Composites Fatigue Life Evaluation based on non-linear fatigue damage model (비선형 피로손상 모델을 이용한 복합재 피로수명 평가)

  • Prediction of composite fatigue life is not a straightforward matter, depending on various failure modes and their interactions. In this paper, a methodology is presented to predict fatigue life and residual strength of composite materials based on Phenomenological Model(non-linear fatigue damage model). It is assumed that the residual strength is a monotonically decreasing function of the number of loading cycles and applied fatigue stress ratio and the model parameters(strength degradation parameter and fatigue shape parameter) are assumed as function of fatigue life. Then S-N curve is used to extract model parameters that are required to characterize the stress levels comprising a randomly-ordered load spectrum. Different stress ratios (${\sigma}_{min}/{\;}{\sigma}_{max}$) are handled with Goodman correction approach(fatigue envelope) and the residual strength after an arbitrary load cycles is represented by two parameter weibull functions.

  • In the companion paper (Model Development), an analytical model estimating the available rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames was proposed. In this paper, two limit states were considered as the connection rotation capacity criteria: (i) strength degradation failure when the strength falls below the nominal plastic strength due to the local buckling of the beam's cross-section and (ii) low-cycle fatigue fracture caused by plastic strain accumulation at the buckled flange after only a few cycles of high-amplitude deformation. A series of analyses are conducted using the proposed model with two limit states under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Beam section geometric parameters, such as flange and web slenderness ratios, varied over the practical ranges of H-shapedbeams to observe their effect on the rotation capacity and low-cycle fatigue life of pre-qualified WUF-W connections.

An Evaluation of Moisture Susceptibility on Asphalt Mixtures by Rainfall Intensity (강우강도에 따른 아스팔트 혼합물 종류의 수분민감도 평가)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate moisture susceptibility of a dense graded and an open graded asphalt mixtures by the method of AASHTO T-283. METHODS : To simulate moisture damage of asphalt pavements with continuously rainfall during summer rainy season, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were immersed in water for 15 days and were measured the weight and the change of strength. Also, the mixtures were performed five freeze-thaw cycles to simulate moisture damage of the mixtures by freeze-thaw during winter and were measured the change of strength. The degradation characteristics model was used to analyze the relationship between strength and moisture damage. RESULTS : According to the results, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were shown in the similar trends of the strength changes by immersion time and freeze-thaw cycle. However, the moisture damage reduction of open graded asphalt mixture was more sensitive in early phase than that of dense graded asphalt mixture.

Probabilistic Fiber Strength of Composite Pressure Vessel (복합재 압력용기의 확률 섬유 강도)

  • In this paper, probabilistic failure analysis based on Weibull distribution function is proposed to predict the fiber strength of composite pressure vessel. And, experimental tests were performed using fiber strand specimens, unidirectional laminate specimens and composite pressure vessels to confirm the volumetric size effect on the fiber strength. As an analytical method, the Weibull weakest link model and the sequential multi-step failure model are considered and mutually compared. The volumetric size effect shows the clearly observed tendency towards fiber strength degradation with increasing stressed volume. Good agreement of fiber strength distribution was shown between test data and predicted results for unidirectional laminate and hoop ply in pressure vessel. The site effect on fiber strength depends on material and processing factors, the reduction of fiber strength due to the stressed volume shows different values according to the variation of material and processing conditions.

Analysis and design of demountable embedded steel column base connections

  • This paper describes the finite element model for predicting the fundamental performance of embedded steel column base connections under monotonic and cyclic loading. Geometric and material nonlinearities were included in the proposed finite element model. Bauschinger and pinching effects were considered in the simulation of embedded column base connections under cyclic loading. The degradation of steel yield strength and accumulation of plastic damage can be well simulated. The accuracy of the finite element model is examined by comparing the predicted results with independent experimental dataset. It is demonstrated that the finite element model accurately predicts the behaviour and failure models of the embedded steel column base connections. The finite element model is extended to carry out evaluations and parametric studies. The investigated parameters include column embedded length, concrete strength, axial load and base plate thickness. Moreover, analytical models for predicting the initial stiffness and bending moment strength of the embedded column base connection were developed. The comparison between results from analytical models and those from experiments and finite element analysis proved the developed analytical model was accurate and conservative for design purposes.

