  • This paper presents the safety and strength of simplified composite H-beam panel bridges (SCHPBs) using 3-dimentional finite-element program, ABAQUS (2007) and experimental tests. Two finite-element models (one-steel-girder-and-composite-deck model and four-steel-girder-and-wide-composite-deck model) were reviewed to predict the strength and load distribution factor (LDF) values of the composite bridges. Based on the results of the finite-element analyses, the behaviors of the two models were investigated, and deflection and strain gauges for the experimental specimens were set up to obtain the ultimate strengths and the LDF values. The ultimate strength of the one-steel-girder-and-composite-deck specimen was estimated to be 840 kN. The yield and plastic moments of the four-steel-girder-and-wide-composite-deck specimen were obtained to be 2.4 and 4.1 times the design moment based on the live loading condition of the Korea Bridge Design Specifications (2005). The SCHPB were found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

  • In order to make reliable earthquake-resistant design of civil engineering structures, one of the most important considerations in a region with high seismicity is to pay attention to the local soil condition of regions. It is aimed in the current study at specifying dynamic soil characteristics of Kirikkale city center conducting the 1-D equivalent linear and non-linear site response analyses. Due to high vulnerability and seismicity of the city center of Kirikkale surrounded by active many faults, such as the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), the city of Kirikkale is classified as highly earthquake-prone city. The first effort to determine critical site response parameter is to perform the seismic hazard analyses of the region through the earthquake record catalogues. The moment magnitude of the city center is obtained as $M_w=7.0$ according to the recorded probability of exceedance of 10% in the last 50 years. Using the data from site tests, the 1-D equivalent linear (EL) and nonlinear site response analyses (NL) are performed with respect to the shear modulus reduction and damping ratio models proposed in literature. The important engineering parameters of the amplification ratio, predominant site period, peak ground acceleration (PGA) and spectral acceleration values are predicted. Except for the periods between the period of T=0.2-1.0 s, the results from the NL are obtained to be similar to the EL results. Lower spectral acceleration values are estimated in the locations of the city where the higher amplification ratio is attained or vice-versa. Construction of high-rise buildings with modal periods higher than T=1.0 s are obtained to be suitable for the city of Kirikkale. The buildings at the city center are recommended to be assessed with street survey rapid structural evaluation methods so as to mitigate seismic damages. The obtained contour maps in this study are estimated to be effective for visually characterizing the city in terms of the considered parameters.

  • Circular concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) are composite members, which consists of a steel tube and concrete infill. CFTs have been used as building columns and bridge piers due to several advantages such as their strength-to-size efficiency and facilitation of rapid construction. Extensive experimental studies about CFT have been conducted for past decades. However experimental results alone are not sufficient to support the engineering of these components. Complementary advanced numerical models are needed to simulate the behavior of CFT to extend the experimental research and develop predictive tools required for design and evaluation of structural systems. In this study, a finite element modeling technique for CFT was developed. The confinement effects, and behavior of CFT subjected various types of loading predicted by the proposed finite element model for CFT were verified by comparing with test results.

  • To carry out this study efficiently, the material, physical and mechanical properties of the existing high temperature area was identified and the thermal transportation of structural elements was carried out through the finite element analysis method(ABAQUS) for 40 to 100 MPa high strength concrete based on Fiber Cocktail mixing. The results are as follows. First, it was analyzed that 40, 50 and 60 MPa high strength concretes have a thermal transportation properties similar to the analysis model of 30 MPa normal concrete. Second, it was analyzed that the analysis model of 80 and 100 MPa high strength concrete have slightly lower thermal transportation properties compared to normal model. Third, this study didn't consider the explosive spalling by the pore pressure within high strength concrete. If the properties for the pore pressure within high strength concrete is considered and database by strength and by inner temperature of various high strength concrete and steel materials are established in the future, it is interpreted that the technical foundation will be laid for performance-based design of fire-resistant construction.

  • According to the seismic design criteria for structural buildings in Korea, the ground is classified into 5 types based on the average shear wave velocity measured from elastic wave tests on site and seismic load applied to the structure is estimated. However, elastic wave tests in site, however, on the engineering fill, cannot be performed during the construction period. Therefore, to evaluate shear wave velocity considering field conditions, resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests are performed and compared with various elastic wave test results. As a result, if confining pressure for the tests using engineering fill are considered properly, we can obtain similar results comparing with those of elastic wave tests. In addition, by considering the effect of maximum shear modulus and confining pressure by RC/TS tests, n values shows typical values ranging from 0.434 to 0.561 so that utilization of RC/TS tests can be useful to infer shear modulus in field.

