Thinking Science 프로그램의 적용에서 지연검사에 의한 중학생들의 인지발달 가속 효과의 분석 (Analysis of Cognitive Acceleration Effects in Implementing the Thinking Science Program to Secondary School Students by Delayed Test)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 중학교 학생들에게 Thinking Science 프로그램을 통한 실험집단과 통제집단을 3 년에 걸쳐 비교하여 인지가속 효과를 조사하는 것이다. 이 프로그램은 2년간 중학교 1학년 168명의 학생들에 게 투입되었다. 프로그램 투입 이후에 SRT VII으로 사후검사와 지연검사를 실시한 결과 학생들의 형식적 사 고 능력의 향상이 거의 2배나 이루어졌다. 사후검사에서 실험집단의 인지발달 수준이 통제집단과 비교하여 유 의미한 인지향상점수를 얻었다. 투입이 더 이상 이루어지지 않은 다음 해의 지연검사에서는 실험집단과 통제 집단이 동일한 비율로 인지발달이 이루어졌지만 실험집단의 구체적 조작 후기에 있는 많은 학생들이 형식적 조작기로 이동하였다. 성별에 따른 인지수준의 향상은 사후검사에서는 실험집단의 여학생들이, 그리고 지연검 사에서는 남학생들이 형식적 조작기로의 이동 비율이 더욱 크게 나타났다.

중학교 과학 교과서에서 요구하는 수학 관련 과학 개념의 수준 및 학생들의 인지 수준 분석: 2015 개정 교육 과정의 화학과 생물을 중심으로 (Analysis of the Level of Mathematical Concepts in Middle School Science Textbooks and Students' Cognitive Levels: Focused on Chemistry and Biology of the 2015 Revised Curriculum)

  • 본 연구는 학생들이 과학 개념을 이해하는 데 어려움을 겪고 학습을 회피하는 이유를 파악하기 위해 학생들의 인지 수준과 수학과 관련된 과학 개념이 요구하는 인지 수준을 분석했다. 먼저, 2015 개정 교육 과정의 수학 및 과학 교육 과정을 분석하여 중학교 과학 내용 중 수학과 연계된 부분의 학습 요소를 추출했으며, CAT (Curriculum Analysis Taxonomy)을 이용하여 학습 내용에서 요구되는 인지 수준을 분석했다. 화학의 경우, 수학과 관련된 총 20개의 학습 요소 중 12개가 초기 형식적 조작 수준(3A)의 이해가 필요하며, 3개가 후기 형식적 조작 수준(3B)의 이해가 필요했다. 3A와 3B에 해당하는 학습 요소들에는 비례 논리, 수리적 조작, 측정 기술에 관련된 사고 논리 유형이 많이 사용되는 것을 확인했다. 생물의 경우, 수학과 관련된 총 7개의 학습 요소 중 3개가 초기 형식적 조작 수준(3A)의 이해가 필요하며, 2개가 후기 형식적 조작 수준(3B)의 이해가 필요했다. 3A와 3B에 해당하는 생물 요소들은 상관 논리에 해당하는 학습 요소가 많이 포함되어 있어 학생들이 어려움을 겪을 수 있는 인지적 원인이 화학 영역과는 다소 차이가 있었다. 이는 GALT 축소본을 통해 분석된 형식적 사고가 가능한 중학교 학생의 평균 비율이 1학년의 경우 12.1 %, 2학년의 경우 16.6 %, 3학년의 경우 29.3 %임을 고려할 때, 학생들의 인지 수준에 비추어 수학과 연계된 화학 및 생물 학습 내용에서 요구하는 인지 수준이 더 높다고 할 수 있다.

