In this paper, we address the numerical investigation on the effect of liquid compressibility onto the natural frequency of liquid-filled containers. Traditionally the liquid motion has been treated as an ideal fluid motion. However, from the numerical experiments for the axisymmetrical free-vibration of cylindrical liquid-storage tanks, we found that the relative difference in natural frequencies between ideal and compressible motions becomes remarkable, as the slenderness of tank or the relative liquid-fill height becomes larger. Therefore, in such cases of dynamic systems, the liquid compressibility becomes an important parameter, for the accurate vibration analysis. For the free-vibration analysis of compressible liquid-structure interaction we employed the coupled finite element formulation expressed in terms of the acoustic wave pressure and the structure deformation.
Ship shaped FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) units are the most commonly used floating production units to extract hydrocarbons from reservoirs under the seabed. These structures are usually much larger than general cargo ships and have their natural frequency outside the wave frequency range. This results in the response to first order wave forces acting on the hull to be negligible. However, second order difference frequency forces start to significantly impact the motions of the structure. When the difference frequency between wave components matches the roll natural frequency, the structure experiences a significant roll motion which is also termed as second order roll. This paper describes the theory and numerical implementation behind the calculation of second order forces and motions of any general floating structure subjected to waves. The numerical implementation is validated in zero speed case against the commercial code OrcaFlex. The paper also describes in detail the popular approximations used to simplify the computation of second order forces and provides a discussion on the limitations of each approximation.
This paper presents an experimental system, where an object extracted from an image sequence is embedded into the desired position in a scene. First, a moving object is detected and the 3-D structure is obtained by SFM analysis of comer trajectories. We constrained the motion to translational motion only. Extracted objects are classified by matching with 3-D models and then the structure of the occluded part is restored. Camera calibration is performed for the background scene which will embed the object. Finally, the object is embedded into the scene. In the experiments, we used synthetic image sequences generated with OpenGL library for easy evaluation of the 3-D structure estimation.
The very large flcating structure which am be used for as airport may be as large as several kilomet wide. The first order wave forces as well as wave drift forces are very important forces on such a very large floating In the present studv, the time simulation of motion responses with dolphin-moored VLFS in waves is presented The coeffcients and wave forces involved in the equations are obtained from a three-dimensionul panel method in the frequc The horizontal drift forces and mooring forces for dolphin systems are taken into account. As for numerical example, analyses are carried out for a VLFS in irregular wave condition
We have analyzed the dielectrophoretic(DEP) force on a cell in a micro planar electrode structure. We fabricate a micro planar electrode structure using micro machining technology and measure the motion of a cell that is accelerated by DEP force. DEP force on a cell is calculated by curve fitting the motion of a cell. Radish and yeast are used for the experiment. In case of radish, DEP force is increased as the voltage and the frequency is increased, and in case of yeast, DEP force is increased only as the voltage is increased DEP force on a yeast does not vary when the frequency varies from 1 MHz to 3 MHz. The result will be helpful to the manipulation of cells using DEP force.
In the present paper it is aimed to perform the stochastic dynamic analysis of fluid and fluidstructure systems by using the Lagrangian approach. For that reason, variable-number-nodes twodimensional isoparametric fluid finite elements are programmed in Fortran language by the authors and incorporated into a general-purpose computer program for stochastic dynamic analysis of structure systems, STOCAL. Formulation of the fluid elements includes the effects of compressible wave propagation and surface sloshing motion. For numerical example a rigid fluid tank and a dam-reservoir interaction system are selected and modeled by finite element method. Results obtained from the modal analysis are compared with the results of the analytical and numerical solutions. The Pacoima Dam record S16E component recorded during the San Fernando Earthquake in 1971 is used as a ground motion. The mean of maximum values of displacements and hydrodynamic pressures are compared with the deterministic analysis results.
Dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) in the form of tuned sloshing dampers (TSDs) and tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are commonly used to reduce the wind-induced motion of high-rise buildings. Full-scale performance of structure-DVA systems must be evaluated during the DVA commissioning process using structural monitoring data. While the random decrement technique (RDT) is sometimes employed to evaluate the DVA performance, it is shown to have no theoretical justification for application to structure-DVA systems, and to produce erroneous results. Subsequently, several practical methods with a sound theoretical basis are presented and illustrated using simulated and real-world data. By monitoring the responses of the structure and DVA simultaneously, it is possible to directly measure the effective damping of the system or perform system identification from which the DVA performance can be evaluated.
The rocking foundation is effective for reducing structural seismic demand and avoiding overdesign of the foundation. It is crucial to evaluate the performance of rocking foundations because they cause plastic hinging in the soil. In this study, to derive optimized ground motion intensity measures (IMs) for rocking foundations, the efficiency of IMs correlated with engineering demand parameters (EDPs) was estimated through the coefficient determination using a physical modeling database for rocking shallow foundations. Foundation deformations, the structural horizontal drift ratio, and contribution in drift from foundation rotation and sliding were selected as crucial EDPs for the evaluation of rocking foundation systems. Among 15 different IMs, the peak ground velocity exhibited the most efficient parameters correlated with the EDPs, and it was discovered to be an efficient ground motion IM for predicting the seismic performance of rocking foundations. For vector regression, which uses two IMs to present the EDPs, the IMs indicating time features improved the efficiency of the regression curves, but the correlation was poor when these are used independently. Moreover, the ratio of the column-hinging base shear coefficient to the rocking base shear coefficient showed obvious trends for the accurate assessment of the seismic performance of rocking foundation-structure systems.
In this paper, horizontal seismic responses of a structure built on a sunken mat foundation were compared with those built on a solid embedded mat foundation to investigate the effect of a sunken mat foundation on the horizontal response of a structure. Seismic analyses of a structure laid on the embedded mat foundation were performed by utilizing a pseudo-3D finite element software of P3DASS. Three bedrock earthquake records downloaded from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center database were scaled to reproduce weak-moderate earthquakes. Weak, medium, and stiff soil layers were considered for the seismic analyses of the structure-foundation-soil system. Parametric studies were performed for foundation radius, foundation embedment depth, and shear wave velocity of a soil layer to investigate their effect on the seismic response spectrum. The study result showed that the design spectrum of a structure built on a sunken mat foundation was similar to that with a solid embedded mat foundation showing a slight difference due to almost the same seismic base motion beneath both embedded foundations.
