Effectiveness of Worksite Intervention on Stress Management: An Analytic Literature Review

  • With growing significance of psychological well-being in the worksite, the purpose of this analysis was to overview the empirical studies on worksite stress management and to identity the overall effect of worksite health promotion programs on stress management through meta-analysis. Literature retrieval was conducted on-line first in MEDLINE, EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier, and PSYCHINFO databases in public health, psychology, sociology, and human resource management areas. All studies written in English and published in the peer-reviewed journals during 1990 and 2002 were recruited. Key words used in literature retrieval were 'worksite,' 'intervention,' 'program,' 'work stress,' 'strain,' 'burnout,' 'management,' 'prevention,' 'education,' and 'health promotion.' A total of 18 worksite intervention studies with 48 effect sizes were analyzed and the results were as follows. Approximately 60% of the studies had quasi-experimental design and were conducted in manufacturing company and public sector. General psychological strains and burnout were frequently used measures of psychological stress. The lecturing and discussion typed intervention and the participatory problem-solving typed intervention were employed more than others in the studies. The average effect (r: pearson's simple correlation coefficient) weighted by sampling error was -0.14 (-0.32 to 0.05). In the conventional category of effects this is a small effect ranging from -0.59 to 0.05. Binomial effect size showed that success rates increased from 43% without intervention to 57% after an intervention. Sampling error explained 47.14% of the observed variance and its effectiveness on stress management were heterogeneous. In regression analysis with suspected moderating factors affecting the worksite interventions, research design was the only significant moderating factor. The studies with quasi-experimental design had greater effects than the studies with experimental design.

Work-related Stress and Risk Factors among Korean Employees (한국 근로자의 업무관련성 스트레스와 위험요인)

  • Purpose: Work-related stress and risk factors among Korean employees were identified in this study. Methods: Data were obtained from employees aged 20 to 64 using the Korean Working Conditions Survey 2006 (KWCS). Multiple logistic regression analysis using SAS version 9.1 was performed to examine risk factors of work-related stress by gender. Results: The age-adjusted prevalence of work-related stress among male and female employees was 18.4% and 15.1% respectively. After adjustments for multiple variables among both male and female employees, there was a significant relationship between work-related stress and risk factors including education, company size, work time, ergonomic risks, biological chemical risks, and job demands. The significant variables for male employees were housework load, occupational class, and shift work, and for female employees, type of employment. Conclusion: There is a need to develop and support intensive stress management programs nationally giving consideration to work-related stress associated with working time, physical working environment, and job demands. Based on gender specific approaches, for male employes, stress management programs should be developed with consideration being given to occupational class and shift work. For stress management programs for female employees, consideration needs to be given to permanent employment status, specifically those in small companies.

The Effect of Health Promoting Behavior on Stress among Resort Workers (리조트근로자의 건강증진행위가 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting stress among resort workers. Methods: The subjects of the study were 199 resort workers in a province of Korea. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires that were completed between November 16, 2017 and January 19, 2018. The questionnaire consisted of stress and health promoting behavior and its sub-areas such as health responsibilities, physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, and stress management. Using the SPSS 23.0 program, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results: The mean score of the stress levels of resort workers was $2.3{\pm}0.98$ out of a maximum score of 5. A multiple regression analysis revealed that gender, spiritual growth, and stress management were statistically significant factors in the model (p<.001), with an explanatory power of 35%. Conclusion: Stress levels were considerably high in resort workers. This study suggests that nursing interventions are needed to reduce stress levels and enhance health promoting behavior, especially spiritual growth and stress management, at both an individual and organizational level.

The Influences of Job Stress and Stress-Coping Style on Job Satisfaction of the Elementary School Teachers (초등교사의 직무스트레스와 스트레스 대처방식이 직무만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the influences among job stress, stress-coping style and job satisfaction of the elementary school teachers. An objective of study is 256 elementary school teachers. After choosing 7 schools located in Busan, 283 teachers participated in this study. The measurements used in this study were the teachers' job stress scale, coping ability scale against stress, and the Korea Teacher Opinionnaire Test. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 14.0 program. For handling data, correlations and Multiple Regression Analysis was conducted. Major findings were summarized as follows: First, it is found that reward & personnel management in sub-variables of job stress and control method in sub-variables of stress-coping style has significantly predicted job satisfaction level. Second, in sub-variables of job satisfaction, reward & personnel management, control method, management system, learning establishments has significantly predicted duties, increase of specialty, human relationships, and work atmosphere, respectively. Finally, the limitation of this study and suggestion for further research are presented.

