Strontium (Sr) commonly exists in rock, groundwater, soil, plants, and animals. The Sr isotope ratio offers important information as a tracer on nature because the Sr isotopic composition is not fractionated by any biological process in these ecosystems. Hence, Sr isotope ratio has been used in several studies on tracing the Sr source for contaminated sites and human migration. In this study, we developed a separation method for Sr content, and then improved Sr isotope analysis using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). A powdered rock standard (NIST 2710a) was used to determine the removal of interference elements (Rb and Ca) and the recovery rate of Sr content. The results ranged from 98% to 106%. Additionally, three standard samples (NBS 987, IAPSO and NIST 1486) were analyzed to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the results. The measured $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio for all the samples were consistent with the reported values, within an error. These results indicate that our established Sr separation and Sr isotope measurement methods are reliable and can hence be useful in the fields of environmental and forensic sciences.
Zeolite (FZ) prepared using coal fly ash from an Ulsan industrial complex was immobilized with polysulfone (PS) to fabricate PS-FZ beads. The prepared PS-FZ beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum ratio for preparing PS-FZ beads was 1 g of PS to 2 g of FZ. The removal efficiencies of Sr and Cu ions by the PS-FZ beads increased as the solution pH increased and nearly reached a plateau at pH 4. A pseudo-second-order model morel fit the adsorption kinetics of both ions by the PS-FZ beads better than a pseudo-first-order model. The Langmuir isotherm model fit the equilibrium data well. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model were 46.73 mg/g and 62.54 mg/g for the Sr and Cu ions, respectively. Additionally, the values of thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) were determined. The results implied that the prepared PS-FZ beads could be interesting an alternative material for Sr and Cu ion removal.
This study evaluates the adsorption properties of Sr ions in an aqueous solution of the synthetic zeolite (Z-Y1) prepared using coal fly ash generated from a thermal power plant. In order to investigate the adsorption characteristics, the effects of various parameters such as the initial concentrations of Sr ion, contact time, and solution pH were investigated in a batch mode. The Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson model fitted the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Sr ions, as determined the Langmuir model, was 181.68 mg/g. It was found that by varying the Sr ion concentration, pH, and temperature, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model describes the adsorption kinetics of the Sr ion better than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters of ${\Delta}H^0$ and ${\Delta}G^0$ showed that the adsorption of Sr ions on Z-Y1 was occurred through a spontaneous and an endothermic reaction. We found that the adsorption of Sr ions by Z-Y1 was more affected by pH than by temperature and Sr ion concentration.

A study on the electrosorption of $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions onto a porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was performed to treat radioactive liquid wastes resulting from chemical or electrochemical decontamination and to regenerate the spent carbon electrode. The result of batch electrosorption experiments showed that applied negative potential increased adsorption kinetics and capacity in comparison with open-circuit potential (OCP) adsorption for $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions. The adsorbed $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions are released from the carbon fiber by applying a positive potential on the electrode, showing the reversibility of the sorption process. The possibility of application of the electrosorption technique to the separation of radionuclides was examined. The result of a selective removal experiments of a single component from a mixed solution showed that perfect separation of $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions was possible by the electrosorption process.
Zeolite was synthesized from power station waste, coal fly ash, as an alternative low-cost adsorbent and investigated for the removal of Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions from single- and binary metal aqueous solutions. In order to investigate the adsorption characteristics, the effects of various operating parameters such as initial concentration of metal ions, contact time, and pH of the solutions were studied in a batch adsorption technique. The Langmuir model better fitted the adsorption isotherm data than the Freundlich model. The pseudo second-order model was found more applicable to describe the kinetics of system. The adsorption capacities of Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions obtained from the Langmuir model were 1.7848 mmol/g and 0.7640 mmol/g, respectively. Although the adsorption capacities of individual Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions was less in the binary-system, the sum of the total adsorption capacity (2.3572 mmol/g) of both ions in the binary-system was higher than the adsorption capacity of individual ion in the single-system. Comparing the homogeneous film diffusion model with the homogeneous particle diffusion model, the adsorption was mainly controlled by the particle diffusion process.

