  • Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams are structural members that predominantly fail in shear. Therefore, determining the shear strength of these types of beams is very important. The strut-and-tie method is commonly used to design deep beams, and this method has been adopted in many building codes (ACI318-14, Eurocode 2-2004, CSA A23.3-2004). In this study, the efficiency of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting the shear strength of RC deep beams is investigated as a different approach to the strut-and-tie method. An ANN model was developed using experimental data for 214 normal and high-strength concrete deep beams from an existing literature database. Seven different input parameters affecting the shear strength of the RC deep beams were selected to create the ANN structure. Each parameter was arranged as an input vector and a corresponding output vector that includes the shear strength of the RC deep beam. The ANN model was trained and tested using a multi-layered back-propagation method. The most convenient ANN algorithm was determined as trainGDX. Additionally, the results in the existing literature and the accuracy of the strut-and-tie model in ACI318-14 in predicting the shear strength of the RC deep beams were investigated using the same test data. The study shows that the ANN model provides acceptable predictions of the ultimate shear strength of RC deep beams (maximum $R^2{\approx}0.97$). Additionally, the ANN model is shown to provide more accurate predictions of the shear capacity than all the other computed methods in this study. The ACI318-14-STM method was very conservative, as expected. Moreover, the study shows that the proposed ANN model predicts the shear strengths of RC deep beams better than does the strut-and-tie model approaches.

  • The algorithm and program which implement the bond-slip behavior of pre-tensioned concrete beams to the nonlinear strut-tie model approach, are developed in this study. The validity of the algorithm and program is verified through the strut-tie model evaluation of the strength and behavior of two pre-tensioned concrete deep beams which were failed by bond-slip.

  • In this paper, the linear and nonlinear strut-tie model approaches for the analysis and design of concrete structures are suggested. The validity of the approaches are examined through the strength analysis of four dapped-end beams tested to failure. According to the analysis results, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach which takes the various characteristics of nonlinear behaviors into account in the analysis and design of structural concrete and predicts the strength of structural concrete proven to be an effective method for structural analysis and design.

  • The concrete corbels consist of various failure mechanisms such as the yielding of the tension reinforcement, the crushing or splitting from compression concrete struts, and localized bearing or shearing failure under the loading plate. However, predicting those failure mechanisms is very difficult. In this study, the ACI 318-02, the softened strut-tie model approach, and the nonlinear strut-tie model approach are applied to ultimate strength analysis of normal strength concrete corbels tested to failure. From the result of the analysis, an effective analysis and design method of normal strength concrete corbels is suggested.

  • PSC box girder is widely used in a domestic bridge and overpass, etc., therefore, the design and construction technique for the PSC box girder is developing day by day. Even if it were so, however, the design for anchorage zone in PSC box girder has depended on common sense and empirical results. And it is the current situation that the designer has difficulty due to inadequacy of provisions in the domestic design code and lack of understanding for behavior of anchorage zone. Besides, the design based on Leonhardt's method is being done in general, but the design may be various even for the same structure because of the difference in a way of applying. In this paper, therefore, anchorage zone in PSC box girder bridge is analyzed and designed by using strut-tie model. Adequacy for the application of strut-tie model is verified by comparison with the way used in current design practice, and this study presents that strut-tie model can be a rational and an economical design than current design methods.

  • Predicting the failure modes of reinforced concrete corbels is difficult because the reinforced concrete corbels show the shapes of sudden shear failures at even slight deflection. For this reason, an exact analysis method is demanded highly. In this study, the validity of the grid softened strut-tie model method suggested for concrete member analysis was examined through the ultimate strength evaluation of the reinforced concrete corbels tested to failure. The evaluated ultimate strengths by the grid softened strut-tie model method were compared with those by the ACI 318-02 and the softened strut-tie model method.

  • Strut-and-tie modeling method, which evolved on truss-model approach, has generally been preferred for the design of complex reinforced concrete structures and structural elements that have critical shear behavior. Some structural members having disturbed regions require exceptional detailing for all support and loading conditions, such as the beam-column connections, deep beams, short columns or corbels. Considering the general expectation of exhibiting brittle behavior, corbels are somewhat dissimilar to other shear critical structures. In this study, reinforcement layout of a corbel model was determined by the participation of structural optimization and strut-and-tie modeling methods, and an experimental comparison was performed against a conventionally designed model.

  • This study investigates the durability of strut bar at car through structural and fatigue analyses. In this study, there are model 1 and model 2 as the analysis subjects. Model 1 is the existed one and model 2 is the improved one added with the reinforced part. Model 1 has the maximum equivalent stress of 165.11 MPa shown intensively at the welding part between the bracket and the bar. This stress is distributed over at the part of model 2 reinforced with this part. In case of fatigue analysis, there are three kinds of fatigue load as SAE bracket history, SAE transmission and sample history. The maximum fatigue life at SAE bracket history among three kinds of fatigue loads has the least value of $3.3693{\times}10^5$ cycles. The maximum fatigue life of model 2 becomes longer than that of model 1. As model 2 has the fatigue damage less than model 1, model 2 has the safety than model 1. As the fatigue durability about the configuration of strut bar is analyzed, it is thought to apply this study result into the real part effectively.

  • In order to correct the strut interference in wind tunnel tests, image methods are conventionally used. Because of their excessive extra runs, some alternatives have been tried to reduce the extra runs. In this study, these alternatives were reviewed and checked by the strut interference evaluation with the panel code, CMARC. The present work shows that the strut interference is free from neither model configuration nor model attitude. This dependency makes the alternatives to the image method unfeasible. The 3-run image method was also evaluated. It worked well even for the exaggerated windshield. At this point, reducing the image runs by neglecting parameters affecting minor influence would be best.
