  • The force (load) reduction factor, R, which is one of the most important parameters in earthquake load calculation, is independent of the dimensions of the structure but is defined on the basis of the load bearing system of the structure as defined in earthquake codes. Significant damages and failures were experienced on prefabricated reinforced concrete structures during the last three major earthquakes in Turkey (Adana 1998, Kocaeli 1999, Duzce 1999) and the experts are still discussing the main reasons of those failures. Most of them agreed that they resulted mainly from the earthquake force reduction factor, R that is incorrectly selected during design processes, in addition to all other detailing errors. Thus this wide spread damages caused by the earthquake to prefabricated structures aroused suspicion about the correctness of the R coefficient recommended in the current Turkish Earthquake Codes (TEC - 98). In this study, an attempt was made for an approximate determination of R coefficient for widely utilized prefabricated structure types (single-floor single-span) with variable dimensions. According to the selecting variable dimensions, 140 sample frames were computed using pushover analysis. The force reduction factor R was calculated by load-displacement curves obtained pushover analysis for each frame. Then, formulated artificial neural network method was trained by using 107 of the 140 sample frames. For the training various algorithms were used. The method was applied and used for the prediction of the R rest 33 frames with about 92% accuracy. The paper also aims at proposing the authorities to change the R coefficient values predicted in TEC - 98 for prefabricated concrete structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the present conditions of the pilotis spaces of the public apartment housing and to suggest the future planning means of the spaces. At the present time, most of the pilotis space has been constructed in wall-bearing method. However, post and beam method(or Rahmen) will be used due to the municipal public-housing policy. Observation of seven(7) different locations and twenty-eight(28) blocks, and interview with the residents were employed to gather the data. Regarding functional relevance, six types of the space were selected, and planning suggestions for each type were followed. Among others, the conclusions include: the pilotis space should be planned as an interior for the future, as well as it should be open enough to secure the view from the surroundings.

  • There are cofferdam and watertight wall to prevent of circulation or pollution during building of ocean structures like a dam and bridge in the harbors area and the sea. Inflow fluid and base of structure is important thing as one of the structural design factors for this interception wall like a cofferdam and watertight wall. In this study, it is revealed that at least 500 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics. The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical wall was investigated by using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system and Mean velocity distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field.

  • The structure of the Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle) Industry remains very weak and vulnerable to the WTO/IMF system. Considering that the majority of cattle farmers are small sized, and that marketing systems are outdated and inefficient, rapid expansion of lower priced beef imports by WTO system and rapid increasing of production costs by IMF system would lead to the deprivation of a regular source of farm income and threaten the stability of rural life. Accordingly, the Hanwoo industry should be expanded in accordance with progress in the implementation of (1) programs for the structural adjustment and (2) measures to compensate for the loss. Efforts for lowering major production factor costs needs to continue, In order to increase the supply of calves at low cost, the programs of collective cow-calf farms should be expanded, thereby reducing the cost of calf purchase, which constitutes the largest share of Hanwoo production cost. Also, feedlot operations should be encouraged for small herd farms in order to achieve a substantial saving in beef production costs by integrated operations from calf production to cattle fattening. A substantial saving would also be made by collective purchase and distribution of various inputs through the cooperatives' channels. Extension services should be strengthened for cattle farm management, cattle care and feeding, prevention of cattle disease, etc. In order to minimize cash outlays for commercial mixed feeds, utilization of far by-products as feeds should be enhanced and production of forage crops productive of resources, such as land and rural labor, during the farm o(f-season, needs to be encouraged. Also, technological development for enhancing the nutritional value of farm by-products should be encouraged. Measures for successful segregation of the Hanwoo beef market should be implemented, thereby enhancing incentive for quality beef producers and protecting consumers willing to pay higher price for quality beef. For development of the Hanwoo industry, a considerable time frame would be required in order for (1) small livestock farmers to make a successful adjustment by staying in the enterprise and achieving increased price efficiency (2) livestock farmers to acquire know-how for producing quality Hanwoo beef, (3) the ongoing Government policy of enhancing price-quality competitiveness, and for improving the quality Hanwoo beef marketing to take root. (4) consumers to increase their ability to distinguish meat quality, and others.