  • As an alternative to current conventional force-based assessment methods, the energy-based seismic performance of a code-designed 20-storey high-rise steel building is evaluated in this paper. Using 3D nonlinear dynamic time-history method with consideration of additional material damping effect, the influences of different restoring force models and P-${\Delta}/{\delta}$ effects on energy components are investigated. By combining equivalent viscous damping and hysteretic damping ratios of the structure subjected to strong ground motions, a new damping model, which is amplitude-dependent, is discussed in detail. According to the analytical results, all energy components are affected to various extents by P-${\Delta}/{\delta}$ effects and a difference of less than 10% is observed; the energy values of the structure without consideration of P-${\Delta}/{\delta}$ effects are larger, while the restoring force models have a minor effect on seismic input energy with a difference of less than 5%, but they have a certain effect on both viscous damping energy and hysteretic energy with a difference of about 5~15%. The paper shows that the use of the hysteretic energy at its ultimate state as a seismic design parameter has more advantages than seismic input energy since it presents a more stable value. The total damping ratio of a structure consists of viscous damping ratio and hysteretic damping ratio and it is found that the equivalent viscous damping ratio is a constant for the structure, while the equivalent hysteretic damping ratio approximately increases linearly with structural response in elasto-plastic stage.

  • Performance analyses of vertical breakwaters were conducted for fictitiously designed breakwaters for various water depths to analyze the influence of climate change on the structures. The performance-based design method considering sea level rise and wave height increase due to climate change was used for the performance analysis. One of the problems of the performance-based design method is the large calculation time of wave transformation. To overcome this problem, the SWAN model combined with artificial neural network was used. The significant wave height and principal wave direction at the breakwater site are quickly calculated by using a trained neural network with inputs of deepwater significant wave height and principal wave direction, and tidal level. In general, structural stability becomes low due to climate change impacts, but the trend of stability is different depending on water depth. Outside surf zone, the influence of wave height increase becomes more significant, while that of sea level rise becomes negligible, as water depth increases. Inside surf zone, the influence of both wave height increase and sea level rise diminishes as water depth decreases, but the influence of wave height increase is greater than that of sea level rise. Reinforcement and maintenance policies for vertical breakwaters should be established with consideration of these results.

  • Urban excavation requires highly reliable prediction technique for the design and construction of earth retaining structure in order to protect adjacent structures around deep excavation. Application of the pre-loading of bracing for deep excavation has been reported, and the known beneficial effects are not fully understood and recognized by many practitioners. Model tests have been carried out to evaluate the efficiency of pre-loading system in reducing ground settlement as well as prediction of structural damage around excavation in sand. The test results revealed that the applied pre-loading of 50% and 70% showed about 20% of reduction in horizontal wall displacement and 30∼40% reduction in ground settlement. Also, bracing forces and earth pressure distribution behind the wall have been monitored during pre-loading at various excavation stages.

  • The latest technical development of steel plate girder railway bridge are developing in ways to maximize its durability of materials in use of high strength steel and efficiency of maintenance and management by the introduction of simplified and standardization ideas. In addition to this, it is also expected to reduce the cost of bridge construction and to simplify the process of bridge manufacturing. Referring to this, composite few plate girder railway bridge is highly recommendable that is very economical with the fine exterior. In this paper, it will analyse the variation of dynamic behavior of existing composite few plate girder railway bridge with ballast caused by modified Slab Track through interpretation of limited enzyme in order to obtain the existing data for improvement of Slab Track system from Ballast Track system. Consequently, it can help maximize economic efficiency and structural capability. As a results, although the natural frequency by modified Slab Track are decreased, it is hardly influencing on the safety of railway bridges. It is also evident in the case of slab deck with a reduced scale in comparison with Ballast Track. Therefore, it is expected to reduce the cost of a railway bridge plan. And, it can expect the synergistic effect of the ensure long term durability of bridge caused by decreased stresses of bottom flange due to reduced dead load. As a result, the analytical study are carried out to investigate the composite few plate girder railway bridge could be the optimal design method for the dynamic safety of a girder section.
