In this study, the volumetric heat source in electron beam welding (EBW) is modeled through finite element method taking advantage of ABAQUS software package. Since this welding method is being applied in plates with different thicknesses and also considering that residual stresses reduce the strength of these weldments, the effect of thickness in the distribution and magnitude of residual stresses after welding is studied. Regarding the vast application of Inconel 706 super-alloy in aerospace industries, this material was selected in the current research. In order to validate the finite element model, the obtained results were compared to those of other researchers in this area, and good agreement was observed. The simulation results revealed that increase in the plate thickness leads to increase in the residual stresses. In addition heat treatment in the base metal (before welding) increases the residual stresses significantly.

Numerical analysis of vertical solidification process allowing solid-liquid density change is performed by a hybrid method between a winite volume method (FVM) and a finite element method (FEM). The investigation focuses on the influence of solid-liquid density change and cooling rates on the motion of solid-liquid interface, solidified mass fraction, temperatures and thermal stresses in the solid region. Due to the density change of pure aluminium, solid-liquid interface moves more slowly but the solidified mass fraction is larger. The cooling rate of the wall is shown to have a significant influence on the phase change heat transfer and thermal stresses, while the density change has a small influence on the motion of the interface, solidified mass fraction, temperature distributions and thermal stresses. As the cooling rate increases, the thermal stresses become higher at the early stage of a solidification process, but it has small influence on the final stresses as the steady state is reached.
For metal forming analysis, upper-bound solution is practical method because the solution is overestimated. It is limited to determine stresses on tools by using upper-bound solution. In this study, new scheme to calculate stresses on tools based on upper bound solution is proposed. To verify the proposed scheme, plane strain drawing has been considered. The stresses on tools obtained by the proposed scheme are compared with results of rigid plastic FEM. And the stresses on tools have been determined by the proposed scheme in the forging within plane strain deformation.

We calculate the variation of the surface stresses according to uniaxial and biaxial strains in face-centered cubic (FCC) metals. In our study, three mainly observed free surfaces of seven representative FCC metals are considered. Employed method is molecular mechanics, in which the interaction of atoms is described by empirical interatomic potentials. As uniaxial strain increases to tensile direction, the surface stresses on {100} and {110} free surfaces decrease monotonously, while those on {111} surface increase. These tendencies are the same regardless of the species of metals and interatomic potentials employed. However, when the system is under biaxial strain, surface stresses change different according to the surface directions, the species of metals, and even interatomic potentials. On {100} and {111} surfaces, heavy metals (Pt, Au) show the opposite variation to light metals (Ni, Cu). In the cases of Pd and Ag, the surface stresses reveal the opposite tendency, depending on interatomic potentials used.
This paper presents an algorithm for the evaluation of stresses in reinforced concrete sections under service loads. The algorithm is applicable to any section defined by polygonal contours and is based on an analytical integration of the stresses. The nonlinear behaviour of concrete is represented by the parabola-rectangle law used in the Eurocode-2 for the ultimate concrete design. An integrated definition of the strains in concrete and steel is possible by the use of Heaviside functions, similarly to what is done for ultimate section design in Barros et al. (2004). Other constitutive equations for the definition of the stresses in the concrete or steel can be easily incorporated into the code. The examples presented consist in the evaluation of resulting axial load and bending moment in an irregular section and in a section in L shape. The results, for service stresses, can also be plotted in terms of design abacus; a rectangular doubly reinforced section is presented as example.

The paper investigates the previous studies about welding residual stresses in nuclear components. First, various residual stress measurement methods are reviewed in applicability. Second a finite element welding residual stress analysis technique, which was developed from the viewpoint of FFS (Fitness-For-Service) assessment, is explained. Third, characteristics of the welding residual stresses on J-groove welds and butt welds were presented via investigating the previous studies. Last, engineering formulae for residual stresses in the FFS assessment codes such as R6 and API 579/ASME FFS-1 Code is summarized.

Welding residual stresses are the main topics of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortion of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. That is, expansion of material by high temperature and distortion by cooling during welding process are caused by tensile and compressive residual stresses in welding material, and this residual stresses can induce fracture and fatigue problems of welding structures. The accurate prediction of residual stress and relaxation due to mechanical loading of weld zone is very important to improve the quality of weldment. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the relaxation of residual stresses due to mechanical loading. The effects of load ratio for static and cyclic loading are evaluated based on analytical results.

The fabric composite rings for nozzle parts of solid rocket motors should be thick to endure high temperature and pressure of combustion gas. Since the thermal residual stresses developed during manufacturing of the axi-symmetric composite structures increase as the thickness increases and eventually induce failures during storage and operation, the estimation of the residual stresses is indispensable for design and manufacture of the thick composite nozzle parts. In this paper, thick fabric rings made of carbon fabric phenolic composites were fabricated in a hydroclave and in an autoclave using a multi-step pre-compaction process to minimize draping. The residual stresses distributed in the rings were measured by the radial-cut method and it was found that the compaction reduces the residual stresses in the composite ring.

It is well known that during the oxygen cutting process residual thermal stresses are produced in weldment. The local non-uniform heating and subsequent cooling which takes place during any welding process causes complex thermal strains and stresses to finally lead to residual stresses exceed to the yield stress. High tensile stresses combined with applied structural load in the region near the welded joint can given rise to distortion brittle fracture change of the fatigue strength and stress corrosion cracking. The appropriate treatment of the welded component which reduces the peak of he welding residual stresses is believed to lower risk of the fracture during the service of the structure. In this study the impact loading in oxygen cutting frame was applied to reduce the residual stress. After applying the impact loading redistribution of resid-ual stress was measured by cutting method and the effect of fatigue was tested.