Influence of Emotional Labor on the Job Stress of the Contact Department in a General Hospital Moderation Analysis of Foundation and Occupation (의료 종사자의 감정노동이 직무스트레스에 미치는 영향: 설립형태와 직종의 조절효과)

  • Objectives : The rapidly changing consumer-centric and customer-oriented nature of the medical environment results in significant cognitive load. We aimed to clarify the situation of emotional labor and job stress among hospital employees and seek policies and hospital management for employees' emotions. Methods : The study was conducted through a questionnaire about emotional labor and job stress among 554 individuals working in Seoul, in 9 national, public, and private hospitals. Results : The results of the emotional labor and job stress questionnaire showed statistically significant differences in surface behavior and job stress; both had higher values in employees from the private hospitals than employees from public hospitals. Conclusions : This study found that the stress of emotional labor is a serious problem in government medical institutions. In addition, these institutions need to provide internal customer satisfaction through the hospital ombudsman and harmonize work and healing programs by including plans for improvement.

Health Information Managers' Job Stress in an Electronic Medical Record Environment

  • This study sought to measure the influence of HIMs' work environment changes on job stress, and to explore measures for improving job satisfaction among them. A total of 275 hospital HIMs' were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Significant job stress impact variables were sorted out using a simple linear regression analysis. Then, through multiple linear regression analysis, multicollinearity was tested. Significant impact factors were identified from among the control variables, and job stress impact was measured. The survey revealed that in public hospitals where the EMR system has been implemented for a longer period, depression scores in HIMs' were increased. HIMs' job stress level was found to be affected by the following factors: computerization of their working environment, experience of depression, unemployment, and manpower reduction, as well as, their lifestyles, including leisure activities. The results of this study suggest that HIMs' job stress can be reduced through work environment improvement and improvement of their personal lifestyle habits.

Effect of Asthma Management Education Program on Stress and Compliance of Patients with Allergic Asthma to House Dust Mite

  • Purpose. This study was designed to examine the effect of asthma management education program applied to allergic asthma patients receiving immunotherapy due to house dust mite on their stress and compliance with health care regimens. Methods. A quasi experimental design with non-equivalent control group and non-synchronized design was used. The subjects of this study were 61 patients who were receiving immunotherapy at intervals of a week after their symptoms were diagnosed as house dust mite allergic asthma at the pulmonary department of a university hospital in Seoul. They were divided into an experimental group of 29 patients who received asthma management education and a control group of 32 patients. The asthma management education pro-gram was composed of group education (once) and reinforcement education (three times) with environmental therapy and immunotherapy to house dust mite. Results. Stress significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. Compliance with health care regimens significantly increased in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. Conclusions. The results suggested that the asthma management education program is effective for the management of stress and the improvement of compliance in patients with allergic asthma to house dust mite.

The Effects of Interpersonal Relationship Stress on Job Attitude and Turnover Intention: Focused on Hotel Employees in Food and Beverage Department (대인관계 스트레스가 직무태도와 이직의도에 미치는 영향: 호텔 식음료 종사원을 대상으로)

  • The purposes of this study was to investigate how interpersonal relationship stress had the impact on job attitude and turnover intention. To perform this study, total 420 questionnaire were distributed to regular hotel employees from October 16th to November 26th in 2017. Unworkable data were excluded, and final 344 usable responses were obtained for an empirical analysis. Frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were measured by using SPSS 18.0, respectively. For the study structure, interpersonal relationship stress primarily concentrated on the boss/staff/colleague/customer stress. Job attitude was divided into organization commitment and job satisfaction. Transfer intention was a single factor. The results of this study were shown as follows: Hypothesis 1, boss/customer stress have a negative effect on organization commitment and boss/colleague/customer stress have a negative effect on job satisfaction. Hypothesis 2, boss/customer stress have a positive effect on transfer intention. Hypothesis 3, tissue commitment have a negative effect on transfer intention. This results of this study have shown that stress management of employee is a source of management result in hotel business. This study have given to the hotel's human resource management and internal marketing for the practical implication and academical use.

Stress and coping of dental hygiene students in clinical practice (일부지역 치위생(학)과 학생들의 임상실습 스트레스와 대처)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the clinical practice stress reduction and to improve clinical practice satisfaction in dental hygiene students. Methods : The subjects were 354 dental hygiene students in Gwangju and Jeonnam. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out from June 3 to 21, 2013. The questionnaire included stress management in the clinical practice. Results : As for clinical practice stress, there was a significant relevance between satisfaction in major and clinical practice. Clinical practice stress coping had a significant relevance to clinical practice satisfaction and clinical practice stress. Conclusions : In order to reduce clinical practice stress in dental hygiene students and to enhance clinical practice satisfaction, it is important to develop clinical practice stress management program and to develop the appropriate measurement tool for stress.

The Influences of Perceived Adequacy Resource and Locus of Control on the Stress from the Family Resource Management in Housewives (가정자원적정도지각과 통제소재가 주부의 가정자원관리 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of perceived adequacy resource(PAR) and locus of control on the stress from the family resources management in housewives. The subjects of this study were 474 married women who lived in apartment in Taegu, . A questionaire was used as survey method. Factor analysis and MANOVA were employed for data analysis and Scheffe test for post-hoc analysis, . The main findings were ; First the effect of PAR on the degree of the stress from the family resources management was not different according to locus of control. Second the stress from the family resource management was found to be significantly different according to PAR.
