  • The inluence of styrofoam-panel thickness of floating frame on the seedling growth of flue-cured tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) in the newly developed direct-seed float system was investigated . Floating frame used instead of styrofoam-tray consisted of styrofoam-panel (106×108cm) for floating, eight holes(1.Sx2S.0 cm) to uniform the water, and nutrition supply far seedling and water and nutrition absorption cloth placed on the styrofoam-panel. Each floating-frame may lay eight plastic-trays on it. Eight grades of styrofoam-panel thickness from 26 mm to 46mm and two kinds of media were used in the greenhouse system. Dry cells were found from the styrofoam-panel thickness of 43mm in carbonized chaff, compost and original soil rate of L3-3(v/v) media, and of 37mm in peat and perlite rate of 8-2(v/v) media. The thinner styrofoam-panel produced more tender and succulent seedling with the more trunk and the less root weight. When considering the appearance of dry cell, seedling growth, producing healthy tobacco seedlings, and utilization of styrofoam-panel for two kinds of medias the ideal styrofoam-panel thickness were suggested to be around 34mm for flue-cured tobacco reeling production in the newly developed direct-seeding float system. Key words : tobacco seedlings, float system, medium, styrofoam pannel, dry cell.

  • This paper presents the engineering property of light weight soil made of soil mixed with recycled Styrofoam and stabilizer. Recycled Styrofoam is widely used for lightweight fill material because it has important geotechnical characteristics which are light, adiabatic, and effective for vibration interception. It is very easy to get the disposal styrofoam. For this study, dynamic compaction test, static compaction test and pH and leaching tests were performed. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the static compaction method is recommened to prevent from crushing materials and pH values of embankment materials are satisfied with these of domestic and RCRA configuration.

  • A dedicated CAM(Computer-Aided Manufacturing) system has been developed, which generated tool-path to machine Styrofoam stamping die-patterns in Chrysler Corporation. A previous process to build die-patterns was to "stick build" the pattern, in which stock is cut & glued together, and then the NC machining of part-surface shape completes building a Styrofoam die-pattern. The current process utilizes the developed CAM system, and almost removes the manual work, consequently reduces the overall lead time. The paper presents the overall system structures, tool-path generation, and some features of Styrofoam pattern machining.

  • This research suggest one-body type scrapped styrofoam crusher with sprayed air (or water), which at present separately composed of dust eliminator, air supplier and crusher. Air (or water) that supplied from compressor injected to rotating twin roller through axis hole, and sprayed out of fine hole on the surface. The crusher that manufactured with sprayed air (or water) can make high-quality primary styrofoam removed pollution and dust. In case of mixed sprayed air and water, clean degree of crushed styrofoam was higher than single sprayed air. This could be contributed to reduce environmental pollution, cost and space in standpoint of recycling scrapped styrofoam.

  • In Korea, more than 30,000 tons of waste Styrofoam are produced every year. Styrofoam is spent more than 500 years decomposing during the reclamation process, so it needs to be recycled. The recycling rate of waste styrofoam continues to be the third highest in the world, but it is lower than that of Germany and Japan. Therefore, measures are needed to increase the recycling rate of waste Styropol. Another problem is that cement is mainly used in existing lightweight foam concrete. However, large amounts of CO2 from cement-producing processes cause environmental pollution. Currently, Korea is increasing its greenhouse gas reduction targets to cope with energy depletion and climate change, and accelerating efforts to identify and implement reduction measures for each sector. In 2013 alone, about 600 million tons of carbon dioxide was generated in the cement industry. Therefore, this study replaces CO2 generation cement with furnace slag fine powder, uses crude steel cement for initial strength development of bubble concrete, and manufactures hardening materials to study its properties using waste styrofoam. As a result of the experiment, the hardening agent replaced by micro powder of furnace slag was less intense and more prone to absorption than cement using ordinary cement. Further experiments on the segmentation and strength replenishment of furnace slag are believed to contribute to the manufacture of environmentally friendly lightweight foam concrete.

