Purpose: This study determined the level of stress and type of coping style of spouses with high-risk pregnant women. Methods: Subjects were 102 spouses with high-risk pregnant women at 6 hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi province from January to August, 2009. The tools for this study were stress scale and coping scale. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The average score of subjects stress was 2.18 and coping score was 2.46 point out of 4.00. The highest score of stress categories was 2.44 point in emotional problems and the lowest score was 1.72 in communication and support resources. The stress level was significant differences according to length of marriage, number of hospital visits, satisfaction with marriage relationship, hospitalization days and gestational age respectively. Spouses tended to use an active coping style (2.60) rather than a passive coping style (2.31). There were significant differences according to mother's age and gestational age in active coping and educational level in passive coping. Conclusion: Considering the level of stress coping style and characteristics of high-risk pregnant women's spouses, a nursing intervention should be provided to help them alleviate stress and to encourage active coping.
Purpose: The objectives for this study were to identify the factors that correlate with appraisal of illness and to explore what variables are predictive of cancer patients primary caregivers' cognitive appraisal for stress. Method: The subjects were selected by convenient sampling and 130 caregivers who completed a questionnaire. Measures used in this study included the Family Inventory of Resources for Management, Social Support Index, Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scales and Family Coping Coherence Index. Pearson correlation was used to identify the relationship among factors and multiple regression was used to determine the individual and cumulative effect of potential predictors on the caregivers' appraisal. Results: Patient's level of activity, severity of the disease, quality of relation between patient and caregiver, caregiver's subjective health status, economic status, family resources and coping were significantly correlated. Among the variables, coping, family resources, economic status and quality of relation between caregiver and patient predicted 49.2 percent of the variance in appraisal of caregivers' stress condition. Conclusion: These findings suggest that coping mechanisms and family resources are important for positive appraisal. Nurses should provide adequate nursing care for the primary caregiver about professional care information and supportive counseling.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables which affect the coping styles for stress which was produced by family resource management in housewives. The subjects of this study were 565 married women who lived in apartment in Taegu. A questionnaire was used as survey method. The data was analyzed by means of factor analysis, t-test ANOVA Scheffe test coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The main findings were as follows; First the coping styles for stress were found to be significantly different according to the objective resources. Second perceived adequacy resource is positively correlated with the active coping style. Third locus of control is negatively correlated with the passive coping style and the evasive coping style, Forth in the coping styles for stress the active coping style was affected by locus of control perceived adequacy resource income employment of housewives and the evasive coping style was affected by locus of control.
This study was designed to examine the factors that influence the burnout of nurses practice healthcare in a hospital setting. Subjects for this study were 245 nurses working at University K hospital in Seoul, Korea. Data for this study was collected from 15 to 27 April, 2002. The data collection instruments used for this study are as follows: Maslach Burnout Inventory(1981), Orientation to Life Questionnaire(Sense of Coherence, SOC) by Antonovsky (1987) and Modified Coping Resources Inventory developed by author. The analysis of the data was completed using the descriptive, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression using the SAS program software. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Total mean score of burnout was 4.0. Mean scores of the subscales were; emotional exhausion 4.7, personalization 3.7, and personal accomplishment 3.4.2. Significant statistical differences according to demographic characteristics of the subjects were found in the variables of age, job position, years of working, perceived job stress, and burnout. 3. Burnout was negatively related to sense of coherence(r=-.65) and coping resources (r=-.40); subscales of SOC of comprehensibility(r=-.57), manageability (r= -.55), and meaningfulness(r= -.52); subscales of coping of self-care(r=-.36), and cognitive coping(r=-.39). 4. Job stress was the highest factor influence burnout. Sixty-one percent of the total variance of burnout was experienced by variables of comprehensibility, meaningfulness, age, self-care, manageability and leisure activities including job stress. In conclusion, it was found that a low level of burnout was related to high scores of SOC and coping resources. Job stress, manageability, and meaningfulness were the highest factors influencing the level of subscale of emotional exhausion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Therefore, it is necessary to search for strategies to promote SOC and coping resources for reducing the level of burnout of nurses.
