This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the analysis of strength of medium and small high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a width / ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin car-ferries.

Twin-hulls frequently incur structural damage at connecting members between the hull and deck induced by pitching motions during voyages. so, reasonable reinforcement is necessary around vulnerable spots such as corner knuckle, the chine bottom and inner hull. Since guidelines for structural design are not clear, engineers often respond by reinforcing plate thickness, changing stiffener sizes and reducing frame spacing, etc. These members constitute about 85 % of the longitudinal dimensions of the ship, so it is necessary to locally reinforce certain points to minimize weight stress, and also solve construction cost problems while securing the freeboard margin. Therefore, we developed a new program by analyzing the structural design procedures for the twin car-ferries based on Korean Register of Shipping (KR) High Speed Craft Rules, identifying items that need to be added. In order to ensure the reliability of buckling estimations for procedures and design programs, we conducted a comparative study with other standards and confirmed that differences were minimal.

The structural safety of small craft, such as steel ships and FRP ships, can be estimated using the measurement test of the hull plate thickness or the longitudinal bending strength test. A polyethylene boat is made using inexpensive HDPE and can be mass produced. The structural safety of a polyethylene boat cannot be guaranteed because a polyethylene boat hull is notspecified in the KR technical rules. The inspection procedure of sailing yachts and pleasure boats and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 propose the structural strength required for small crafts as the drop test height. Therefore, in this study, the drop test of a polyethylene boat hull was carried out based on the inspection procedure of a sailing yacht and pleasure boat and the drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5. The drop load was acquired by the drop acceleration ofa boat hull. Structural analysis and safety of a polyethylene boat were performed by the drop load and allowable stress criteria. The calculation results of the hull plate thickness by structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5 showed that polyethylene boat hull was more than two times thicker than a steel ship hull and the boat hull determined by the inspection procedure of sailing yacht and pleasure boat and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 was more than 1.2 times thicker than the boat hull determined by structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5. Therefore, inspection procedure of sailing yachts and pleasure boats and drop test method of ISO standard 12215-5 was much more conservative than the structural design specification of ISO standard 12215-5 and could be used as the structural design method of a polyethylene boat.
The present Common Structural Rules for double hull oil tanker is not included the residual strength, which is one of the functional requirements in design part of Goal-based new ship construction standards (GBS). The GBS will be enforced after July 1, 2016. The requirement related residual strength has the goal to build safe ship even if she has the specified damages due to marine accidents including collision and grounding. In order to assess the residual strength based on risk for structural damages according to GBS, tons of nonlinear FE analysis work taking into account various types of damage will be needed. The Smith's method, a kind of simplified method for the strength analysis is very useful for this purpose. In this paper, the residual strength assessments based on ultimate strength using Smith's method were carried out. The objected ship is VLCC with stranding damage in bottom structures. Also, the results were compared with that of nonlinear FE analysis using three cargo hold model.
In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing design rules for stainless steel members, while the investigation on bolted connections is relatively limited, in particular at elevated temperatures. In this paper, experimental and numerical investigations on stainless steel bolted connections at ambient and elevated temperatures from the literature were reviewed. Firstly, the research program that focused on structural behavior of cold-formed stainless steel (CFSS) bolted connections at elevated temperatures carried out by the authors were summarized. Over 400 CFSS single shear and double shear bolted connection specimens were tested. The tests were conducted in the temperature ranged from 22 to $950^{\circ}C$ using both steady state and transient state test methods. It is shown that the connection strengths decrease as the temperature increases in the similar manner for the steady state test results and the transient state test results. Generally, the deterioration of the connection strengths showed a similar tendency of reduction to those of the material properties for the same type of stainless steel regardless of different connection types and different configurations. It is also found that the austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4571 generally has better resistance than the stainless steel EN 1.4301 and EN 1.4162 for bolted connections at elevated temperatures. Secondly, extensive parametric studies that included 450 specimens were performed using the verified finite element models. Based on both the experimental and numerical results, bearing factors are proposed for bearing resistances of CFSS single shear and double shear bolted connections that subjected to bearing failure in the temperature ranged from 22 to $950^{\circ}C$. The bearing resistances of bolted connections obtained from the tests and numerical analyses were compared with the nominal strengths calculated from the current international stainless steel specifications, and also compared with the predicted strengths calculated using the proposed design equations. It is shown that the proposed design equations are generally more accurate and reliable than the current design rules in predicting the bearing resistances of CFSS (EN 1.4301, EN 1.4571 and EN 1.4162) bolted connections at elevated temperatures. Lastly, the proposed design rules were further assessed by the available 58 results of stainless steel bolted connections subjected to bearing failure in the literature. It is found that the proposed design rules are also applicable to the bearing resistance design of other stainless steel grades, including austenitic stainless steel (EN 1.4306), ferritic stainless steel (EN 1.4016) and duplex stainless steel (EN 1.4462).
This paper portrays software reuse as analogical mapping and rule development. In order to explore the impacts of inconsistent representationS on the cognitive process of software resuse,it manipulates the intermal representations of source and target problems and their program solutions. The experimental design for this study has two factors:1)the degree of structural consistency between the source problem and the target problem,and2) the degree of structural consistency between the source problem and the source solution.A full-scale protocol analysis reveals that these two factors influence the cognitive process of mapping between source and target, the process of developing rules, and the interrelation between analogical mapping and rule development. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of these results for software reuse.

