  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical and biological properties of orthodontic bonding agents containing silver- or zinc-doped bioactive glass (BAG) and determine the antibacterial and remineralization effects of these agents. Methods: BAG was synthesized using the alkali-mediated solgel method. Orthodontic bonding agents containing BAG were prepared by mixing BAG with flowable resin. $Transbond^{TM}$ XT (TXT) and $Charmfil^{TM}$ Flow (CF) were used as controls. Ion release, cytotoxicity, antibacterial properties, the shear bond strength, and the adhesive remnant index were evaluated. To assess the remineralization properties of BAG, micro-computed tomography was performed after pH cycling. Results: The BAG-containing bonding agents showed no noticeable cytotoxicity and suppressed bacterial growth. When these bonding agents were used, demineralization after pH cycling began approximately 200 to $300{\mu}m$ away from the bracket. On the other hand, when CF and TXT were used, all surfaces that were not covered by the adhesive were demineralized after pH cycling. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that orthodontic bonding agents containing silver- or zinc-doped BAG have stronger antibacterial and remineralization effects compared with conventional orthodontic adhesives; thus, they are suitable for use in orthodontic practice.

  • A load-following operation in APR+ nuclear plants is necessary to reduce the need to adjust the boric acid concentration and to efficiently control the control rods for flexible operation. In particular, a disproportion in the axial flux distribution, which is normally caused by a load-following operation in a reactor core, causes xenon oscillation because the absorption cross-section of xenon is extremely large and its effects in a reactor are delayed by the iodine precursor. A model predictive control (MPC) method was used to design an automatic load-following controller for the integrated thermal power level and axial shape index (ASI) control for APR+ nuclear plants. Some tracking controllers employ the current tracking command only. On the other hand, the MPC can achieve better tracking performance because it considers future commands in addition to the current tracking command. The basic concept of the MPC is to solve an optimization problem for generating finite future control inputs at the current time and to implement as the current control input only the first control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, the procedure to solve the optimization problem is then repeated. The support vector regression (SVR) model that is used widely for function approximation problems is used to predict the future outputs based on previous inputs and outputs. In addition, a genetic algorithm is employed to minimize the objective function of a MPC control algorithm with multiple constraints. The power level and ASI are controlled by regulating the control banks and part-strength control banks together with an automatic adjustment of the boric acid concentration. The 3-dimensional MASTER code, which models APR+ nuclear plants, is interfaced to the proposed controller to confirm the performance of the controlling reactor power level and ASI. Numerical simulations showed that the proposed controller exhibits very fast tracking responses.

  • Technology trends of coal gasification were studied through patent analysis. The patents published or registered in Korea, U. S. A., Japan and Europe, and administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization from mid 1970s to 2010 were analyzed based on the application tendency, patent share, major applicants and their activity indices, and market power, etc. Japan and U. S. A. led the patent activities in the early phase of technology development, but major applicants had been diversified globally since 2000. Portfolio analysis revealed that the technology was under developing period. The analysis showed that the most active R&D had been focused on gasifier development. Technology competitiveness was analyzed via indices such as cites per patent, patent impact index, technology strength and patent family size, etc. Key patents were extracted through quantification based on patent family size and cites per patent. The technology flow was figured out to reveal the technology trends.

  • The effect of water extracts of Chungkukjang(WEC: 10%, w/v), which was prepared using Bacillus subtilis isolated from Korean traditional Chungkukjang, on the pH, acidity and volume of the dough, and loaf volume index(LVI), color, texture, retrogradation degree, microscopic observation and sensory quality of the bread were investigated. Experimental plots were divided to 3 groups(Control; without WEC, I; added 2.5% WEC against total amount of water, II; added 5.0% WEC against total amount of water). There were no significant difference in pH and acidity among each experimental groups. Dough volume were higher but LVI were lower in the 1- and II-bread than those of control group. L* values of the top crust and internal tissue in the I- and II-bread were lower than those of control group. The higher addition amounts had the lower L* values. Hardness, strength, gumminess and brittleness were higher, but cohesiveness and springiness were lower in the WEC-breads than those of control. In the results of microscopic observation, there were scarce of the bigger starch granules and a sparse structure, while there were smaller starch granules in the WEC-bread. The scores of crispy taste of the WEC-bread were lower than those of the control group, but there were no significant difference in tenderness, odor, savory taste and overall acceptability between the control and the I-bread. The retrogradation rate of the bread stored for 3 days at 25℃ was 45.09% in control, 17.92% in I-bread, and 12.45% in II-bread, respectively.

  • Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between alloy steel ASTM A387 Gr. 91 and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with Flux cored arc welding(FCAW) have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, mechanical strength, chemical analysis by EDS as well as corrosion test. Three heat inputs of 15.0, 22.5, 30.0kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E71T-1C wire. Post-weld heat treatment was carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 h. Based on microstructural examination, Intragranular polygonal ferrite and grainboundary ferrite were formed only in first layer of weld metal. Another layers consisted of acicular ferrite and $Widmannst{\ddot{a}}tten$ ferrite. The amount of acicular ferrite was increased with decreasing heat input and layer. Heat affected zone of alloy steel showed the highest hardness due to the formation of tempered martensite and lower bainite. Lower and upper bainite were formed in heat affected zone of carbon steel. Tensile strengths of dissimilar metal welds decreased with increasing heat inputs. Dissimilar metal welds showed a good hot cracking resistance due to the low HCS index below 4. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals welds showed that the weight loss rate by corrosion below 170 hours was decreased with increasing heat inputs due to the increase of the amount of acicular ferrite.