  • The process of styrofoam pattern that has been used for material of press die pattern depends chiefly on handwork. Laser manufacturing system developed to increase precision and efficiency of process that is also able to convert the design easily. Applying the RP(rapid prototyping) concept reversely, the unnecessary part of section is vapored away by heat source of laser beam after converting 3-D CAD model into cross-sectional shape information. Laser beam is line-scanned in plane specimens to measure the depth and width of cut, surface roughness, cross-sectional shape as converting laser power, scanning speed, cutting gas pressure. With these basic data, plane surface, inclined surface, hole, outer contour trimming process is experimented and optimum condition are obtained. In plane and inclined surface experiments, 15W laser power and 50mm/s scanning speed make superior processing property and 30W, 10mm/s make processing efficiency increase in trimming process. With these results, simple patterns were manufactured and the possibility of applying laser manufacturing system to styrofoam pattern was convinced.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose the method reproducing three dimensional figure data to a reconstructed body by the styrofoam board. To make the reconstructed body, the 3D figure data were rotated to make symmetry and the surfaces were edited. The horizontal curves were gathered equally-spaced based on the waist horizontal plane. we proposed the process to cut the styrofoam board according to the horizontal curves, to assemble them to organize the shape of the body figure and to coat the surface with the knitted. The 3-dimensional figure data of straight type, swayback type, lean-back type and bend-forward type were selected and the reconstructed bodies were made as above. And the compatibility was verified by the measurement comparison and deviations between 3-dimensional figure data and reconstructed body.

  • Nitrification efficiency of fixed film biofilters with sand, loess bead, and styrofoam bead in biofilter columns of 1-m height and 30 cm width was studied. Synthetic wastewater was continuously supplied to the culture tank to maintain total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration in the inflow water at around 8 mg/L. The hydraulic loading rate was set at 200 ㎥/$m^2$/day. TAN conversion was stabilized after about 90 day conditioning for all the selected filter media but with net accumulations of nitrite. On the volumetric basis, conversion rates of TAN and nitrite were the highest in styrofoam bead filter. Mean volumetric TAN conversion rates in the final samples were 682, 269, and 79 g TAN/㎥/day in the styrofoam bead, sand and loess bead filters, respectively. Low gravity and cost of styrofoam bead render the handling easier and more cost-effective.

  • This study was carried out, using toxicity test apparatus, to analyze toxic gases of heat insulation material and adhesives of composite panels used for the architectural surface material when a fire occurs. The findings of this study show that CO, $CO_2$, HCOH, $CH_2CHCN$ and $NO_x$ were detected from styrofoam, reinforced styrofoam, polyurethane foam and glass fiber, but in the case of the polyurethane foam, HCl and HCN were detected as well. All the architectural adhesives released CO, $CO_2$ and $NO_x$, but HCHO was only detected from the adhesives for styrofoam, wood, tile, windows and doors; $CH_2CHCN$ was only from those for wood and stone; $C_6H_5OH$ was only from those for wood. The toxicity index was also measured for architectural surface material and adhesives. Polyurethane foam showed the highest index, 11.7, and glass fiber was followed as 6.8. Reinforced styrofoam showed 5.7 and styrofoam revealed the least 4.9. In the case of architectural adhesives, the highest ranking was those for stone 7.4, windows and doors 6.1, wood 5.3, tile 3.8, and styrofoam 3.7 were followed, respectively.

  • Abundance and composition of marine debris on 13 beaches of Tongyeong City, South Korea were surveyed in 2013 Autumn. The average quantity of macro debris (>25 mm) was about 30 particle/$m^2$ and that of micro debris (1 mm-25 mm) was about 26,971 particle/$m^2$. This is a very high level compared with other areas of South Korea and the other countries. Among the 7 material types of debris (styrofoam, hard plastic, fiber, metal, glass, wood and others), styrofoam composed a large portion: 75% of macro debris and 98% of micro debris. And among the 'whole' styrofoam debris items whose original volume is remained more than 50%, styrofoam buoy debris composed 93%. This result suggests that the beaches surveyed are seriously contaminated by marine debris, and most of its sources are aquaculture styrofoam buoys. Management of styrofoam buoy debris used for oyster aquaculture in Tongyeong City is important not only for Tongyeong city, but also for other areas, because Tongyeong city hosts the biggest number of oyster aquaculture areas in South Korea.