The increase of computing power makes stochastic optimization algorithms available in structural design. One of the stochastic algorithms, simulated annealing algorithm, has been applied to various structural optimization problems. By applying several cooling schedules such as simulated annealing (SA), Boltzmann annealing (BA), fast annealing (FA) and adaptive simulated annealing (ASA), truss structures are optimized to improve the quality of objective functions and reduce the number of function evaluations. In this paper, many cooling parameters have been applied to the cooling schedule of ASA. The influence of cooling parameters is investigated to find the rules of thumb for using ASA. Tn addition, the cooling schedule combined with BA and ASA is applied to the optimization of ten bar-truss and twenty five bar-truss structure.

Naval vessels are not regulated by the class rules, but by the special regulations. This study introduces the concept and characteristics of the regulations of U.S. Navy which has been the most reliable standards in design of naval vessels in Korea, and intends to help designers to comprehend the effect of each regulation on design results. Also, an optimum structural design method combined with the structural analysis theory is proposed for naval vessels following the regulations of U.S. Navy and is applied to the design of a naval vessel. After application of the optimum design method, its validity is shown and an optimum design of midship section is obtained. In addition, the optimum spaces or longitudinals and transverse web frames are found and the effect of main design variables can be investigated.

A WIG(Wing-In-Ground effect) craft flies close to the water surface by utilizing a cushion of relatively high pressurized air between its wing and water surface. This implies that when one designs such craft it is important to have lightweight structures with adequate strength to resist external loads with some margins. To investigate this requirement, this paper deals with the structural analysis of the bottom plate of small WIG craft having a design landing weight of 1.2-ton. As building materials for the WIG craft, pre-preg carbon/epoxy composites are considered. The strength information of the bottom plate is obtained using the first-ply-failure analysis in conjunction with a mid-plane symmetric laminated plate theory. As a result, the first-ply-failure location, load and deflection of the bottom plate are obtained. The calculated strength information is compared with the water reaction load for the bottom plate of seaplanes considered when they land on the water surface -the same fluid-structure interaction mechanism as that of WIG craft. In the calculation of seaplane water reaction load information, the rules shown in FAR(Federal Aviation Regulations) Part 25 are used. Through the comparison, the structural integrity of the bottom plate for the WIG craft is checked.

In the present work, FEM analyses are carried out to investigate the fractures occurred within the structural part in the course of combustion experiment. The loss of structural integrity stems from the localized deformation and the damage induced due to a severe change in the thermal load. Moreover, the two-back stress evolution model is proposed using the Armstrong-Frederick and the Phillips' rules to depict the plastic deformation, and the continuum damage mechanics is also incorporated into the present model. It is noted that the present model is able to formulate a wide range of constitutive description with ease. The numerical results depicts that a severe strain localization and damage evolution can be obtained depending on the dominant back stress.
