The EG/AD/S model ice, originally developed by Timco (1986), was selected as the primary model ice material for the newly built MOERI Ice Model Basin in Korea. However, the existence of a sugar component in the EG/AD/S mixture may cause a serious maintenance problem, as described in certain references. This study focuses on the tests of the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and the EG/AD model ice. In order to understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice and to find a possible substitute for sugar, a series of tests with the EG/AD model ice were performed, and the results were compared to those of the EG/AD/S model ice. The relatively large size of the MOERI Ice Model Basin made it difficult to control the initial strength of model ice, so it took a much longer time to achieve the target strength. In order to obtain a lower strength and stiffness for the model ice, the amount of chemical additives may be varied to achieve the desired strength level. This paper is a preliminary study aimed at seeking a possible substitute for the original EG/AD/S model ice for utilization in a large-scale ice tank. To understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice, the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ice, such as flexural strength, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, were tested in the laboratory condition and compared to each other. The warm-up procedure seems to be an important factor to reduce ice strength in the tests, so it is discussed in detail.
The shear strength of unsaturated soils, a research hotspot in geotechnical engineering, has great guiding significance for geotechnical engineering design. Although kinds of calculation models for the shear strength of unsaturated soil have been put forward by predecessors, there is still need for new models to extensively consider the nonlinear variation of shear strength, particularly for the nonlinear effect of the net normal stress on the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Here, the shear strength of unsaturated soils is explored to study the nonlinear effects of net normal stress with the introduction of a general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion, and the relationship between the matric suction (or suction stress) and degree of saturation (DOS) constructed by the soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC) of van Genuchten is also applied for unsaturated soil. Then, two calculation models (i.e., an envelope shell model and an effective stress model) are established for the shear strength of unsaturated soils under the nonlinear strength theory. In these two models, the curve of the shear strength of unsaturated soils versus the net normal stress exhibits a tendency to gently. Moreover, the proposed formulas have flexibility and convenience with five parameters (for the effective stress model) or six parameters (for the envelope shell model), which are from the M-C strength parameters of the saturated soil and fitting parameters of SWCC of van Genuchten. Thereafter, by comparison with the classical theory of the shear strength of unsaturated soils from some actual cases, the rationality and accuracy of the present models were verified.
Shear failure of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is a major concern for structural engineers. It has been shown through various studies that the shear strength and ductility of RC beams can be improved by adding steel fibers to the concrete. An accurate model predicting the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams will help SFRC to become widely used. An artificial neural network (ANN) model consisting of an input layer, a hidden layer of six neurons and an output layer was developed to predict the shear strength of SFRC slender beams without stirrups, where the input parameters are concrete compressive strength, tensile reinforcement ratio, shear span-to-depth ratio, effective depth, volume fraction of fibers, aspect ratio of fibers and fiber bond factor, and the output is an estimate of shear strength. It is shown that the model is superior to fourteen equations proposed by various researchers in predicting the shear strength of SFRC beams considered in this study and it is verified through a parametric study that the model has a good generalization capability.

This paper deals with the interfacial effects of silica fume (SF) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) on compressive strength of concrete. Analyzing the compressive strength results of 32 concrete mixes performed over two water-binder ratios (0.35, 0.45), four percentages replacement of SF (0, 5, 7.5, and 10 %) and four percentages of SBR (0, 5, 10, and 15 %) were investigated. The results of the experiments were showed that in 5 % of SBR, compressive strength rises slightly, but when the polymer/binder materials ratio increases, compressive strength of concrete decreases. A mathematical model based on Abrams' law has been proposed for evaluation strength of SF-SBR concretes. The proposed model provides the opportunity to predict the compressive strength based on time of curing in water (t), and water, SF and SBR to binder materials ratios that they are shown with (w/b), (s) and (p).This understanding model might serve as useful guides for commixture concrete admixtures containing of SF and SBR. The accuracy of the proposed model is investigated. Good agreements between them are observed.
The objective of this study was to develop a strength prediction model using a polynomial regression analysis based on the experimental results obtained from ninety samples. As the results of a correlation analysis between various mixing factors and unconfined compressive strength using SPSS (statistical package for the social sciences), the governing factors in the strength of lightweight soil were found to be the crumb rubber content, bottom ash content, and water-cement ratio. After selecting the governing factors affecting the strength through the correlation analysis, a strength prediction model, which consisted of the selected governing factors, was developed using the polynomial regression analysis. The strengths calculated from the proposed model were similar to those resulting from laboratory tests (R2=87.5%). Therefore, the proposed model can be used to predict the strength of lightweight mixtures with various mixing ratios without time-consuming experimental tests.
