  • In this work, effects of oxygen plasma on surface characteristics of carbon fibers were investigated in mechanical properties interfacial of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid/base values, FT-IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Also, the mechanical properties of the composites were studied in and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate mode II ($G_{IIC}$) measurements. As experimental results, the $O_{lS}/C_{lS}$ ratio of the carbon fiber surfaces treated by oxygen plasma was increased compared to that of untreated ones, possibly due to development of oxygen-containing functional groups. The mechanical properties of the composites, including $K_{IC}$ and $G_{IIC}$ had been improved in the oxygen plasma on fibers. These results could be explained that the oxygen plasma was resulted in the increase of the adhesion of between fibers and matrix in a composite system.

  • This paper investigates the effect of inclusion of glass fibers on mechanical and fracture properties of binary blend geopolymer concrete produced by using fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. To study the effect of glass fibers, the mix design parameters like binder content, alkaline solution/binder ratio, sodium hydroxide concentration and aggregate grading were kept constant. Four different volume fractions (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4%) and two different lengths (6 mm, 13 mm) of glass fibers were considered in the present study. Three different notch-depth ratios (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were considered for determining the fracture properties. The test results indicated that the addition of glass fibers improved the flexural strength, split tensile strength, fracture energy, critical stress intensity factor and critical crack mouth opening displacement of geopolymer concrete. 13 mm fibers are found to be more effective than 6 mm fibers and the optimum dosage of glass fibers was found to be 0.3% (by volume of concrete). The study shows the enormous potential of glass fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete in structural applications.

  • In this work, the effects of oxy-fluorination on surface characteristics of carbon fibers were investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FT-IR. and contact angle measurements. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor $(K_{IC})$. As experimental results, the $F_{1S}/C_{1S}$ ratio of carbon fiber surfaces was increased by oxy-fluorination, due to the development of the oxygen containing functional groups. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $K_{IC}$, had been improved in the oxy-fluorination on fibers. These results could be explained that the oxy-fluorination was resulted in the increase of the adhesion between fibers and matrix in a composite system.

  • This study has examined the flexural properties of natural and chemically modified coir fiber reinforced cementitious composites (CFRCC). Coir fibers of two different average lengths were used, and the longer coir fibers were also treated with a 1% NaOH solution for comparison. The fibers were combined with cementitious materials and chemical agents (dispersant, defoamer or wetting agent) to form CFRCC. The flexural properties of the composites, including elastic stress, flexural strength, toughness and toughness index, were measured. The effects of fiber treatments, addition of chemical agents and accelerated ageing of composites on the composites' flexural properties were examined. The results showed that the CFRCC samples were 5-12 % lighter than the conventional mortar, and that the addition of coir fibers improved the flexural strength of the CFRCC materials. Toughness and toughness index, which were associated with the work of fracture, were increased more than ten times. For the alkalized long coir fiber composites, a higher immediate and long-term toughness index was achieved. SEM microstructure images revealed improved physicochemical bonding in the treated CFRCC.

  • Short, randomly disturbed steel fibers in concrete increase tensile strength and ductility of concrete under direct tension. These improvements are results form crack arrest mechanisms of steel fibers in concrete. These mechanisms are theoretically considered in this study and verification on the adequancy of different spacing for predicting tensile strength of SFRC are assessed. Results indicate that better correlation exists between experimental result and the spacing concept which take into account the effect of boundaries as well as vibration on reorientation of steel fibers inside concrete. Also considered is the modeling of stress-crack opening relationships in post-peak region of SFRC under tension which bass its deviation on micromechanics of fiber pull-out. Satisfactoring results are observed between tests results and the prediction of the model.

  • The use of carbon fibers (CF) and glass fibers (GF) were combined to strengthen concrete flexural members. In this study, data of tensile tests of 94 hybrid carbon-glass FRP sheets and 47 carbon and GF rovings or sheets were thoroughly investigated in terms of tensile behavior. Based on comparisons between the rule of mixtures and test data, positive hybrid effects were identified for various (GF/CF) ratios. Unlike the rule of mixtures, the hybrid sheets with relatively low (GF/CF) ratios also produced pseudo-ductility. From the calibrated results obtained from experiments, a new analytical model for the stress-strain relationship of hybrid FRP sheets was proposed. Finally, the hybrid effects were verified by structural tests of concrete members strengthened with hybrid FRP sheets and either carbon or glass FRP sheets.
