  • It is difficult to explain the effects of complex variable loading experienced by the machine and the structure only with the studies of the single-overload itself. Hence, it is thought that the variation of overload-holding time are required to explain the effects more clearly. The effects of the overload were analyzed by means of the crack retardation, and the fractography on retardation zone. A characteristic of the fractography on retardation zone was that striation distribution did not appear due to decreased crack driving force. Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed with the circular shaft which has two hole defects.

  • Many researchers have dealt with the problems of fracture mechanics. Generally, these researches are concerned with crack in isotropic material without other micro defects. Actual structure, however, may contain micro defects as well as crack in manufacture processing or operation. If it contains mi defects near a crack, some different characteristics will be appear in fracture behaviors of the crack. This study examines the effect of the micro defect on stress intensity factor of center slant crack rectangular plate subjected to uniform uniaxial tensile stress. In this study, boundary element method(BEM) is used for analysis in stress intensity factor(SIF).

  • Crack initiation and short crack propagation was studied on the polished notched surfaces of Cr-Mo prealloy sintered steels with 7.35 $g.cm^{-3}$ sintered density. An ultrasonic resonance test system operating in push-pull mode at 20 kHz and R=-1 was used. It showed that crack initiation took place in several places, small cracks growing oriented to the local pore structure rather than to stress orientation. Their growth rate is markedly higher than the corresponding one of long cracks. Finally, several microcracks join to form a dominant crack.

  • The hybrid-type penalty method (HPM) is suitable for representing failure phenomena occurring during the transition from continua to discontinua in materials such as concrete. Initiation and propagation of dominant cracks and branching of cracks can easily be modeled as a discrete crack. The HPM represents a discrete crack by eliminating the penalty that represents the separation of the elements at the intersection boundary. This treatment is easy because no change in the degrees of freedom for the discrete crack is necessary. In addition, it is important to evaluate the correct deformation of the continua before the crack formation is initiated. To achieve this, we implemented a constitutive model of concrete for the HPM. In this paper, we explain the implemented constitutive model and describe the simulation of an anchor bolt pullout test using the HPM demonstrating its capability for evaluating progressive failure.

  • In this study, the effect of external restraint on the thermal stresses and thermal cracking mode in mass concrete are analysed using the two major factors affecting external restraint such as the ratio of width go height of the placed structure (L/H) and the elastic modulus of base structure (E). For this parametric study, many cases with different values of L/H and Er are analysed by the FEM program and the co-relationship of the those major factors is examined. To evaluate the effect of external restraint on the thermal behavior of placing structure, internal restraint stress caused by temperature difference is subtracted from total thermal stress. In the case of small value of L/H or Er, it shows as internally restricted mode indicating maximum tensile stress in surface at early age, and the external restraint makes the possibility of thermal cracking higher. However, in the case of the large values of L/H and Er, the crack index at center is smaller than at surface due to the effect of external restraint. Thus, the initial location of the thermal crack is shifted from the surface to the center and the resulting crack is formed at later age.

  • The deterioration of PC box girder may cause serious effect on the durability of PC structure compared to that of RC structures. In the durability assessment of PC box girder bridges, a quantitive model on crack width is considered as a measure of durability. This study suggests a durability limit state model for PC box girder bridges. This durability limit state model in formulated based on the conventional models on the cracks in concrete. And the allowable crack width is taken as an assumed value established by the design specification or provided by the maintenance authority of the structure.

  • Dehydration and micro crack thermal expansion occur in cement hydrates of concrete structure heated by fire for a long time. The characteristic of concrete exposed to high temperature can be analyzed from distribution of porosity and pore size. Porosity showed a tendency to increase irrespective of specimen types. This is due to both the outbreak of collapse of gel comprising the cement and a micro crack by heating. Porosity did not affect the variety of specimen and increased with the same tendency throughout every specimen. In addition, the deteriorate of compressive strength resulted from increase in porosity

  • Because of the existence of stress interaction field made by other defects and propagating cracks, the structure may be weakened. Therefore in this study, the crack behavior in the interaction field made by two different cracks is studied experimentally. In the experiment, vertical distance between two cracks and applied stress are varied to make different stress interacted field. In addition, the effect of plastic zone is used to examine crack propagation path and rate. Three types of crack propagation in the interacted field were found, and crack propagating path and rate of two cracks were significantly changed according to different applied stress as each crack propagates. And the results are attributed to the effect of the size and shape of the plastic zone.

  • Delaminations and cracks are common failures in structures. They may significantly reduce the stiffness of the structure and affect their vibration characteristics. In the present study, an analytical solution is developed to study the effect of an edge crack on the vibration characteristics of delaminated beams. The rotational spring model, the 'free mode' and 'constrained mode' assumptions in delamination vibration are adopted. This is the first study on how an edge crack affects the vibration characteristic of delaminated beams and new nondimensional parameters are developed accordingly. The crack may occur inside or outside the delaminated area and both cases are studied. Results show that the effect of delamination length and thickness-wise location on reducing the natural frequencies is aggravated by an increasing crack depth. The location of the crack also influences the effect of delamination, but such influence is different between crack occurring inside and outside the delaminated area. The difference of natural frequencies between 'free mode' and 'constrained mode' increases then decreases as the crack moves from one side of the delaminated region to the other side, peaking at the middle. The analytical results of this study can serve as the benchmark for FEM and other numerical solutions.

  • Bonded composite-patch repair has been widely used to restore or extend the service life of damaged structures due to its effectiveness as a mechanical repair technique. In this paper using extended finite element method (XFEM), three-dimensional crack models are developed to examine the fracture behavior of centrally cracked aluminum plates repaired with single and double sided composite patches. Stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip is used as the fracture criterion. In this regard, the effects of the crack lengths, patch materials, orientation of plies, adhesive and patch thickness are examined to estimate the SIF of the repaired plate and the repair performance. The obtained results show that composite patches have significant effect on reduction of the SIF at the crack tip. It is also proved that using double symmetric repair, in comparison to single one, reduces considerably SIF at the crack tip. Hence, the residual strength can be improved significantly as well as fatigue life of the structure. Investigation of ply orientation effects shows SIF increase as the ply orientation is changed from $0^{\circ}$ (perpendicular to the advancing crack) to $90^{\circ}$ (parallel to the crack line). However, the effectiveness of the ply orientation depends on the loading direction and the crack direction.
