Success Factors of Student Startups in Korea: From Employment Measures to Market Success

  • The Korean government has focused on universities or colleges as the main targets of its startup policy since the 2010s. However, the performance is not so good, with a low survival rate. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that underpin the success of student startups. First, through a review of the literature, this study compared the success factors of student startups with those of venture startups, which means the general startup sector, as well as youth startups, also a focus of startup policy targeting youngsters outside universities or colleges. Second, we analyzed case studies of startup companies connected University H. The literature review showed that the main target of student startups is the employment of university students. There is a lack of studies on success factors; existing studies only emphasize the entrepreneurship of students. The results of case studies showed several factors of success similar to those of general venture startups: founders, business model and resources including team, and mentoring.

  • This paper investigates the determinants of students' success in Vietnam through conducting online interviews and surveys with 2,500 Vietnamese students at eight famous universities in Vietnam. By applying both SPSS 22 and STATA software, the study is to evaluate the impact of four driver factors, which affect GPA, language efficacy, and personal achievement. These factors are psychological perspective, home environmental, student demographic, and school environmental. The research results emphasize a positive effect of psychological and home-environmental determinants, but the negative effect of school environmental factors on the students' success. Besides, the relationship between demographics and student success was tested and indicated that male students have a better language learning ability, but a low level of academic achievement than female students. The results also point out the impact of religious affiliation and ethnicity on personal achievement. Non-religious students are better achievers than those having a religion or those in minority ethnicity. Moreover, accumulated schooling years are negatively associated with students' success. The more working experience students accrued, the higher possibility they are successful. Finally, the finding provides an insight into students' success that might be useful to government authorities and other universities in designing policies for enhancing the quality of education.

대학생이 인식하는 학생성공 개념에 관한 탐색적 연구: CQR-M 분석을 중심으로 (An Exploratory Study on the Concept of Student Success Recognized by College Students)

  • 본 연구는 대학생이 인식하는 학생성공의 개념을 조사하기 위한 탐색적 연구이다. 학생들의 자유로운 생각을 듣기위해 온라인 설문지를 활용해 개방형 설문을 진행하고 99명의 응답을 분석하였다. 응답결과는 CQR-M(Consensual Qualitative Research-Modified)을 사용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 '학생성공의 의미', '학생성공을 위한 대학 환경 요인', '학생성공에 필요한 심리적 요인' 등 3개의 영역에서 25개 범주가 도출되었다. 첫 번째 영역인 대학생이 인식하는 '학생성공의 의미'에서는 '학업성취·취업 역량 증진·다양한 경험 쌓기·만족스러운 취업·원하는 진로 설정·관계형성 능력 증진·나만의 목표 설정과 달성·자기 개발·만족스러운 대학생활'의 9개의 범주가 도출되었다. 두 번째 영역인 '학생성공을 위한 대학 환경 요인'에서는 '진로개발 지원·직무역량 향상 시스템·대학생활 참여지원·인적 네트워크 형성 기회·학습역량 증진 시스템·경제적 지원 확대·학생 편의를 위한 환경'으로 7개 범주가 도출되었다. 세 번째 영역인 '학생성공에 필요한 심리적 요인'에서는 '학습능력·자기효능감·대인관계 유능성·자기인식 및 개선·직무역량·자기조절 능력·풍부한 경험·진로인식·자존감'의 9개의 범주가 도출되었다. 각 영역별 빈도와 결과를 분석하여 제시하고, 연구의 의의와 제한점을 논의하였으며, 후속연구에 대한 제언을 하였다.

비행교수와 학생조종사의 성격특성에 따른 비행입문과정 훈련결과 분석 (The Effects of Personality Types of Flight Instructor and Student Pilot on the Introductory Flight Training Results)

  • In this study, MBTI(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) test was carried out targeting flight instructors and student pilots in charge of introductory flight training course. The results was analyzed in accordance with the personality type, the preferred indicator, and the combination of preferred indicators in order to see how these characteristics affect the flight training results. Most of personality types of the instructor, regardless of the attitude category such as E or I, were -STJ(70.6%), however the student pilot showed a variety of personality types, rather than professors. Sensing-type(S) students showed higher academic achievement scores than Intuition-type(N), and Judging-type(J) students showed higher academic achievement scores and pilot qualification scores than Perceiving-type(P). The success rate of Extraversion-type(E) student pilots was higher than that of Introversion-type(I) student pilots. As the personality combinations of instructor and student pilot, the academic achievement scores of Judging-Judging(J-J) type were higher than those of Perceiving-Perceiving(P-P) type. The combination of Extraversion-Extraversion(E-E) type showed higher success rate than Extraversion-Introversion(E-I). This result suggests that if both instructor and student pilot have same attitude of Extroversion(E), good training results can be expected.

4주간 금연성공 영향요인에 관한 연구: 금연 프로그램에 참여한 대학생 흡연자 중심으로 (Factors Affecting Smoking Cessation Success during 4-week Smoking Cessation Program for University Students)

  • Purpose: Smoking cessation interventions are important because university students are vulnerable to smoking and good health practices during their university lives greatly affects their health status. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting smoking cessation success among the university students who participated in the 4-week smoking cessation program. Methods: This study was conducted with 101 university student smokers. To identify the factors affecting the success of smoking cessation, a logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: In Model 1, without the smoking cessation aids variable, when the frequency of face-to-face counseling was greater, the success rate of smoking cessation was 1.70 times higher. In Model 2, including the smoking cessation aids variable, when the nicotine dependence score was higher, the success rate of smoking cessation was 0.72 times lower, and when the number of smoking cessation aids used was greater, the success rate of smoking cessation was 1.40 times higher. Conclusion: Smoking cessation aids are essential to increase the success of short-term smoking cessation, and face-to-face counseling and telephone counseling should be provided continuously to maintain long-term smoking cessation.