  • A Brevibacterium lactofermentum gene coding for a glucose-specific permease of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) was cloned, by complementing an Escherichia coli mutation affecting a ptsG gene with the B. lactofermentum genomic library, and completely sequenced. The gene was identified as a ptsG, which enables an E. coli transformant to transport non-metabolizable glucose analogue 2-deoxyglucose (2DG). The ptsG gene of B. lactofermentum consists of an open reading frame of 2,025 nucleotides encoding a polypeptide of 674 amino acid residues and a TAA stop codon. The 3' flanking region contains two stem-loop structures which may be involved in transcriptional termination. The deduced amino acid sequence of the B. lactofermentum enzyme $II^{GIe}$ specific to glucose ($EII^{GIe}$) has a high homology with the Corynebacterium glutamicum enzyme $II^{Man}$ specific to glucose and mannose ($EII^{Man}$), and the Brevibacterium ammoniagenes enzyme $II^{GIc}$ specific to glucose ($EII^{GIc}$). The 171-amino-acid C-terminal sequence of the $EII^{Glc}$ is also similar to the Escherichia coli enzyme $IIA^{GIc}$ specific to glucose ($IIA^{GIc}$). It is interesting that the arrangement of the structural domains, IIBCA, of the B. lactofermentum $EII^{GIc}$ protein is identical to that of EIIs specific to sucrose or $\beta$-glucoside. Several in vivo complementation studies indicated that the B. lactofermentum $EII^{Glc}$ protein could replace both $EII^{ Glc}$ and $EIIA^{Glc}$ in an E. coli ptsG mutant or crr mutant, respectively.

  • The HDD(hard disk drive) using Load/unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits which are increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance than those of contact-start-stop(CSS). It has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. The main objects of L/UL are no slider-disk contact or no media damage. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL system. In this paper, we focus on lift-off force. The 'lift-off' force, defined as the minimum air bearing force, is another very important indicator of unloading performance. A large amplitude of lift-off force increases the ramp force, the unloading time, the slider oscillation and contact-possibility. To minimize 'lift-off' force we optimizes the slider and suspension using the integrated optimization frame, which automatically integrates the analysis with the optimization and effectively implements the repetitive works between them. In particular, this study is carried out the optimal design considering the process of modes tracking through the entire optimization processes. As a result, we yield the equation which can easily find a lift-off force and structural optimization for suspension.

  • This study analyses the effects of household finances on rental price of apartment in Seoul which play a major role in real estate policy. We estimate VAR models using time series data. Economy variables such as sales price of apartment in Seoul, consumer price index, hiring rate, real GNI and loan amount of housing mortgage, which relate to household finances and influence the rental price of apartment, are used for estimation. The main findings are as follows. In the short term, the rental price of apartment is impacted by economy variables. Specifically, Relative contributions of variation in rental price of apartment through structural shock of economy variables are most influenced by their own. However, in the long term, household variables are more influential to the rental price of apartment. These results are expected to contribute to establish housing price stabilization policies through understanding the relationship between economy variables and rental price of apartment.

  • The study uses the crossed wide girder(waffle slab type) in apartment structural system comparing with existing shear wall system. The crossed wide girder will be able to secure the span of the longest which is possible with minimum slab thickness by not increasing the height. The research sees continuity arranges the crossed wide girder in schedule interval following the stress distribution. Namely, it is to make the interior space with the space without column and wall in the minimum height. In order to check the numerical value of this study which it interpreted the ductile frame system due to the crossed wide girder and existing shear wall system used the Midas Gen is a program which 3-dimension laterial force designs are possible. Analysis results, the crossed wide girder system is not disadvantageously laterial drift, drift ratio and deflection of slab compares with existing shear wall system. Also the whole concrete amount is similar existing shear wall system. The crossed wide girder is advantage which secure a architectal variability.

  • Because of effective fruit growing and management in the slope land, the use of orchard vehicle with lifting utilities has been increased. For this reason the study on the stability of that vehicle for worker's safety is needed. This study is investigated on the stability estimation of orchard vehicle with four wheels and dual rectangular-type lifting utilities which can be moved on the dirt sloping load. Through the multi-body dynamics analysis on the vehicle mechanism, overturning angles of 19.2 and $34.6^{\circ}$ in the right-left and front-rear direction can be calculated. It is determined tractive resistances and required powers of the wheels. And through the finite element analysis on the frame of lifting utility its maximum von-Mises stress is 146 MPa and it is structural stable. Therefore it is known that the orchard vehicle with wheels and lifting utilities has static and dynamic stability.

  • In this study the inelastic behavior of the existing school buildings with infilled masonry walls is analysed by pushover method. The shear stiffness and strength of masonry wall is calculated from the prior experimets and verified by inelastic analysis. The height of infilled masonry wall affects the structural behavior. The higher the masonry wall height, the higher the initial shear stiffness and strength of masonry wall. As the cracks are developed, the strength of masonry wall is much decreased. The proposed inelastic analysis method shows similar results with the experiments and can be used as inelastic analysis model of reinforced concrete buildings with infilled masonry walls.
