  • Drift design using resizing techniques can be a very practical method in drift design of high-rise buildings since it cannot require sensitivity analysis and structural re-analysis. Resizing techniques has used the cross sectional areas as design variable and supposed that displacement participation factors are inversely proportional to structural weights. Efficiency of resizing techniques based on displacement participation factors may depend on proper selection of sectional properties as design variables. In this study, two different drift design methods with the different sectional properties as design variables are presented and applied to a 20-story structure.

  • After the Kobe earthquake(1995) in Japan, the Izmit earthquake(1997) in Turkey and the Chi-chi earthquake(1999) in Taiwan, the small-to-medium-sized earthquakes occurred in the Koreans peninsula and this shows the fact that Korea is not located in the safety zone of earthquake. The main concept of base isolation system is to reduce the member forces by decreasing the earthquake forces transmitted to superstructure instead of the conventional techniques of strengthening the structural members. This study investigates the effect of seismic response attenuation of computer floors using base isolation systems

  • The drift and inter-story drift control method for steel structures subjected to seismic forces is formulated into a structural optimization problem in this paper. The formulated optimization problem with constraints on drift, inter-story drifts, and member strengthes are transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem. For the solution of the tranformed optimization problem an searching algorithm based on the gradient projection method utilizing gradient information on eigenvalues and eigenvectors are developed and presented in detail. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by application to drift control of a verifying example.

  • The structural methodology in designing a transmission tower have been performed to assume a simple truss behavior. But there're quite differences between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation for a structural stability can be expressed as a semi-rigid connection instead of the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural analysis modelling strategy for the transmission tower design. Proposed element models are truss element model, beam element model, and combined beam-truss element model. The static finite element analysis shows that there's a moment distribution between a mainpost member and the other bracing member.

  • The use of strut preloading method is gradually increasing in braced excavations in Korea. And it is necessary to analyse the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, bending moment and strut axial force etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils were peformed in strut preloading application. As results, about 50% of design strut load was effective as a preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of structures. And at least the effective stiffness of strut should be over 25% of the ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. In order to protect excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut was rather effective way than to increase the stiffness of strut and braced wall, but the excessive axial force of strut should be checked simultaneously.

And it is necessary to analyze the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, wall bending moment and strut axial force, etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, measured data and calculated results of 2 sites are compared and parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils are carried out in strut preloading application. As results, about 50%~75% of design strut load is effective as preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of earth retaining structures. And the effective stiffiness of strut should be at least 25% of th ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. As one of some methods to prevent excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut is confirmed as more effective way than to increase the stiffiness of strut in braced wall, if the excessive axial force of strut due to preloading can be avoided.

  • In this article, the force method and Charged System Search (CSS) algorithm are used for the analysis and optimal design of truss structures. The CSS algorithm is employed as the optimization tool and the force method is utilized for analysis. In this paper in addition to member's cross sections, redundant forces, geometry and topology variables are considered as the optimization variables. Minimum complementary energy principle is used directly to analyze the structure. In the presented method, redundant forces are calculated by the CSS in order to minimize the energy function. Combination of the CSS and force method leads to an efficient algorithm in comparison to some of the optimization algorithms.

  • The expediency of revising universal rules for the combination of gravity and lateral actions of wind force-resisting steel structures recommended by the Standards EN 1990 and ASCE/SEI 7-05 is discussed. Extreme wind forces, gravity actions and their combinations for the limit state design of structures are considered. The effect of statistical uncertainties of extreme wind pressure and steel yield strength on the structural safety of beam-column joints of wind force-resisting multistory steel frames designed by the partial factor design (PFD) and the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) methods is demonstrated. The limit state criterion and the performance process of steel frame joints are presented and considered. Their long-term survival probability analysis is based on the unsophisticated method of transformed conditional probabilities. A numerical example illustrates some discrepancies in international design standards and the necessity to revise the rule of universal combinations of loads in wind and structural engineering.

  • During the seismic performance assessment of existing buildings, staircases are generally not taken into account as structural members but as dead load. Staircases, as secondary structural members, not only serve for connecting successive floors but also provide considerable amount of strength and stiffness to the building which can modify its seismic behaviour considerably. In this parametric study, the influence of staircases on the seismic response of substandard RC frame buildings which differ in number of storey and span, presence of staircase and its position has been examined. Modal Analyses and bi-directional Non-Linear Time History Analyses (NLTHA) were conducted to compare several engineering demand parameters (EDPs) such as inter-storey drift ratio (ISDR), floor accelerations, modal properties, member shear forces and plastic hinge distribution. Additionally, short column effect, variation in shear forces of columns that are attached to the staircase slab, failure and deformation in staircase models have also been investigated. As the staircase was considered in the analytical model, a different damage pattern can be developed especially in the structural components close to staircase.