중학생의 도덕적 이탈이 사이버불링 가해행동에 미치는 영향과 자기통제력의 조절효과 (Effect of Moral Disengagement on Cyberbullying Perpetration in Middle School Students and the Moderating Role of Self-Control)

  • This study examined the effects of moral disengagement (cognitive restructuring and blaming the victim) and self-control on cyberbullying perpetration and investigated if self-control moderated the relationship between moral disengagement (cognitive restructuring and blaming the victim) and cyberbullying perpetration. Participants in the study consisted of 551 middle school students (273 boys and 278 girls) from five middle schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Cyberbullying perpetration, moral disengagement and self-control were measured using the Bullying/Victimization Questionnaire, the Mechanisms of Moral Disengagement Scale, and the Self-Control Scale for children and adolescents. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression analysis. The moderating effect of self-control was analyzed using procedures proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986). The results indicated that both levels of cognitive restructuring and blaming the victim increased cyberbullying perpetration whereas the level of self-control decreased cyberbullying perpetration. In addition, self-control moderated the effect of cognitive restructuring on cyberbullying perpetration. The influence of cognitive restructuring on cyberbullying perpetration was greater when the level of self-control was low, compared to when it was high.

인지적 편향과 불안감이 미국 대학생의 위험 신용 행동에 미치는 영향과 상호작용효과 (Direct and Interaction Effects of Cognitive Bias and Anxiety on Credit Misuse among U.S. College Students)

  • This study determines whether certain cognitive biases (i.e., time preference, goal attainment expectation, unrealistic optimism, and overconfidence) and a specific negative mood-state (i.e., anxiety) influence credit misuse among college students. Data were collected from fourth-year college students (N=1,146), all of whom attended the same university in the southwest United States. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses and moderator analyses were employed to test the research hypotheses. Results showed that specific cognitive biases and anxiety were directly associated with credit misuse. We found that the longer goal attainment was delayed, the greater the students' unrealistic optimism concerning future income; in addition, the more overconfident they became with respect to financial knowledge, the more frequently they engaged in credit misuse. The study also showed that the higher a student's level of anxiety, the more often that students engaged in credit misuse. We also found that cognitive bias factors and anxiety interact to influence credit misuse. Anxiety interacted with time preference and unrealistic optimism such that present-oriented time preference was negatively related to credit misuse while optimism toward future income was positively related to credit misuse, but only for students with high anxiety levels. The findings of this study are discussed in the context of understanding and preventing irresponsible financial behavior among young adults.

방관자의 집단 특성에 따른 또래괴롭힘 참여 역할행동 (Participation in Bullying : Bystanders' Characteristics and Role Behaviors)

  • This study analyzed differences of role behaviors of participants in bullying according to bystanders' characteristics. Participants were 112 $5^{th}$, $6^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ grade students. Bystanders' characteristics of empathy, negative attitudes about bullying, psychological burden, distorting of consequences, and attribution of blame were classified by K-Means Cluster Analysis into three groups with similar characteristics : lack of empathy/cognitive distorting, anti-bullying, and perception of cost groups. Major findings were that : the lack of empathy/cognitive distorting group had higher levels of bullying behavior than the anti-bullying group and higher levels of victimization than the perception of cost group. The anti-bullying group showed higher levels of defense behavior than the lack of empathy/cognitive distorting group. Implications for future research were discussed.

수학적 과제가 수학적 의사소통에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Mathematical Tasks on Mathematical Communication)

  • 수학교육에서 수학적 의사소통을 강화하는 것은 교사에게 많은 것을 의존하는 교실 상황을 학생들이 그들 자신의 생각을 책임지는 상황으로 바꾸는데 도움을 준다. 이 연구는 수학적 의사소통에서 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 예상되는 수학적 과제가 수학적 의사소통에 미치는 영향에 대하여 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 인지적 요구수준에 따라 수학적 과제를 암기형, 절차형, 개념원리형, 탐구형으로 나누고, 각 과제 유형에 따라 학생들의 수학적 의사소통 참여, 수학적 정당화 유형, 수학적 합의과정이 어떻게 달라지는지 양적 분석방법과 질적 분석방법을 병행하여 살펴보았다. 수학적 과제는 학생들의 수학적 의사소통과 밀접한 연관성을 갖고 있으며, 어떤 과제로 학습하느냐에 따라 학습 효과는 달라진다. 따라서 해결방법이 다양하고 인지적 요구수준이 높은 수학적 과제를 제공하는 것은 학생들의 수학적 의사소통 능력을 향상시키는데 중요하다.