Challenges Faced by a Mathematically Strong Student Intransferring his Success in Mathematics to Statistics: A Case Study

  • This study qualitatively investigates the nature of the challenges that a student who is highly successful in mathematics faces in learning college-level elementary statistics. The study draws on the constructs of eagerness, flexibility and willingness to characterize the necessary disposition for critical thinking that is essential in learning statistics. The case study is based on data collected through a survey assessment and a follow-up interview with a mathematics major enrolled in an elementary college statistics course at the time of the study. The qualitative analysis relies on the student's verbal descriptions of the challenges he was experiencing in the course. The findings suggest that while his strong inclination towards inquisitive learning and strong understanding of mathematical concepts supported this student's mathematics learning, the same characteristics might have been causing him difficulties in learning college-level elementary statistics.

  • 본 연구는 학교에서 얻어지는 교사들의 경험을 바탕으로 인터넷을 통한 학생상담의 효율성 증대를 위한 상담 사례 검색 시스템을 구축하는데 있다. 이 시스템은 관리자 모듈과 사용자 모듈로 구성되어 있다. 사용자 모듈은 상담사례 검색 및 입력, 게시판, 자료실 등을 이용할 수 있게 되어 있으며, 관리자 모듈은 자료 관리와 회원 관리 기능을 제공한다. 본 상담사례 검색 시스템은 학생 상담의 성공 확률을 증대시킬 수 있다. 교사가 인터넷을 이용하여 그들의 상담사례를 원격지에서도 쉽게 공유할 수 있기 때문이다.

영재와 평재 고등학생들의 성공에 대한 인식, Grit, 열망 및 성취목적 비교 (Comparisons of Perceptions of Success, Grit, Aspirations, and Achievement Goal Orientation between Gifted and Non-gifted High School Students)

  • 본 연구는 영재와 평재 고등학생을 대상으로 이들의 성공에 대한 인식, Grit(관심의 일관성, 노력의 인내), 열망(내재열망 - 신체적 건강, 자아성장, 소속감, 공동체 기여; 외재열망 - 명성, 이미지, 경제적 성공) 및 성취목적(숙달목적, 수행접근 목적, 수행회피 목적)에는 어떤 차이를 보이는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 영재학교 2개교에서 200명, 일반 고등학교 2개교에서 350명, 총 550명을 표집 대상으로 하였다. 이 중 불성실하게 응답한 54명을 제외한 496명(회수율 90.18%, 영재학생 153명, 평재학생 343명)을 최종 분석대상으로 선정하였다. 본 연구 결과, 영재학생과 평재학생 모두의 경우, '성공은 내가 통제할 수 없는 것'이라고 생각하는 비중이 50%를 상회하는 것으로 나타났으며, 성공에 영향을 미치는 요인들 중 '근면'을 가장 많이 선택하였다. 반면에, 성공에 영향을 미치는 요인들 중 '부유한 가정환경'을 선택하는 하는 비중이 영재학생들(48.2%)에 비해 평재학생들(60.4%)이 많은 것으로 나타났다. Grit의 하위요인 중 '노력의 인내'와 성취목적 하위 요인 중 '숙달목적 지향성'에서 영재학생이 평재학생에 비해 유의미하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, Grit의 하위요인 중 '노력의 인내' 요인은 영재와 평재 학생들의 '숙달 지향성'과 '수행접근 지향성'에 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 영재와 평재학생의 성공에 대한 인식, Grit, 열망 및 성취목적을 비교한 본 연구 결과는 이들의 성취증진 방안을 강구하는데 많은 교육적 시사점을 제공해줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

의과대학 학생인턴제의 운영 일례 연구 (The Student Internship Experience)

  • Recently, the student internship has been introduced in medical schools as a way of preparing students with training experience and medical knowledge by performing clinical practice. This study discusses student internship management and ways to operate the internship effectively. Catholic University of Daegu School of Medicine has set up a 6-week internship program for fourth-year undergraduate students. In most of the sections, students have shown their satisfaction, particularly when they have received appropriate feedback and attention from their professors. The students found that performing the evaluation and treatment of patients and individual chart recording were informative and helpful. However, they felt a lack of basic knowledge and clinical skills and had difficulty in understanding their roles and in time management. The success of an internship depends on the passion and interest that professors show for their students along with active support from the other faculty and thoughtful consideration of patients and all their friends and family members. In addition, with growing awareness of the need for the student internship, it is necessary that the school executive provide financial and administrative support to the faculty and staff, clarify roles and the work needed to perform the tasks, ensure substantiality of the individual program with professors or departments, provide enough preliminary courses, and monitor outcomes and reflection.

Development of the Drop-outs Prediction Model for Intelligent Drop-outs Prevention System

  • The student dropout prediction is an indispensable for many intelligent systems to measure the educational system and success rate of all university. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an intelligent dropout prediction system that minimizes the situation by adopting the proactive process through an effective model that predicts the students who are at risk of dropout. In this paper, the main data sets for students dropout predictions was used as questionnaires and university information. The questionnaire was constructed based on theoretical and empirical grounds about factor affecting student's performance and causes of dropout. University Information included student grade, interviews, attendance in university life. Through these data sets, the proposed dropout prediction model techniques was classified into the risk group and the normal group using statistical methods and Naive Bays algorithm. And the intelligence dropout prediction system was constructed by applying the proposed dropout prediction model. We expect the proposed study would be used effectively to reduce the students dropout in university.
