  • This paper deals with the singular stresses developed in a polymer coating on concrete due to temperature change. The boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface comer and such stress singularity dominates a very small region relative to layer thickness. Since the exceedingly large stresses at the interface corner cannot be borne by coating materials, local yielding or delamination can occur in the vicinity of free surface.

  • The residual thermal stresses at the interface corner between the elastic substrate and the viscoelastic thin film due to cooling from cure temperature down to room temperature have been studied. The polymeric thin film was assumed to be thermorheologically simple. The boundary element method was employed to investigate the nature of stresses on the whole interface. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface comer and such stress singularity might lead to edge cracks or delamination.

  • The evaluation of clamping condition has been regarded as the main issue in the safety-maintenance of the clamped high-tension bolts. For this, this paper proposes a method to estimate the axial stress by measuring the TOF (Time-Of-Flight) of ultrasonic wave, which is based on the acoustoelasticity or the dependency of sound speed on the stress. In this method, however, the variation of sound speed within the range of stress induced under the field condition is very small, and thus the accuracy of the TOF measurement is important. We adopted the phase detection method using tone-burst ultrasonic wave to measure the precise TOF. In order to verify the usefulness of the proposed method experiments are carried out and the results were compared with the stress measured by the strain gage. The results show good agreement with each other, and from these we can conclude that the proposed method is highly useful fnr the evaluation of clamping condition in the clamped high-tension bolts.

  • In this study, we have constructed a measuring system to investigate tensile stress measurement of tendons, which is employed in bridges, by means of the non-destructive and non-contact method. The measuring system consists of tensile stress applying apparatus up to 2 GPa, and power supply for ac and dc current to tendon directly to magnetize tendon in circular direction and to coil wound on yoke to magnetize tendon in axial direction. We have used two kinds of tendon, which were produced by different companies, using the measuring system constructed in this work. Two kinds of experiments are carried out in this work; $1^{st}$ experiment : ac current was applied to the tendon and dc current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil wound on yoke (SCY) was measured and $2^{nd}$ experiment : dc current was applied to the tendon and ac current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil on tendon (SCT) was measured. In case of $1^{st}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCY was changed below 200MPa tensile stress but the voltage was not increased above 200 MPa. In case of $2^{nd}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCT was decreased up to 1.5 GPa linearly. We expect that $2^{nd}$ experiment could be applied to the non-destructive testing of tensile stress measurement of tendon.

  • In this study, the singular thermal stresses induced during cooling down from high temperature to room temperature have been analyzed for the viscoelastic thin layer. The time domain boundary element method has been employed to investigate the behavor of stresses for the whole interface. Within the context of a linear viscoelastic theory, a stress singularity exists at the point where the interface between the elastic substrate and the viscoelastic thin layer intersects the free surface.

  • This paper presents an analysis of thermal stress induced along the interface between a polymeric coating layer and a steel substrate as a result of uniform temperature change. The epoxy layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material and to be theromorheologically simple. The viscoelastic boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The numerical results exhibit relaxation of interface stresses and large stress gradients, which are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the polymeric coating layer, local cracking or delamination can occur at the interface corner.

  • Gas pipelines in bridges, roads and subway construction sections can undergo abrupt stress and vibration changes. To protect human life from any gas leakage accidents induced by the abrupt stress and vibration, the gas pipeline system needs to be continuously monitored. The estimation method of pipeline stress using MEMS wireless tilt sensor has been developed and its validity has been evaluated using a lab test bench.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the change of bending strength and fatigue strength in the unpoled and poled Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 ferroelectrics of tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary (MPM) and rhombohedral com-position in terms of internal stress which is measured by XRD method. Before poling treatment the highest bending strength was found in rhombohedral composition. After poling treatment the bending strength decreas-ed in all compositions but it decreased most remarkably in tetragonal composition. The most prominent de-crease of bending strength after poling treatment in tetragonal was attributed to the occurrence of microcracks due to highanisotropic internal stress around grain boundary which was induced of bending strength after poling in MPB and rhombohedral composition was not due to the occurrence of microcracks but to the increase in tensile internal stress perpendicular to the direction of crack propagation by domain alignment. Fatigue strength was higher before poling treatment than after poling treatment for various compositions.

  • This paper describes the characteristic analyses and a new design of the bushing for the pole transformers. The mechanical breakdown of the upper part of the bushing was frequently occurred. This caused the leakage of mineral oil, resulted in the interruption of electric power. Therefore, the bushings were investigated by the material analytical method and Finite Element Method. The analyses were performed by the Induced Coupled Plasma(ICP), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and Dielectric Thermal Analyzer(DETA). Also, the Von-Mises stress of the top part of bushing was determined by using ANSYS program. The Von-Mises stress of the newly designed bushing was reduced about 50%. Therefore, if we apply the newly designed bushing, the number of mechanical breakdown may be decreased.

  • In this paper, the solution of a semi-infinite plane with one circular hole is presented. This solution is induced by repeatedly superposing the solution of an infinite plane with one circular hole and that of a semi-infinite plane without holes to cancel out the stresses arising on both boundaries. This procedure is carried out until the stresses arising on both boundaries converge. This method does not require complicated calculation procedures as does the method using stress functions defined in a bipolar coordinate system. Some numerical results are shown by graphical representations.