The purpose of this study was to explore the degree of the stress from the family resources management according to objective resources and to investigate the relative importance of the variables which affect the stress from the family resources management in housewives. The subjects of this study were 565 married women who lived in apartment in Taegu. A questionnaire was used as survey method. The data was analyzed by means of factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and multiple regression analysis. The main findings were as follows First there was significant difference in the degree of the stress from the family resources management according to the objective resource. Second, the stress from the family resources management were more affected by perceived adequacy resource, the passive coping style, size of apartment than other variables.
The purpose of this study are to examine the influential variables between general character, family system, coping strategies, social support and stress of main caregivers for disordered elderly family. This study was conducted by interviewing of 177 family-members care to giving disordered elderly families in Taegu and Kyeongbuk province. The data were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package using frequency and percentage, multiple regression and path analysis. The results of this study were as follow : The variables influencing stress related to the disordered elderly family are the degree of disorder (${\beta}=.348^{***}$), caring-time-per day (${\beta}=.303^{***}$), employment status of main caregivers (${\beta}=.223^{***}$), social support (${\beta}=.241^{**}$), relational coping strategies (${\beta}=.199^{**}$), problem-avoidance coping strategies (${\beta}=.327^{***}$). Thus, in disordered elderly families, a high-stress situation arises with a highly-educated caregiver when problem-avoidence coping strategies or relational coping strategies are used or when daily caring time is great. A low-stress situation results when the caregiver is employed and the social support level is high.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of family stress, coping, family resources on psychological distress and the interactions with family solidarity and coping in unemployed female head. The sample was 101 unemployed female heads(without husband) who are living in Seoul. The results of this study showed that family solidarity had significant buffering effect to moderate relationship between family stress and psychological distress. But the effect of coping on psychological distress was not significant. This means that the family solidarity was very important to decrease the psychological distress(somatization, anxiety, depression) of unemployed female head.
This study examined the direct or indirect effects through burnout of sources of work stress of child welfare employees on turnover intentions. In addition, the study investigated the moderating effects of stress coping resources, which was hypothesized to buffer the negative effects of the sources of work stress on burnout. The study data were collected from 190 social workers in foster care services and child protective services. As a statistical method, structural equation model was employed. The study results showed that sources of work stress affect indirectly though raising the level of burnout. The study did not find the moderating effects of stress coping resources. Based on the results, implications for child welfare practice were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to identify how internal and external coping resources influenced active coping in the process of stress-coping. The model was established theoretically by comparing and integrating the following theories : Stress-Coping, Self-Care, and Resourcefulness. The subjects consisted of sixty eight patients undergoing chemotherapy(experimental group 34, control group 34) at two general hospitals from January to July, 1995. The results were as follows : After self-care education, the active coping score of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. The active coping score of the high resourcefulness group was significantly higher than that of the low resourcefulness group. The interaction effect between self-care education and resourcfulness was not significant statistically. Specifically as to such scores of seeking social support, problem-oriented strategy and self care behavior, there were significantly higher in the experimental group and high resourcefulness group than in each of the other groups. Considering them both, self-care education and resourcefulness are effective nursing strategies to promote active coping including self-care. Consequently, the synthesis and testing of theories of stress-coping, self-care, and resourcefulness in this study are mostly proven to enhance the explanation and prediction of the change of active coping including self-care. Therefore the result of this study will contribute in the development of practice theory of nursing. A further study is necessary to reevaluate the interaction effect between self-care education and resourcefulness and to identify the difference between resourcefulness and self-efficacy.
The study attempts to examine the moderating effects of social support and self-complexity in coping to the death of spouse among middle and old-aged widows. The important findings from the data based on the sample of 161 widows are (1) age differentiates the types of stress experienced by widows (2) social support and self-complexity may either buffer or intensify depending on the circumstances in which widows reside in the negative effects of stress on psychological health among widows and (3) the moderating role of social support and self-complexity differs according to age of widows with older widows being more affected by these coping resources The results of the study support the assumptions drawn from Life-Course Perspective to explain the coping process to the death of spouse.