Strain-dependent-deformation property of Gyeongju compacted bentonite buffer material for engineered barrier system

  • This study aims to investigate the strain-dependent-deformation property of Gyeongju bentonite buffer material. A series of unconfined compressive tests were performed with cylindrical specimens prepared at varying dry densities (𝜌d = 1.58 g/cm3 to 1.74 g/cm3) using cold isostatic pressing technique. It is found that as 𝜌d increase, the unconfined compressive strength (qu), failure strain, and elastic modulus (E) of Gyeongju compacted bentonite (GCB) increases. Normalized elastic modulus (Esec/Emax) degradation curves of GCB specimens are fitted using Ramberg-Osgood model and the elastic threshold strain (𝜀e,th) is determined through the fitted curves. The strain-dependency of E and Poisson's ratio (v) of GCB were observed. E and v were measured constant below 𝜀e,th of 0.14 %. Then, E decreases while v increases after exceeding the strain threshold. The Esec/Emax degradation curves of GCB in this study suggests wider linear range and higher linearity than those of sedimentary clay in previous study. On top of that, the influence of 𝜌d is observed on Esec/Emax degradation curves of GCB, showing a slight increase in 𝜀e,th with increase in 𝜌d. Furthermore, an empirical model of qu with 𝜌d and a correlation model between qu and E are proposed for Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials.

A Comparative Study of the Linear-elastic and Hyperelastic Models for Degradation of PLA Prepared using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF 방식으로 제작된 PLA의 열화에 따른 선형탄성 및 초탄성 모델의 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a process extruding and stacking materials. PLA materials are one of the most frequently used materials for FFF method of 3D printing. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based materials are among the most widely used materials for FFF-based three-dimensional (3D) printing. PLA is an eco-friendly material made using starch extracted from corn, as opposed to plastic made using conventional petroleum resin; PLA-based materials are used in various fields, such as packaging, aerospace, and medicines. However, it is important to analyze the mechanical properties of theses materials, such as elastic strength, before using them as structural materials. In this study, the reliability of PLA-based materials is assessed through an analysis of the changes in the linear elasticity of these materials under thermal degradation by applying a hyperelastic analytical model.

A Study on Reliability Assessment of Ag-free Solder (무은 솔더의 신뢰성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The solder is any of various fusible alloys, usually tin and lead, used to join metallic parts that provide the contact between the chip package and the printed circuit board. Solder plays an important role of electrical signals to communicate between the two components. In this study, two kinds of Ag-free solder as sample is made to conduct the thermal shock test and the high humidity temperature test. Low resistance is measured to estimate crack size of solder, using daisy chain. The low speed shear test is also performed to analyze strength of solder. The appropriate degradation model is estimated using the result data. Depending on the composition of solder, lifetime estimation is conducted by adopted degradation model. The lifetime estimated two kinds of Ag-free solder is compared with expected lifetime of Sn-Ag-Cu solder. The result is that both Ag-free composition are more reliable than Sn-Ag-Cu solder.

An Experimental Study on the Mechanical Properties Model of High Strength Concrete at High Temperature (고온시 고강도 콘크리트의 역학적 특성 모델 설정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This research is to present experimental materials model of high strength concrete for prediction of fire safety of structural members based on mechanical properties of materials during heating up to 800$^{circ}C$. The following conclusions are drawn from this study. First of all, between 100 to 200$^{circ}C$, the high strength concrete show degradation at 100$^{circ}C$ and restoration at 200$^{circ}C$. The high strength concrete show elastic deformation at 20 - 200$^{circ}C$. Second, between 300 to 400$^{circ}C$, the mechanical properties of the high strength concrete which are exposed to fire show $75\~95\%$ as compared to the original properties because the thermally expanded ingredients of concrete, aggregates and cement paste, etc. Finally, beyond 600$^{circ}C$, the high strength concrete shows $75\~80\%$ reduction in thermal properties as compared to the normal concrete in the range of 600 to 800$^{circ}C$ and it shows $10\~30\%$ as compared to the original properties.

Ultimate strength performance of tankers associated with industry corrosion addition practices

  • In the ship and offshore structure design, age-related problems such as corrosion damage, local denting, and fatigue damage are important factors to be considered in building a reliable structure as they have a significant influence on the residual structural capacity. In shipping, corrosion addition methods are widely adopted in structural design to prevent structural capacity degradation. The present study focuses on the historical trend of corrosion addition rules for ship structural design and investigates their effects on the ultimate strength performance such as hull girder and stiffened panel of double hull oil tankers. Three types of rules based on corrosion addition models, namely historic corrosion rules (pre-CSR), Common Structural Rules (CSR), and harmonised Common Structural Rules (CSR-H) are considered and compared with two other corrosion models namely UGS model, suggested by the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), and Time-Dependent Corrosion Wastage Model (TDCWM). To identify the general trend in the effects of corrosion damage on the ultimate longitudinal strength performance, the corrosion addition rules are applied to four representative sizes of double hull oil tankers namely Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax, and VLCC. The results are helpful in understanding the trend of corrosion additions for tanker structures.
