Existing models for the shear strength degradation of reinforced concrete members present varied conceptual approaches to interpreting test data. The relative superiority of one approach over the others is difficult to determine, particularly given the sparseness of ideal test data. Nevertheless, existing models are compared using a suite of test data that were used for the development of one such model, and significant differences emerge. Rather than relying purely on column test data, the body of knowledge concerning degradation of concrete as a material is considered. Confined concrete relations are examined to infer details of the degradation process, and to establish a framework for developing phenomenologically-based models for shear strength degradation in reinforced concrete members. The possibility of linking column shear strength degradation with material degradation phenomena is explored with a simple model. The model is applied to the results of 7 column tests, and it is found that such a link is sustainable. It is expected that models founded on material degradation phenomena will be more reliable and more broadly applicable than the current generation of empirical shear strength degradation models.
This paper aims to investigate the strength degradation of reinforced concrete piers wrapped with steel plates which corrode at the pier base by employing a three dimensional elasto-plastic finite element formulation. The prediction accuracy of the employed finite element analysis method is firstly verified by comparing the analytical results with test results. Then, a series of parametric studies is carried out to investigate the effects of steel plate's corrosion position along width direction, corrosion depth along plate thickness, corrosion range along width direction, and steel plate-concrete bonding degradation on the strength of the piers. It is observed that the strength degradation of the piers is closely related to steel plate's corrosion position, corrosion depth and corrosion range in the case of local corrosion on the webs. In contrast, when the base of flanges corrodes, the strength degradation of the piers is only related to steel plate's corrosion depth and corrosion range, and the influence of corrosion position on the strength degradation is very gentle. Furthermore, the strength of the piers decreases with the degradation of steel plate-concrete bonding behavior. Finally, the maximum strength of the piers obtained from numerical analysis corresponding to different bonding behavior is compared with theoretical results within an accepted error.

Nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out to investigate the influence of the pinching hysteretic response of the exterior RC beam-column joints on the seismic behavior of multistory RC frame structures. The effect of the pinching on the local and global mechanisms of an 8-storey bare frame and an 8-storey pilotis type frame structure is evaluated. Further, an experimental data bank extracted from literature is used to acquire experimental experience of the range of the real levels that have to be considered for the pinching effect on the hysteretic response of the joints. Thus, three different cases for the hysteretic response of the joints are considered: (a) joints with strength and stiffness degradation characteristics but without pinching effect, (b) joints with strength degradation, stiffness degradation and low pinching effect and (c) joints with strength degradation, stiffness degradation and high pinching effect. For the simulation of the beam-column joints a special-purpose rotational spring element that incorporates the examined hysteretic options developed by the authors and implemented in a well-known nonlinear dynamic analysis program is employed for the analysis of the structural systems. The results of this study indicate that the effect of pinching on the local and global responses of the examined cases is not really significant at early stages of the seismic loading and especially in the cases when strength degradation in the core of exterior joint has occurred. Nevertheless in the cases when strength degradation does not occur in the joints the pinching may increase the demands for ductility and become critical for the columns at the base floor of the frame structures. Finally, as it was expected the ability for energy absorption was reduced due to pinching effect.
Study on high temperature properties of concrete and internal force estimation of structural member subjected to high temperature mainly applied high temperature strength model based on experimental results with concrete under 40MPa. However, it is reported that degradation of internal force at high temperature and spalling of ultra high strength concrete are higher than that of normal strength concrete. Therefore, this study attempts to propose compressive strength degradation model which is suitable to ultra high strength concrete comparing to existing model by evaluating high temperature properties of ultra high strength concrete.
In the orthopedic field which firstly used zirconia as artificial joints, researchers had studied the reasons for collapsing zirconia used as restorative material by accumulated inner cracks in several years and they found out Low Temperature Degradation is one of the reasons. In the dentistry field, it has not been too long since they used zirconia as the cores of all-ceramic restoration; however, the study is needed as prophylactic measure against Low Temperature Degradation which can be caused by saliva wetting the mouth all the time and frictional forces such as bite pressure and masticatory pressure. Artificial aging by autoclaving is used because there are difficulties of testing in the patient's mouth. To study the changes in the material properties, the flexural strength of dental zirconia ceramic is measured before and after the test. The following are the result of the test. 1) The zirconia blocks in the autoclaves at $130^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ are phase-shifted tetragonal to monoclinic by Low Temperature Degradation. 2)The non-autoclaved specimens have the average fractural strength of 1346.4MPa, the specimens autoclaved at $130^{\circ}C$ have 1226.4Mpa and the specimens autoclaved at $200^{\circ}C$ have 1024.1MPa. The tests show that as the temperature increases, the flexural strength tend to decrease and the differences are noticeable(p<0.001). 3)Through the Duncan's post-hoc test, the differences in flexural strength of the 3 groups were listed in order of strength like normal temperature>at $130^{\circ}C$ autoclave low temperature degradation> at $200^{\circ}C$ autoclave low temperature degradation.
