  • Daejowhan-gamibang(DJG) is used to prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, dementia, hyperlipdemia circulatory disturbance. Korean traditional herbal prescriptions and herb medicines in neuronal cells, which have been used for the treatment of stroke and brain diseases in Korean traditional medicine were screened to study the antioxidant effects and its mechanism. Daejowhan-gamibang water extract(DJGWE) was tested on their antioxidant activity using radical scavenging effects against ABTS. It showed significant antioxidant capacities at 50㎍ concentration. The antioxidant activity of DJGWE was determined in the different concentration (10㎍, 50 ㎍, and 100㎍). At the same time, the antiperoxidation effects was determined. Lipid peroxidation in brain homogenates induced by NADPH and ADP-Fe/sup 2+/ was significantly inhibited by DJGWE in vitro. DJGWE showed a potent antioxidant and antiperoxidative activity, further investigation, in vitro and in vivo, will be needed for the confirm of possibility as an antioxidant therapeutic agents and their optimal treatment of brain diseases in human. In searching the mechanism of antioxidant effects of DJGWE, it showed the inhibition of activity of JNK, p38, ERK and caspase 3 induced by hypoxia. So, DJGWE should be surveyed for the use of the potential therapeutic prescription for stroke and brain degenerative diseases such as pakinson's disease, dementia.

  • Environmental protection on the ocean has been interested and nowadays the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has advanced on the prevention of air pollution from ships. This study presents the emission characteristics of 4 stroke marine diesel engines in E3 cycle (propulsion application) and D2 cycle (generation application). Also the effects of important operating parameters in terms of intake air pressure and temperature, and maximum combustion pressure on the specific emissions are described. Emissions measurement and calculation are processed according to IMO Technical Code. The results show that NOx emission level in E3 cycle is higher than that in D2 cycle due to lower engine speed at low load and the maximum combustion pressure by fuel injection timing control and intake air temperature has strong influence on NOx emission production. And CO, HC emissions are not affected by maximum combustion pressure and intake air pressure and temperature.

  • Environmental protection on the ocean has been interested and nowadays the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has advanced on the prevention of air pollution from ships. This study presents the emission characteristics of 4 stroke propulsion diesel engine in E2 cycle (constant speed) and E3 cycle (propeller curved speed). Also the effects of important operating parameters in terms of intake air pressure and temperature, and maximum combustion pressure are described on the specific emissions. Emissions measurement and calculation are processed according to IMO Technical Code. The results show that NOx emission level in E3 cycle is higher than E2 cycle due to lower engine speed and lower maximum combustion pressure by retarding fuel injection timing. Intake air temperature has strong influence on NOx emission production. And CO, HC emissions are not affected by maximum combustion pressure and intake air pressure and temperature.

  • The possibility of Chungpesagan-tang, which has been recommended on the stroke patients with constipation in Korean traditional clinic, and its ingredients as a novel antithrombotic agent was evaluated. Most of its ingredients except Puerariae Radix exhibited in vitro antiplatelet aggregation activity. However, Puerariae Radix was significantly effective on ex vivo anti-platelet aggregation activity, whereas Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix, Raphani Semen and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix was not effective. Plasma recalcification was potently inhibited only by Puerariae Radix and Rhei Rhizoma treated with intestinal bacteria. Urokinase was also activated only by Chungpesagan-tang, Angelicae Tenuissimae Radix and Puerariae Radix treated with intestinal bacteria. Chungpesagan-tang exhibited the potent anti-thromboembolic activity activity in vitro. These results suggest that anti-thrombotic activity of Chungpesagan-tang should be activated by intestinal bacteria and may be important in the prevention of thrombosis and cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infraction stroke and arteriosclerosis.

  • Objective: This study conducted in order to investigate the correlations between fall experience, balance, mobility, and confidence. We examined the difference between fall experience, and Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed-Up-and-Go test (TUG), Tinetti balance assessment (Tinetti balance [TiB], Tinetti gait [TiG]), and Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale scores to see how fall experience, balance, mobility, and confidence of the persons with stroke affects their balance. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Forty-one subjects participated in this study. The BBS includes 14 items, consisting of a 5-point scale from 0 to 4, totaling up to 56 points. The Timed Up and Go-Alone (TUGA) was used to measure the average time to take a 3 m round-trip by getting up and down from a 46-cm high chair with an armrest on a flat floor. The Timed-Up-and-Go-Cognitive (TUGC) was performed by counting backwards and the Timed Up and Go-Manual (TUGM) is performed by holding a cup full of water. The total score for the TiB is 16 points, and the TiG is 12 points, making a total of 28 points. There are 16 items total for the ABC scale. Results: According to the fall experience, BBS, the TUGA and TUGC values were significantly higher in the inexperienced group compared to the experienced group (p<0.05). The number of falls was significantly correlated with BBS, TUGA, TUGC, TUGM, TiB, TiG, TiB+TiG (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study supports that falls experience is strongly related to balance, mobility, and confidence. Optimal balance training programs for fall prevention is still insufficient and must be developed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bimanual intensive training on Upper Extremity Function and activities of daily living in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were 18 patients who were diagnosed with hemiplegic stroke. They were randomly assigned to bimanual intensive training group (n=9) and unilateral intensive group (n=9). Bimanual training group performed bimanual task and unilateral training group performed one hand task for 1 hour per session, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks. Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analysis. Results : The results showed that, upper extremity motor function and bimanual coordination were significantly improved in patients in the bimanual training group (p<.05). Additionally, the ratio of affected hand use and amount of use/quality of movement in the hemiplegic upper extremity in activities of daily living for patients in the bimanual training group were significantly improved (p<.05). Although the unilateral group improved motor upper extremity function and activities of daily living in the upper extremity (p<.05), it was not significantly different from that in the bimanual training group. In between-group comparison, bimanual coordination and ratio of the affected hand use in a day were significantly different (p<.05). Conclusion : It is reasonable to conclude that bimanual intensive training therapy is an effective intervention method to improve upper extremity motor function, and activities of daily living in stroke patients.
