The structural design of an optical-telescope assembly (OTA) for satellite laser ranging (SLR) is conducted in two steps. First, the results of a parametric study of the major design variables (e.g. dimension and shape) of the OTA part are explained, and the detailed structural design of the OTA is derived, considering the design requirements. Among the structural-shape concepts of various OTAs, the Serrurier truss concept is selected in this study, and the collimation of the telescope according to the design variables is extensively discussed. After generating finite-element models for different structural shapes, self-gravity analyses are performed. To minimize the deflection and tilt of the mirror and frame for the OTA under the limited design requirements, a parametric study is conducted according to design variables such as the shapes of the upper and lower struts and the spider vane. The structural features found in the parametric study are described. Finally, the OTA structure is designed in detail to maintain the optical alignment by balancing the gravity deflections of the upper and lower trusses using the optimal combination of the parameters. Additionally, thermal analysis of the optical telescope design is evaluated.
The design optimization of a cold-formed steel portal frame building is considered in this paper. The proposed genetic algorithm (GA) optimizer considers both topology (i.e., frame spacing and pitch) and cross-sectional sizes of the main structural members as the decision variables. Previous GAs in the literature were characterized by poor convergence, including slow progress, that usually results in excessive computation times and/or frequent failure to achieve an optimal or near-optimal solution. This is the main issue addressed in this paper. In an effort to improve the performance of the conventional GA, a niching strategy is presented that is shown to be an effective means of enhancing the dissimilarity of the solutions in each generation of the GA. Thus, population diversity is maintained and premature convergence is reduced significantly. Through benchmark examples, it is shown that the efficient GA proposed generates optimal solutions more consistently. A parametric study was carried out, and the results included. They show significant variation in the optimal topology in terms of pitch and frame spacing for a range of typical column heights. They also show that the optimized design achieved large savings based on the cost of the main structural elements; the inclusion of knee braces at the eaves yield further savings in cost, that are significant.

The structural performance is degraded in case of embedding the array antenna for reconnaissance and surveillance into the wing skin structures. In this paper, the optimal design for the thickness of composite hat-shaped stiffener which is reinforced embedded array antenna on the simplified composite wing box was conducted. To select the basic shape of hat-shaped stiffener, structural analysis was carry out using the commercial finite element analysis program while changing the web slope and flange length of hat-shaped stiffener. The optimal thickness of the composite hat-shaped stiffeners was determined by using commercial optimization program such as VisualDOC and commercial FEA program with considering stresses and buckling constraints.
Optimal sensor placement (OSP) is an integral component in the design of an effective structural health monitoring (SHM) system. This paper describes the implementation of a novel collaborative-climb monkey algorithm (CMA), which combines the artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) with the monkey algorithm (MA), as a strategy for the optimal placement of a predefined number of sensors. Different from the original MA, the dual-structure coding method is adopted for the representation of design variables. The collaborative-climb process that can make the full use of the monkeys' experiences to guide the movement is proposed and incorporated in the CMA to speed up the search efficiency of the algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by a numerical example with a high-rise structure. The results show that the proposed CMA algorithm can provide a robust design for sensor networks, which exhibits superior convergence characteristics when compared to the original MA using the dual-structure coding method.

Recently, high accuracy and high precision are required in various industrial fields that are composed of semiconductor manufacturing apparatus and ultra precision positioning apparatus and information system and so on. The positioning technology is a very important one among them. This technology has been rapidly developed, its field needs for positioning accuracy to high as submicron. It is expected that accuracy with 10 nm in precision working and accuracy with 1 nm in ultra precision working are reached at the beginning of 2000s. Recently, to accomplish this positioning technology, many researches are concerned about it and make efforts it. This paper contain design technology of ultra precision 2-axis(X-Y Delta) stage for materialize to positioning accuracy with submicron, where, Delta stage is design as optimum against load and disturbance. And computer simulation is performed for stability and dynamic characteristic of Delta stage.

In this study, a chair with 5 or 6 legs was designed using the commercial program CATIA V5 in order to efficiently design considering the load conditions. In addition, the stress analysis and shape optimization were carried out using ANSYS Workbench for the chair consisting of stainless steel, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and structural steel. As a result, a chair with five legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the end of the edge of the wheel parts and on the other hand, a chair with six legs showed the maximum equivalent stress at the corner of the connecting parts of the pillar and leg. In addition, the material and the weight was reduced by shape optimization for the chair model with 5 legs and maximum equivalent stress for stainless steel was found that greatly relaxed, compared with that of before shape optimization model.

Life cycle cost is one of important factors in the evaluation of economy feasibility. Load carrying capacity curves for girders and decks are derived on the basis of bridge diagnostic results and condition grade curves to determine the service life and life cycle profile. The total life cycle costs including initial cost, damage cost, maintenance cost, user cost, and etc for the service life are calculated for steel box girder, PSC-I girder and rationalized plate girder. The optimal designs are performed for various service lifes and different superstructure types. The effects of parameters on the life cycle cost are investigated and the economy feasibility is evaluated through the sensitivity analysis.

In this study steel box girders used as main members of a two span continuous steel bridge, are optimally designed by a Load and Resistance Factor Design method(LRFD) using an numerical optimization method. The width, height, web thickness and flange thickness of the main girder are set as design variables, and light weight design is attempted by choosing the cross-sectional area as an object function. We studied the results of steel box girders and compared with those of 1-type girders. The main program is coded with C++ and connected with optimization modul ADS. which is coded with FORTRAN.
The paper presents a Life-Cycle Cost-based optimization framework for wind-excited tall buildings equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs). The objective is to minimize the Life-Cycle Cost that comprises initial costs of the structure, the control system and costs related to repair, maintenance and downtime over the building's lifetime. The integrated optimization of structural sections and mass ratio of the TMDs is carried out, leading to a set of Pareto optimal solutions. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is that, differently from the traditional optimal design approach, it allows to perform the unified design of both the structure and the control system in a Life Cycle Cost Analysis framework. The procedure quantifies wind-induced losses, related to structural and nonstructural damage, considering the stochastic nature of the loads (wind velocity and direction), the specificity of the structural modeling (e.g., non-shear-type vibration modes and torsional effects) and the presence of the TMDs. Both serviceability and ultimate limit states related to the structure and the TMDs' damage are adopted for the computation of repair costs. The application to a case study tall building allows to demonstrate the efficiency of the procedure for the integrated design of the structure and the control system.
