  • The design process of RC Slab includes multiple procedures such as structural analysis, member design, the production of calculation sheets, CAD, and itemized statements of quantities. The objective of this study is to develope an integrated design system that includes all the steps needed for RC Slab design, and as a result, to improve the quality and efficiency of the design process. In this study, the design steps are divided into structural modules and database, and each module and database is systematically combined for the complete design process. The developed design system is based on Web environment. Therefore it can be used in real time and reduces the design work time and space.

  • This paper deals with the design process of the footbridge over the branch between Singil and Yoido. For the design of a resonable and beautiful footbridge, it is required to consider technical methods and artistic geometry. The design approach to this footbridge is related with both the field of science and art, therefore from starting the process is made in cooperation with engineers and architects. It results in not only reasonable but economical structural master piece to close the gap between a technology-oriented tendency and a artistic inclination toward structural design.

Optimum design of cable-stayed bridges

  • This paper presents a procedure to minimize the cost of materials of cable-stayed bridges with composite box girder and concrete tower. Two sets of iterations are included in the proposed procedure. The first set of iteration performs the structural analysis for a cable-stayed bridge. The second set of iteration performs the optimization process. The design is formulated as a general mathematical problem with the cost of the bridge as the objective function and bending forces, shear forces, fatigue stresses, buckling and deflection as constraints. The constraints are developed based on the Canadian National Standard CAN/CSA-S6-88. The finite element method is employed to perform the complicated nonlinear structural analysis of the cable-stayed bridges. The internal penalty function method is used in the optimization process. The limit states design method is used to determine the load capacity of the bridge. A computer program written in FORTRAN 77 is developed and its validity is verified by several practical-sized designs.

  • Performance has been developed in terms of structural strength. Especially, in a structural steels, it is regarded as a common design process that an yield stress of thicker plate than 40mm uses that of below 40mm in thickness. This can be done using TMCP(Thermo mechanical control process). In this study, the structural stabilities such as deflection, maximum load carrying capacity would be calculated in high temperatures.

  • Main starting valve is one of the main parts in the control system of diesel engines, purposed for starting main engines. It is composed of ball valve, check valve, actuator, etc. The design axioms provide a general framework for design methodology. Two axioms are independence axiom and information axiom. These axioms can be applied to all design process in a general way. The first axiom is introduced to analyze and evaluate the design of a main starting valve. The design parameters(DPS) are determined sequentially by considering the independence axiom. For the structural design of a main starting valve, the strength is calculated by using finite element method. In addition, the strength of its actuator piston is evaluated.

  • Weight reduction for an automobile body is being sought for the fuel efficiency and the energy conservation. One way of the efforts is adopting Ultra Light Steel Auto Body (ULSAB) concept. The ULSAB concept can be used for the light weight of an automobile door with the tailor welded blank (TWB). A design process is defined for the TWB. The inner panel of door is designed by the TWB and optimization. The design starts from an existing component. At first, the hinge and inner reinforcements are removed. In the conceptual design stage, topology optimization is conducted to find the distribution of variable thicknesses. The number of parts and the welding lines are determined from the topology design. In the detailed design process, size optimization is carried out to find thickness while stiffness constraints are satisfied. The final parting lines are determined by shape optimization.

  • Two phase simulated annealing algorithm is presented as a structural optimization technique and applied to minimum weight design of space trusses subjected to stress and displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. Univariate searching algorithm is adopted for automatic selection of initial values of design variables for SA algorithm. The proper values of cooling factors and reasonable stopping criteria for optimum design of space truss structures are proposed to enhance the performance of optimization process. Optimum weights and design solutions are presented for two well-blown example structures and compared with those reported in the literature.

  • This paper provides readers with an attempt In applying expert systems to structural engineering. As a demonstrative domain to provide the pontentiality of expert system foundation design is presented. Foundation design can have less formalized phage in the overall design process, particularly during preliminary design. It depends on several factors: the function of the structure and the loads it must carry the subsurface conditions, and the cost of foundation, The expert system in the paper is to be used for determining the type of foundation.

  • This paper deals with design processing for in a east- north Seoul. The pedestrian cross over main street through Seoul and Uijongbu.   • This study is interested in how philological interpretation of a space text were patterned so as to give the text structural cohesion. A similar philological motivation incorporates some of the notions of generative grammar. Interpretation is the process of recovering the cultural meanings expressed in discourse by analysing the linguistic structures in the light of their interactional and wider social contexts. Viewed in this light, the process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this research contains basic concepts of signification of text and context, and theories of spacial text and context of typological structure in terms of Ricoeur's structural Hermeneutics. Secondly, it concretize a logic that traditional space context is inserted in organized attribute like emotion, spirit, nature as character of contemporary space text through typological structure. Finally, from aspect of designation theory among interpretive semantics, it shows that korean contemporary space design is incorporated with typological structure of korean traditional palace spacial context homologically through the case study of I-Hotel space design. Through this process, this study suggest that positivistic interpretation methodology by designation of text is logical thinking of Korean traditional space design.
