  • Pressure grouting is a common technique in geotechnical engineering to increase the stiffness and strength of the ground mass and to fill boreholes or void space in a tunnel lining and so on. Recently, the pressure grouting has been applied to a soil-nailing system which is widely used to improve slope stability. The soil-nailing design has been empirically performed in most geotechnical applications because the interaction between pressurized grouting paste and the adjacent ground mass is complicated and difficult to analyze. The purpose of this study is to analyze the increase of pullout resistance induced by pressurized grouting with the aid of performing laboratory model tests and field tests. In this paper, two main causes of pullout resistance increases induced by pressurized grouting were verified: the increase of residual stress; and the increase of coefficient of pullout friction. From the laboratory tests, it was found that residual stress in borehole increases by pressurized grouting and dilatancy angle could be estimated by cavity expansion theory using the measured wall displacements. From the field test results, the pullout resistance of soil-nailing with pressurized grouting was found to be 10% larger than that of soil-nailing with gravitational grouting, mainly caused by mean normal stress increase and dilatancy effect. So, the pullout resistance could be estimated by considering these two effects. The radial displacement increases with dilatancy angle increase and the dilatancy angle decreases with injection pressure increase. The measured pullout resistance obtained from field tests is in good agreement with the estimated one from the cavity expansion theory.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to investigate whether long-term, low-level exposure to monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) induced insulin resistance. Methods: The subjects were 110 male workers who were occupationally exposed to styrene, toluene, and xylene. One hundred and ten age-matched male workers who had never been occupationally exposed to organic solvents were selected as a control group. Cytokines, which have played a key role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, and oxidative stress indices were measured. Assessment of exposure to MAHs was performed by measuring their ambient levels and their urinary metabolites in exposed workers, and the resulting parameters between the exposed group and non-exposed control groups were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in general characteristics and anthropometric parameters between the two groups; however, total cholesterol, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels were significantly higher in the exposed group. Phenylglyoxylic acid levels showed significant association with tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, total oxidative status, and oxidative stress index via multiple linear regression analysis. Further, there was a negative correlation between methylhippuric acid levels and total anti-oxidative capacity, and there was a significant relationship between MAHs exposure and fasting glucose levels, as found by multiple logistic regression analysis (odds ratio = 3.95, 95% confidence interval = 1.074-14.530). Conclusion: This study indicated that MAHs increase fasting glucose level and insulin resistance. Furthermore, these results suggested that absorbing the organic solvent itself and active metabolic intermediates can increase oxidative stress and cytokine levels, resulting in the changes in glucose metabolism and the induction of insulin resistance.

  • Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

  • The surface treatment technique to increase corrosion resistance is very important in mechanical components of structures. Therefore, this paper investigates the effects of shot peening on the corrosion resistance of SCM 420steel. The results show that the surface compressive residual stress largely increases, which cause the increase of corrosion resistance.

  • Shock-resistance test for a real equipment for a normal vessel is one of the difficult problem in many cases because of terrible cost and weight. An analysis technique to evaluate the shock resistance in a design stage is necessary, instead In this paper, the process to evaluate the shock resistance of a propulsion motor for naval vessels was presented based on German navy's BV043 regulation. The shock signal to impose the equipment under the test was first evaluated, and was then applied to the structural FE model of the equipment. From the transient FEA, the time history of von-Mises stress was obtained by the mode superposition method. The shock resistance was evaluated using the peak value of the von-Mises stress.

  • The flood wave generated due to dam break is affected by initial depth upstream since it is related with hydraulic characteristics propagating downstream, and flow resistance stress has influence on the celerity, travel distance, and approaching depth of shock wave in implementing numerical simulation. In this study, a shallow water flow model employing SU/PG scheme was developed and verified by analytic solutions; propagation characteristics of dam break according to flow resistance and initial depth were analyzed. When bottom frictional stress was applied, the flow depth was relatively higher while the travel distance of shock wave was shorter. In the case of Coulomb stress, the flow velocity behind the location of dam break became lower compared with other cases, and showed values between no stress and turbulent stress at the reach of shock wave. The value of Froude number obtained by no frictional stress at the discontinuous boundary was the closest to 1.0 regardless of initial depth. The adaption of Coulomb stress gave more appropriate results compared with turbulent stress at low initial depth. However, as the initial depth became increased, the dominance of flow resistance terms was weakened and the opposite result was observed.

  • To maintain serviceability of concrete structure more than proper it is necessary not only predict service life through periodical monitor but also need monitoring system to recognize optimal time and method for repair. Recently, CPGFRP, replacing some GFRP with CF, is developed and used for monitoring concrete fraction. But dramatic resistance change of CPGFRP is showed below 0.5% strain and it is not small strain in terms of monitoring micro crack in concrete. In other word, monitoring with CF is not suitable in low stress hut hight stress. In this study, we accessed applicable possibility and reliability of CPGFRP composite as monitoring sense that is proved very sensitive to stress through domestic and oversea previous study. CPGFRP composite plays a role in specimen like steel and increases flexural strength. CPGFRP composite shows resistance increasement in micro crack. In particular, CPUFRP is more sensitive than strangage in low stress. Resistance change ratio curve is very similar to strain curve so sensitivity and reliability is very excellent to monitor concrete fracture.

  • Corrosion fatigue cracking of the austenitic stainless steel(bese metal & heat affected zone by TIG weld) was studied experimentally under the environments of various specific resistance and air. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue crack growth rate and the environmental constants of paris' rule were investigated for SUS 304 weldments in the various specific resistance. The influences of stress intensity factor range and corrosion on the crack growth rate were compared. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue cracking for the weldments were inspected from mechanical, electrochemical and microstructural point of view. Main results obtained are as follows: 1) As the specific resistance decreases, the environmental constant C of paris'rule increases(hence the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate is rapid), but the environmental constant m decreases, so the effect of corrosion to the crack growth rate is more susceptible than thet of stress intensity factor range. 2) As the stress intensity factor range decreases, the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of heat affected zone is more susceptible than that of the base metal. 3) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of the heat affected zone is more rapid than that of the base metal, because of the phenomenon of softening and the less noble potential coused by wedlding heat cycle. 4) The corrosion fatigue cracking of SUS 304 weldment appears transgranular fracture.
