  • Four design codes/regulations for steel structures in Japan are briefly reviewed. Some of them employ the limit state design concept while the others are still based on the allowable stress design concept. The process for revision is now in action. The directions in the development of structural design codes are also reported herein. It is noted that a current trend in this development is to employ the performance-based design concept that has been successfully implemented in some seismic design codes.

  • This study examined the effects of parent-, peer-, and teacher-attachment on development of career maturity via the mediating effects of self concept. There were 2844 elementary school students, ages 12 to 13 years old, who participated in the Korean Youth Panel Survey. All data were used for the analyses. Gender differences were found in most of the variables, including attachment, self concept, and career maturity. The Structural Equation Modeling technique applied to the data revealed that there were both concurrent and lagged effects of attachment and self concept on career maturity. It was found that self concept played a mediating role on career maturity.

  • The core of the semantic web is ontology, which supports interoperability among semantic web applications and enables developer to reuse and share domain knowledge. It used a variety of fields such as Information Retrieval, E-commerce, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Bio-informatics. However, the reality is that various errors might be included in conceptual hierarchy when developing ontologies. Therefore, methodologies and supporting tools are essential to help the developer construct suitable ontologies for the given purposes and to detect and analyze errors in order to verify the inconsistency in the ontologies. In this paper we propose a new approach for ontology error detection based on the Concept Lattices of Formal Concept Analysis. By using the tool that we developed in this research, we can extract core elements from the source code of Ontology and then detect some structural errors based on the concept lattices. The results of this research can be helpful for ontology engineers to support error detection and construction of "well-defined" and "good" ontologies.

  • Cable-stayed structures provide a lot of possibilities toward the development of innovative structural forms regarding their expressiveness and uniqueness. Such cable-stayed structures, as form-active structures, can obtain a family of alternatives by changing parameters for defining geometric shapes. The concept of graphic statics is utilized to explain the relationship between the load path and structural forms because the load path of cable structures has something to do with their structural geometry. Moreover, this structural geometry has a dominant effect on both structural efficiency and structural elegancy. The proposed design method in this study will help designers conceive innovative structural forms considering structural safety, material efficiency, and structural art altogether.

  • The concept of ideals has played an important role as an inception of the structural approach to algebra. As a sequel to [51], we first deal with the gradual emergence of tile abstract concepts of fields and rings, and study the history of ideals initiated fly Dedekind and then formalized by Noether for the structural research.

  • A concept of multi-layered database is proposed for the integrated operation of bridge information in this study. The multi-layered database is a logically integrated database composed of standardized information layers. The standardized information layers represent the data sets that can be unified, and they are defined by standardized information models. Classification system of bridge component was used as a basis of the multi-layered database, and code system based on the classification system was employed as a key integrator to manipulate the distributed data located on the different information layers. In addition, data level indicating priorities of information layers was defined to support strategic planning of the multi-layered database construction. As a proof of concept, a prototype of multi-layered database for object-oriented 3-D shape information and structural calculation document was built. Data consistency check of the semantically same data in the two different information layer was demonstrated, It is expected that the proposed concept can assure the integrity and consistency of information in the bridge information management.

  • This paper provides the results for experimental study on longitudinal shear performance for new-concept composite slabs embedded with silence insulator. Longitudinal shear capacity tests are used to predict characteristics of composite action between the concrete block, silence insulator and deckplate. A total set of 7 Push-Down specimens are tested to clarify the composite action between the concrete block, silence insulator and deckplate. Parameters in this study are the width of T-type bar, the depth of reinforced bar and the thickness of silence insulator. The results from experimental study on longitudinal shear capacity for new-concept composite slabs applied T-type bar, Reinforced bar and Silence insulator are summarized as follows. In test result, the Longitudinal Shear Capacity of the new concept specimen is 2 times excellent than basic specimen with safety. It is expected that applying the proposed composite slab detail at the actual site will provide a significant safety factor in structural aspect of the existing composite slab, and greatly contribute to the improvement capacities of resisting vibration and sound.

  • Structual ambiguity is one of those problem that arise in the analysis of natural language sentences. It has been considered very difficult to solve the problem.Structural ambiguity, however, should be resolved no matter how difficult it may be.Otherwise natural language processing could be virtually impossible.A statistical approach to structural disambiguation is proposed in this dissertation. The information-theoretic concept of mutual information has been empolyed in resolving structural ambiguity Mutual information can be acquired in an automatic way.from text corpora. If a structural disambiguation subsystem had the capability of self-evaluating whether the results of structural disambiguation are correct or not.it would be possible to develop a more intelligent natural language proessing system. In this paper, the concept of confidence measure is also proposed to endow the disambiguation subsystem with such intelligence.Confidence measure is a numeric value calculated after structural disambiguation. Some experiments were performed in order to show the validity of the approach.Mutual information was auto matically acquired from a corpus of 1.6milion words that were collected from scientific abstracts. The accuracy of structural disambiguation was 80%when performed over 1,639 test sentences.Notice that there was no manual tuning in advance for the experiments. The task of detecting and correcting errors in structural disambiguation will be performed very effectively if the concept of confidence measure is employed in the process.

  • The concept of homology design has been devised for the application to large telescope structure by S.v.Hoerner. It is defined that the deformation of a structure shall be called homologous, if a given geometrical relation holds, for a given number of structural points, before, during, and after the deformation. Recently, the need of homology design in the structural design has been increase due to the required precision in the structure. Some researchers have utilized the theory on the structural design with finite element method in the late 1980s In the present investigation, a simple method using geometrical equality constraints is suggested to gain homologous deformation. The previous method is improved in that the decomposition of FEM eqation, which is very expensive, is not necessary. The basic formulations of the homology design with the optimization concept are described and several practical examples are solved to verify the usefulness and validity. Especially, a back-up structure of a satellite antenna is designed by the suggested method. The results are compared with those of existing researches.

  • The structural efficiency of tall buildings heavily depends on the lateral stiffness and resistance capacity. Among those structural systems for tall buildings, outrigger system is one of the most common and efficient systems especially for those with relatively regular floor plan. The use of outriggers in building structures can be traced back from early 50 from the concept of deep beams. With the rise of building height, deep beams become concrete walls or now in a form of at least one story high steel truss type of outriggers. Because of the widened choice in material to be adopted in outriggers, the form and even the objective of using outrigger system is also changing. In the past, outrigger systems is only used to provide additional stiffness to reduce drift and deflection. New applications for outrigger systems now move to provide additional damping to reduce wind load and acceleration, and also could be used as structural fuse to protect the building under a severe earthquake condition. Besides analysis and member design, construction issue of outrigger systems is somehow cannot be separated. Axial shortening effect between core and perimeter structure is unavoidable. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on the outrigger system in tall buildings including development history and applications of outrigger systems in tall buildings. The concept of outrigger system, optimum topology, and design and construction consideration will also be discussed and presented.