Steel is becoming increasingly popular due to its high strength, excellent ductility, great assembly performance, and recyclability. In reality, steel structures serving for a long time in atmospheric, industrial, and marine environments inevitably suffer from corrosion, which significantly decreases the durability and the service life with the exposure time. For the mechanical properties of corroded steel, experimental studies are mainly conducted. The existing numerical analyses only evaluate the mechanical properties based on corroded morphology at the isolated time-in-point, ignoring that this morphology varies continuously with corrosion time. To solve this problem, the relationships between pit depth expectation, standard deviation, and corrosion time are initially constructed based on a large amount of wet-dry cyclic accelerated test data. Successively, based on that, an in-situ pitting evolution method for evaluating the residual tensile strength of corroded steel is proposed. To verify the method, 20 repeated simulations of mass loss rates and mechanical properties are adopted against the test results. Then, numerical analyses are conducted on 135 models of corrosion pits with different aspect ratios and uneven corrosion degree on two corroded surfaces. Results show that the power function with exponents of 1.483 and 1.091 can well describe the increase in pit depth expectation and standard deviation with corrosion time, respectively. The effect of the commonly used pit aspect ratios of 0.10-0.25 on yield strength and ultimate strength is negligible. Besides, pit number ratio α equating to 0.6 is the critical value for the strength degradation. When α is less than 0.6, the pit number increases with α, accelerating the degradation of strength. Otherwise, the strength degradation is weakened. In addition, a power function model is adopted to characterize the degradation of yield strength and ultimate strength with corrosion time, which is revised by initial steel plate thickness.
In the concept of two-parameter fatigue failure criterion, the material fatigue failure is determined by the damage degree and the current stress level. Based on this viewpoint, a residual strength degradation model for stud shear connectors under fatigue loads is proposed in this study. First, existing residual strength degradation models and test data are summarized. Next, three series of 11 push-out specimen tests according to the standard push-out test method in Eurocode-4 are performed: the static strength test, the fatigue endurance test and the residual strength test. By introducing the "two-parameter fatigue failure criterion," a residual strength calculation model after cyclic loading is derived, considering the nonlinear fatigue damage and the current stress condition. The parameters are achieved by fitting the data from this study and some literature data. Finally, through verification using several literature reports, the results show that the model can better describe the strength degradation law of stud connectors.
The static and fatigue tensile tests have been conduted to predict the fatigue life of 8-harness satin woven and plain woven carbon/epoxy composite plates containing a circular hole. A fatigue residual strength degradation model, based on the assumption that the residual strength for unnotched specimen decreases monotonically, has been applied to predict statistically the fatigue life of materials used in this study. To determine the parameters(c, b and K) of the residual strength degradation model, the minimization technique and the maximum likelihood method are used. Agreement of the converted ultimate strength by using the minimization technique with the static ultimate strength is reasonably good. Therefore, the minimization technique is more adjustable in the determination of the parameter and the prediction of the fatigue life than the maximum likelihood method.
The mechanical properties and damage mode of {{{{ {Y}_{2 } {O}_{3} }}-doped tetragonal (Y-TZP) can-didated as biomaterials were performed under indentation stress-strain curve critical load for yield and cracking strength degradation and fatigue behavior with Hertzian indentation tests. This material shows the brittle behavior which is confirmed by indentation stress-strain response. The critical load for cracking(Pc) is much higher than that for yields (Py) indicating crack resistance Strength were strongly dependant on contact area and there were no degradation when the indenter size was ${\gamma}$=3.18 mm suggesting that Y-TZP should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts. Multi-cycle contact were found to be innocuous up to {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 500N and {{{{ {10 }^{5 } }} cycles at 1000N in water. On the other hand contacts at {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 1000 N in water did show some signs of incipient degradation. By contrast contacts with Vickers indenter pro-duced substantial strength losses at much lower loads suggesting that the mechanical integrity of this ma-terial would be compromised by inadvertent sharp contacts.
