals that most of the CHF occur in the annular-mist flow regime. General parametric trends of the collected CHF data are consistent with those of previous studies. However, for the pressure effect on CHF, two different are observed; For relatively high mass flux, CHF increases with pressure and far lower mass flux, CHF decrease with pressure. Using modern data regression tool, ACE algorithm, two new CHF correlations for LPLF condition are developed based on local condition and inlet condition, respectively. The developed CHF correlations show better prediction accuracy compared with existing CHF prediction methods.
This study investigated heat transfer phenomena during the freezing of an initially superheated or non-superheated liquid in a cooled cylinder tube. Numerical and experimental method were performed to obtatin the temperature and velocity distribution, the shape of interface. Natural convection effects in the superheated liquid were confined and moderated a short freezing time. After natural convection ceases, heat conduction dominated in the whole paraffin, so Crystal and much-zone were found out in PCM. Initial superheating of liquid tended to morderatly diminish the frozen layer thickness at short freezing times but little effect on the these quantities at longer times. On the amount of frozen mass, Iintial liquid superheating is less affected than tube wall subcooling.
This paper describes an analysis on performance of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system with internal heat exchanger to optimize the design for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, internal heat exchanger and compression efficiency, evaporating and condensing temperature in the R744 low- and R404A high-temperature cycle and temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger. The main results are summarized as follows : COP of cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing of compression efficiency, but decreases with the increasing temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger. Also, the COP increases with the increasing of internal heat exchanger efficiency in high-temperature cycle, but decreases with that in low-temperature cycle. Therefore, internal heat exchanger efficiency, compressor efficiency and temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger on R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system have an effect on the COP of this system.

Experiments on the performance of refrigeration system using alternatives to R12 are carried out. The condenser and the evaporator are concentric-tube heat exchangers of counter-flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. In this study, R134a, R152a, R22/142b(50 : 50 by mass) are adopted as alternatives to R12. Tests are performed by varying the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids of evaporator and condenser under the condition of constant compressor speed, degree of superheating and degree of subcooling. Results show that R134a has refrigeration capacity close to that of R12 and requires the greatest compressor power compared with that of others. And the system using R152a shows the best performance from the viewpoint of refrigeration capacity, compressor power and coefficient of performance. R22/142b is superior to R12 in the above points.

In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R134a and R1234yf are measured on a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes at the saturated vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$ with the wall subcooling of $3{\sim}8^{\circ}C$. R1234yf is a new alternative refrigerant of low greenhouse warming potential for replacing R134a which is one of the greenhouse gases controlled by Kyoto protocol and is used extensively in mobile air-conditioners. Test results show that the external condensation HTCs of R1234yf are very similar to those of R134a for all three surfaces tested. For the application of condensation heat transfer correlations to the design of condensers charged with R1234yf, thorough property measurements are needed for R1234yf in the near future.
A Superconducting Fault Current Limiter is an electric power device which limits the fault current immediately in a power grid. The SFCL must be cooled to below the critical temperature of high temperature superconductor modules. In general, they are submerged in sub-cooled liquid nitrogen for their stable thermal characteristics. To cool and maintain the target temperature and pressure of the sub-cooled liquid nitrogen, the cryogenic cooling system should be designed well with a cryocooler and coolant circulation devices. The pressure of the cryostat for the SFCL should be pressurized to suppress the generation of nitrogen bubbles in quench mode of the SFCL. In this study, we tested the performance of the cooling system for the prototype 154 kV SFCL, which consist of a Stirling cryocooler, a subcooling cryostat, a pressure builder and a main cryostat for the SFCL module, to verify the design of the cooling system and the electric performance of the SFCL. The normal operation condition of the main cryostat is 71 K and 500 kPa. This paper presents tests results of the overall cooling system.
A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.