수학학습 정의적 영역에 대한 인과 모형 분석 (A Causal Model Analysis of Non-Cognitive Characteristics of Mathematics Learning)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라 초 중 고 학생들의 수학학습 실태 조사 연구의 일환으로 시도되었다. 본 연구는 수학학습에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 가치, 흥미, 학습태도, 외적 동기, 내적 동기, 학습의지, 효능감 등 7개의 정의적 요인을 가지고 분석하였다. 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통해 추출한 결과 '효능감'이 초 중 고 학생 모두에게 가장 영향을 많이 미치는 요인으로 나타났다. 또한 인과 모형으로 분석한 결과에 따르면, 학생들이 수학에 대한 '가치'를 인식할 때 '외적/내적동기'가 발생하고, 두 동기는 수학에 대한 '흥미'와 '학습의지'를 높이며, 마지막으로 긍정적인 '학습태도'와 '효능감'을 발달시킨다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 학교급이 높아질수록 외적동기의 영향력이 강해지는 반면에 초등학생인 경우 외적 동기가 흥미로 이어지지 않았으며, 초등학생과 중학생의 경우 '흥미'가 수학 포기여부에 영향을 준 주요 매개 변인으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 제시한 경로 분석 연구 결과는 정의적 영역의 각 요소가 어떤 경로로 수학포기에 이르는가를 분석한 것으로, 향후 학생들의 수학 학습 지도에 중점을 두어야 할 사항과 우선순위를 두고 접근해야하는 요소 등에 대한 시사점으로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Effect of a Standing Body Position during College Students' Exam: Implications on Cognitive Test Performance

  • This study stems from the work of Lehman et al. (Ergonomics, 2001) which concluded that standing yields better work performance, and from the growing health trend of recommending the reduction of the amount of time spent in sitting (Owen et al., Exercise and Sport Science Reviews, 2010). Lajoie et al. (Experimental Brain Research, 1993) provided an initial significant contribution to a theory that standing requires a person to control balance, equating to demand higher productive output from the cognitive system than when a person is sitting. An assumption was formulated that standing position during class is feasible and can be adopted on the belief that it might contribute positive results to students' performance. The purpose of this study is to identify whether a body position during exams tested along with exposure durations has a significant effect on college students' performance. Mathematical analysis and reading comprehension exam was used to measure the cognitive performance of the students. Two factors, position and duration, were tested for significance with two levels each subjected to six replicates. Twenty-four students from the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, University of the Philippines Los Ba$\tilde{n}$os were randomly selected. The experiment showed that the body position during exams is a significant factor for the Math exam, but insignificant for the Reading Comprehension exam.

The Impact of Visualization Tendency in Phases of Problem-solving

  • Problem-solving ability is one of the most important learning outcomes for students to compete and accomplish in a knowledge-based society. It has been empirically proven that visualization plays a central role in problem-solving. The best performing problem-solver might have a strong visualization tendency. However, there is little research as to what factors of visualization tendency primarily related to problem-solving ability according to phases of problem-solving. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between visualization tendency and problem-solving ability, to determine which factors of visualization tendency influence problem-solving ability in each phase of problem-solving, and to examine different problem-solving ability from the perspective of the levels of visualization tendency. This study has found out that visualization tendency has a significant correlation with problem-solving ability. Especially, Generative Visualization and Spatial-Motor Visualization as sub-visualization tendency were more strongly related to each phase of problem-solving. It indicates that visualization tendency to generate and operate mental processing can be considered a major cognitive skill to improve problem-solving ability. Furthermore, students who have high visualization tendency also have significantly higher problem-solving ability than students with low visualization tendency. It shows that the levels of visualization tendency can predict variables related to students' problem-solving ability.