Serving as an excellent adsorbent and inorganic ion exchanger in the water purification field, zeolite 4A has in this work presented a strong capability for purifying radioactive waste, such as $Sr^{2+}$, $Cs^+$, and $Co^{2+}$ in water. During the processes of decontamination and decommissioning of suspended solids and organics in low-level radioactive wastewater, the purification performance of zeolite 4A has been studied. Under ambient temperature and neutral condition, zeolite 4A absorbed simulated radionuclides such as $Sr^{2+}$, $Cs^+$, and $Co^{2+}$ with an absorption rate of almost 90%. Additionally, in alkaline condition, the adsorption percentage even approached 98.7%. After conducting research on suspended solids and organics of zeolite 4A for the treatment of radionuclides, it was found that the suspended clay was conducive to absorption, whereas the absorption of organics in solution was determined by the species of radionuclides and organics. Therefore, zeolite 4A has considerable potential in the treatment of radioactive wastewater.
In this study, PAN-SZ (polyacrylonitrile scoria zeolite) beads were prepared by immobilizing Na-A zeolite (SZ-A) synthesized from Jeju volcanic rocks (scoria) on the polymer PAN. FT-IR and TGA analysis results confirmed that the SZ-A was immobilized in the PAN-SZ beads. SEM images showed that the PAN-SZ beads are a spherical shape with 2 mm diameter and exhibit a porous inner structure inside the bead. The most suitable mixing ratio of PAN to SZ-A as the adsorbent for removing Sr ions was PAN/SZ-A = 0.2 g/0.3 g. The adsorption kinetic data for Cu and Sr ions were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The Cu and Sr ion uptakes followed a Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities at $20^{\circ}C$ were 84.03 mg/g and 75.19 mg/g, respectively. The amount of Sr ion adsorbed by SZ-A on the PAN-SZ beads was about 160 mg/g, which was similar to that adsorbed by SZ-A powder. Thus, the PAN-SZ beads prepared in this study are considered to be effective adsorbents for removing metal ions in aqueous solutions.

Chitosan, a natural nontoxic chelator, was reported to reduce whole body retention of radiostrontium in mice. As calcium has a simillar chemical properties to strontium both of which be easily bound with hydroxyapatite structure, calcium can be either a competitor or enhancer to chitosan on the removal of radiostrontium. We compared the effect of chitosan and calcium on the excretion of ingested radiostrontium ($^{85}$Sr). Chitosan or calcium($Cacl_2$) and usual food was mixed as 1:99 by weight. The mixed food to chitosan (group 1) or calcium (group 2) were given orally for 30 days before $^{85}$Sr administration. In other groups, mixed calcium and chitosan solution (group 3), 1% calcium (group 4), or 1% chitosan solution (group 5) was given for 7 days immediately after oral administration of $^{85}SrC1_2$ ($0.25{\mu}Ci$). In control group, no chitosan or calcium were given. Either chitosan or calcium was effective on the removal of $^{85}Sr$ from mouse body(Table. 1). Addition of calcium on chitosan did not improve or deteriorate the effect of chitosan on the removal of $^{85}Sr$ from mouse body. In conclusion, calcium was similarly effective on the removal of $^{85}Sr$ from mouse body.

This study investigated removal of radionuclides (Cs, Sr) in surface water by coagulation and precipitation. Jar tests were conducted with various chemical and natural coagulants to remove the stabilized radionuclides ($^{133}Cs$, $^{88}Sr$). Chemical coagulants included aluminum sulfate, poly aluminum chloride, and poly aluminum hydroxide chloride silicate (PACS); natural coagulants (minerals) included illite and zeolite. Chemical coagulant alone could achieve removals of Cs and Sr less than 10%; The removals increased up to 23.1% for Cs and 17.8% for Sr with addition of poly-dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) along with the chemical coagulants. Compared with chemical coagulants, natural coagulants (minerals) could achieve higher removals of Cs and Sr. Addition of zeolite along with PACS and polyDADMAC increased the removal rates up to 36.9% for Cs and 17.1% for Sr.

In order to remove Sr ions and Cs ions from aqueous solution, PS-zeolite beads were prepared by immobilizing zeolite with polysulfone (PS). The prepared PS-zeolite beads were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and TGA. The optimum condition to prepare PS-zeolite beads was 1.25 g of PS content and 2 g of zeolite A. The removal efficiencies of Sr and Cs ions by the PS-zeolite beads increased as the solution pH increases and nearly reached a plateau at pH 4. The PS-zeolite beads prepared in this study showed a remarkably high selectivity for Sr ion and Cs ion under the coexistence of ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$. Zeolite particles detached from the PS-zeolite beads were not observed on this experiments, and also the PS-zeolite beads maintained the morphological structure on a SEM image. The removal efficiencies of Sr ions and Cs ions by PS-zeolite beads were maintained over 90% even after five adsorption-desorption cycles. These results implied that the prepared PS-zeolite beads could be an available adsorbent for the adsorption of Sr and Cs ions. These results suggest that the PS-zeolite can potentially be used as an adsorbent in radioactive ions removal for the treatment of industrial wastewater.