Study on high temperature properties of concrete and internal force estimation of structural member subjected to high temperature mainly applied high temperature strength model based on experimental results with concrete under 40MPa. However, it is reported that degradation of internal force at high temperature and spalling of ultra high strength concrete are higher than that of normal strength concrete. Therefore, this study attempts to propose compressive strength degradation model which is suitable to ultra high strength concrete comparing to existing model by evaluating high temperature properties of ultra high strength concrete.
A model for predicting the relative density and the compressive strength of open-cell ceramics with three-dimensional network structure was proposed through the interpretation of their macrostructure and fracture mechanics. The equation predicting the relative density was derived under the assumption that the open-cell structure was a periodic array of the tetrakaidecahedron unit cell consisting of cylindrical struts containing the internal hollow with the shape of a triangular prism. The model for compressive strength of open-cell ceramics with the hollow strut was also developed by modifying conventional model which based on fracture behavior of them subjected to the compressive stress. Both the relative density and the compressive strength were expressed in terms of the ratio of the strut diameter to the length together with the ratio of the hollow size to the strut diameter. The proposed model for the relative density and the compressive strength of the alumina-zirconia composite with open-cell structure were accorded well with the experimental values, whereas Gibson-Ashby and Zhang's model did not show such a good agreement.
Compressive strength is one of the most important engineering properties of concrete, and testing of the compressive strength of concrete specimens is often costly and time consuming. In order to provide the time for concrete form removal, re-shoring to slab, project scheduling and quality control, it is necessary to predict the concrete strength based upon the early strength data. However, concrete compressive strength is affected by many factors, such as quality of raw materials, water cement ratio, ratio of fine aggregate to coarse aggregate, age of concrete, compaction of concrete, temperature, relative humidity and curing of concrete. The concrete compressive strength is a quite nonlinear function that changes depend on the materials used in the concrete and the time. This paper presents an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for the prediction of concrete compressive strength. The training of fuzzy system was performed by a hybrid method of gradient descent method and least squares algorithm, and the subtractive clustering algorithm (SCA) was utilized for optimizing the number of fuzzy rules. Experimental data on concrete compressive strength in the literature were used to validate and evaluate the performance of the proposed ANFIS model. Further, predictions from three models (the back propagation neural network model, the statistics model, and the ANFIS model) were compared with the experimental data. The results show that the proposed ANFIS model is a feasible, efficient, and accurate tool for predicting the concrete compressive strength.
Reinforced concrete corbels are generally used to transfer loads within a structural system, such as buildings, bridges, and facilities in general. They commonly present low aspect ratio, requiring an accurate model for shear strength prediction in order to promote flexural behavior. The model described here, originally developed for walls, was adapted for corbels. The model is based on a reinforced concrete panel, described by constitutive laws for concrete and steel and applied in a fixed direction. Equilibrium in the orthogonal direction to the shearing force allows for the estimation of the shear stress versus strain response. The original model yielded conservative results with important scatter, thus various modifications were implemented in order to improve strength predictions: 1) recalibration of the strut (crack) direction, capturing the absence of transverse reinforcement and axial load in most corbels, 2) inclusion of main (boundary) reinforcement in the equilibrium equation, capturing its participation in the mechanism, and 3) decrease in aspect ratio by considering the width of the loading plate in the formulation. To analyze the behavior of the theoretical model, a database of 109 specimens available in the literature was collected. The model yielded an average model-to-test shear strength ratio of 0.98 and a coefficient of variation of 0.16, showing also that most test variables are well captured with the model, and providing better results than the original model. The model strength prediction is compared with other models in the literature, resulting in one of the most accurate estimates.
This paper presents an analytical study on the strength and stiffness of various types of truss structures. The applied models are triangular-like opened truss-wall triangular model (OTT), closed truss-wall triangular model (CTT), opened solid-wall triangular model (OST), and hypercube models defined as core-filled or core-spaced cube. The models are analyzed by numerical model analysis using DEFORM 2D/3D tool with AISI 304 stainless steel. Then, the ideal solutions for stiffness and strength are defined. Finally, the relative elastic modulus of the core-spaced model is obtained as 0.0009, which is correlated with the cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.029-0.03, and the relative elastic modulus for the core-filled model is obtained as 0.0015, which is correlated with cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.035-0.036. For the relative compressive yield strength, the OTT reasonably agrees with the cancellous bone for the relative density of 0.042 and the relative compressive strength of 0.05. The CTT and OST are in good agreement at the relative density of 0.013 and the relative compressive yield strength of 0.002. The hypercube models can be used for the cancellous bone for stiffness, and the triangular models can be used for the cancellous bone for strength. However, none of the models can be used to replace the compact bone because it requires much higher stiffness and strength. In the near future, compact bone replacement must be further studied. In addition, previously mentioned models should be developed further.