Comparison of Cognitive Loads between Koreans and Foreigners in the Reading Process

  • Objective: This study aims to measure cognitive load levels by analyzing the EEG of Koreans and foreigners, when they read a Korean text with care selected by level from the grammar and vocabulary aspects, and compare the cognitive load levels through quantitative values. The study results can be utilized as basic data for more scientific approach, when Korean texts or books are developed, and an evaluation method is built, when the foreigners encounter them for learning or an assignment. Background: Based on 2014, the number of the foreign students studying in Korea was 84,801, and they increase annually. Most of them are from Asian region, and they come to Korea to enter a university or a graduate school in Korea. Because those foreign students aim to learn within Universities in Korea, they receive Korean education from their preparation for study in Korea. To enter a university in Korea, they must acquire grade 4 or higher level in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), or they need to complete a certain educational program at each university's affiliated language institution. In such a program, the learners of the Korean language receive Korean education based on texts, except speaking domain, and the comprehension of texts can determine their academic achievements in studying after they enter their desired schools (Jeon, 2004). However, many foreigners, who finish a language course for the short-term, and need to start university study, cannot properly catch up with university classes requiring expertise with the vocabulary and grammar levels learned during the language course. Therefore, reading education, centered on a strategy to understand university textbooks regarded as top level reading texts to the foreigners, is necessary (Kim and Shin, 2015). This study carried out an experiment from a perspective that quantitative data on the readers of the main player of reading education and teaching materials need to be secured to back up the need for reading education for university study learners, and scientifically approach educational design. Namely, this study grasped the difficulty level of reading through the measurement of cognitive loads indicated in the reading activity of each text by dividing the difficulty of a teaching material (book) into eight levels, and the main player of reading into Koreans and foreigners. Method: To identify cognitive loads indicated upon reading Korean texts with care by Koreans and foreigners, this study recruited 16 participants (eight Koreans and eight foreigners). The foreigners were limited to the language course students studying the intermediate level Korean course at university-affiliated language institutions within Seoul Metropolitan Area. To identify cognitive load, as they read a text by level selected from the Korean books (difficulty: eight levels) published by King Sejong Institute (Sejonghakdang.org), the EEG sensor was attached to the frontal love (Fz) and occipital lobe (Oz). After the experiment, this study carried out a questionnaire survey to measure subjective evaluation, and identified the comprehension and difficulty on grammar and words. To find out the effects on schema that may affect text comprehension, this study controlled the Korean texts, and measured EEG and subjective satisfaction. Results: To identify brain's cognitive load, beta band was extracted. As a result, interactions (Fz: p =0.48; Oz: p =0.00) were revealed according to Koreans and foreigners, and difficulty of the text. The cognitive loads of Koreans, the readers whose mother tongue is Korean, were lower in reading Korean texts than those of the foreigners, and the foreigners' cognitive loads became higher gradually according to the difficulty of the texts. From the text four, which is intermediate level in difficulty, remarkable differences started to appear in comparison of the Koreans and foreigners in the beginner's level text. In the subjective evaluation, interactions were revealed according to the Koreans and foreigners and text difficulty (p =0.00), and satisfaction was lower, as the difficulty of the text became higher. Conclusion: When there was background knowledge in reading, namely schema was formed, the comprehension and satisfaction of the texts were higher, although higher levels of vocabulary and grammar were included in the texts than those of the readers. In the case of a text in which the difficulty of grammar was felt high in the subjective evaluation, foreigners' cognitive loads were also high, which shows the result of the loads' going up higher in proportion to the increase of difficulty. This means that the grammar factor functions as a stress factor to the foreigners' reading comprehension. Application: This study quantitatively evaluated the cognitive loads of Koreans and foreigners through EEG, based on readers and the text difficulty, when they read Korean texts. The results of this study can be used for making Korean teaching materials or Korean education content and topic selection for foreigners. If research scope is expanded to reading process using an eye-tracker, the reading education program and evaluation method for foreigners can be developed on the basis of quantitative values.
