In this study, the weight of the platen was reduced using the structural strength analysis and topology optimization design of the extruder by finite element analysis. The main components of the extruder such as the stem and billet, were modeled, and the maximum stress and safety factor were verified through structural strength analysis. Based on the results of the structural strength analysis, the optimal phase that satisfies the limitation given to the design area of the structure and maximizes or minimizes the objective function was obtained through a numerical method. The platen was redesigned with a phase-optimal shape, the weight was reduced by 40% (from the initial weight of 11.1 tons to 6.6 tons), and the maximum stress was 147.49 MPa safety factor of 1.86.
The fatigue-induced sequential failure of a structure having structural redundancy requires system-level analysis to account for stress redistribution. System reliability-based design optimization (SRBDO) for preventing fatigue-initiated structural failure is numerically costly owing to the inclusion of probabilistic constraints. This study incorporates the Branch-and-Bound method employing system reliability Bounds (termed the B3 method), a failure-path structural system reliability analysis approach, with a metaheuristic optimization algorithm, namely grey wolf optimization (GWO), to obtain the optimal design of structures under fatigue-induced system failure. To further improve the efficiency of this new optimization framework, an additional bounding rule is proposed in the context of SRBDO against fatigue using the B3 method. To demonstrate the proposed method, it is applied to complex problems, a multilayer Daniels system and a three-dimensional tripod jacket structure. The system failure probability of the optimal design is confirmed to be below the target threshold and verified using Monte Carlo simulation. At earlier stages of the optimization, a smaller number of limit-state function evaluation is required, which increases the efficiency. In addition, the proposed method can allocate limited materials throughout the structure optimally so that the optimally-designed structure has a relatively large number of failure paths with similar failure probability.
In this study, optimal distribution of springs which supports a cantilever beam is investigated to minimize two objective functions defined. The optimal size and location of the springs are ascertained to minimize the tip deflection of the cantilever beam. Afterwards, the optimization problem of springs is set up to minimize the tip absolute acceleration of the beam. The Fourier Transform is applied on the equation of motion and the response of the structure is defined in terms of transfer functions. By using any structural mode, the proposed method is applied to find optimal stiffness and location of springs which supports a cantilever beam. The stiffness coefficients of springs are chosen as the design variables. There is an active constraint on the sum of the stiffness coefficients and there are passive constraints on the upper and lower bounds of the stiffness coefficients. Optimality criteria are derived by using the Lagrange Multipliers. Gradient information required for solution of the optimization problem is analytically derived. Optimal designs obtained are compared with the uniform design in terms of frequency responses and time response. Numerical results show that the proposed method is considerably effective to determine optimal stiffness coefficients and locations of the springs.
The stochastic finite element method(SFEM) based structural optimal design is presented. Random system response including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with first order perturbation method. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the equilibrium equation and first-order perturbed equation. Numerical results are presented for a truss, frame and plate structures with displacement and stress constraints. The sensitivity calculation proposed here is compared with finite difference method. A nonlinear programming technique is used to solve the problem. The procedure is easily incorporated with existing deterministic structural optimization.
An application of the perturbation method to optimum structural design with random parameters is presented. It is formulated on the basis of the first-order stochastic finite element perturbation method. It also takes into full account the stress, displacement and eigenvalue constraints, together with the rates of change of the random variables. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients in regard to the governing equation and the first-order perturbed equation has been derived, by using a direct differentiation approach. A gradient-based nonlinear programming technique is used to solve the problem. The numerical results are specifically noted, where the stiffness parameter and external load are treated as random variables.
This study presents stiffness-based optimal design to control quantitatively lateral drift of frame-shear wall structures subject to seismic loads. To this end, lateral drift constraints are established by introducing approximation concept that preserves the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems. Also, the relationships of sectional properties are established to reduce the number of design variables and resizing technique of member is developed under the 'constant-shape' assumption. Specifically, the methodology of dynamic displacement sensitivity analysis is developed to formulate the approximated lateral displacement constraints. The 12 story frame-shear wall structural models is considered to illustrate the features of dynamic stiffness-based optimal design technique proposed in this study.
One of the most promising semi-active devices proposed for structural control is magnetorheological fluid (MR) dampers. While many researches are making too much of application to structural control, few of papers are considering how to design the MR dampers having good performance. In this paper, the sub-optimal design procedure for MR dampers is presented. This paper shows that an MR damper having the capacity of about 5,000 N is designed according to proposed procedure, as an exmple.
In this study, in order to develop an non-slip metal grating, the stability of the grating according to the span of the grating and the gap and height of the bearing bar was evaluated. The optimal shape design of the grating was performed using the results of determining the stability of the grating. The purpose of this study is to determine the stability according to the spacing and height of the bearing bar by applying the design pressure at the design stage to develop the anti-skid grating, and to design the optimal shape for cost reduction. In the optimal design, the target variable was set as the mass, and the optimal design of the grating was performed based on about 20%. Regardless of the height of the bearing bar of the grating, the stress and deformation of the span and the grating showed a proportional tendency to each other, and it was found that the stress decreased as the height of the bearing bar increased. Based on the structural analysis results, an optimal design was performed using mass as the objective variable, and the existing 2mm thickness was changed to 1.6mm, reducing the mass by about 19%. The stress increased by about 4.4% compared to the maximum stress of the existing grating, but the minimum safety factor was 3.1, indicating that the optimally designed grating was stable.
Optimality Criteria algorithm based on the derivation of reciprocal approximations has been applied to structural optimization of large-scale structures. However, required computational cost for the serial analysis algorithm of large-scale structures consisting of a large number of degrees of freedom and members is too high to be adopted in the solution process of O.C. algorithm Thus, parallel version of O.C. algorithm on the network of personal computers is presented in this Paper. Parallelism in O.C. algorithm may be classified into two regions such as analysis and optimizer part As the first step of development of parallel algorithm, parallel structural analysis algorithm is developed and used in O.C. algorithm The algorithm is applied to optimal design of a 54-story plane frame structure
