This paper presents a method that uses the stress failure criteria to predict the tensile failure strength of open-hole laminates with stress concentrations. The composite material used in this study corresponds to a 177 ℃ cured, carbon/epoxy unidirectional tape prepreg. The results obtained by testing ten different laminates were compared and analyzed to verify the tensile strength of the open-hole laminates predicted using the proposed stress failure criteria. The findings of this study confirm that the tensile strength predictions performed using the proposed method are generally accurate, except in cases involving highly soft laminates (10% of 0° ply).
The present study focuses on the effect of geometrical discontinuity, strength mismatch, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, and loading rate on the ductile crack initiation using two-parameter criterion. Fracture initiation testing has been conducted under static and dynamic loading using circumferentially notched round-bar specimens. In order to evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens, especially under dynamic loading, a thermal elastic-plastic dynamic finite element (FE) analysis considering the temperature rise due to plastic deformation has been carried out.
Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test(τ/σ= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio τ/σ. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.
In this paper, the importance of the size effects on the strength ratio is demonstrated by numerical results. The rate of decrease of tensile strength is for glass fiber, based on the experience of a composite manufacturing specialist. For other material, similar procedure may be used until detailed test result on such material is available. The strength criteria used is that of Tsai-Wu for stress space. The factors influencing the ratio are, reducing the tensile strength alone or both tensile and compression strengths, selection of the normalized interaction term, that is, the generalized Von Mises criterion or the Hill's criterion, and the status of applied stresses. Some of the numerical results are presented for a guideline for the furture study.

Recently advantages joining dissimiliar materials and light weight material techniques have led to increasing use of structural adhesives in the various industries. Stress singulartiy occurs at the interface edges of adhesively bonded dissimilar materials. So it is required to analyze its stress singularity at the interface edges of adhesively bonded joints indissimilar materials. In this paper, the analysis method of stress singularity is studied in detail. Also, effects of the stress singularity at the interface edge of adhesively bonded scarf joints in combinations of dissimilar materials are investigated by using 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method. As the results, the strength evaluation method of adhesively bonded dissimilar materials using the stress singularity factor, $\Gamma$,is very useful. The fracture criterion, method of strength evaluation and prediction of fracture strength by the stress singularity factor on the adhesively bonded dissimilar materials are proposed.

This method surely needs a hole that causes local strength and stiffness deterioration of the structure because of stress intensity. In this work, three dimensional stress analysis of pin-loaded joint for quasi-isotropic composite laminates was performed using commercial finite element software. Stress distribution was calculated near the edge of the pin-leaded hole and effects of the stacking sequence on the delamination were investigated. Also, the delamination strength of the composite laminates was predicted using the Ye-delamination failure criterion and compared with the experimental results. finally, newly modified failure criterion has been suggested owing to the consideration of effects of interlaminar normal stress on the delamination strength.
An elastic-plastic solution for cavity expansion problem considering strength degradation, undrained condition and initial anisotropic in-situ stress is established based on the Tresca yield criterion and cavity expansion theory. Assumptions of large-strain for plastic region and small-strain for elastic region are adopted, respectively. The initial in-situ stress state of natural soil mass may be anisotropic caused by consolidation history, and the strength degradation of soil mass is caused by structural damage of soil mass in the process of loading analysis (cavity expansion process). Finally, the published solutions are conducted to verify the suitability of this elastic-plastic solution, and the parametric studies are investigated in order to the significance of this study for in-situ soil test.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the fatigue test data of pavement concrete. The static strength tests were carried out to check the compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tension strength at 56 days in order to minimize strength variation effect during test. The specimens were fabricated at twelves sections at a construction site of highway. The stress level and stress ratio of fatigue test were determined from static test results. The results are as follow: The flexural strength at 28 days mostly satisfied the criterion for design, but the compressive strength at 28 days were slightly below the criterion even though it satisfied at 56 days. The fatigue limit was 2 million cycles if the specimen was not failed to that cycles. The S-N curves were developed from the fatigue test results at each stress levels and each stress ratio. Then, the fatigue life of pavement concrete at a given stress level and fatigue strength of pavement concrete could be derived from these curves. Analysis using method No.2 was more acceptable because resulting of comparison and analysis using method No.2 was presented 2 sections were presented $R^2$ < 0.7, and other 2 sections were presented 0.7 < $R^2$ < 0.8, and the others 8 sections were $R^2{\geq}0.8$.

Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) have been used in various fields because of its high specific modulus, and chemical properties. Most products in which CFRP composites are used are manufactured by joining the product components by bolts or pins. Holes for bolts and pins decrease the strength of the components because these holes act as notches in the structures. In this study, the fracture strength of CFRP plain-weave composite plates containing holes is experimentally investigated to examine the effects of hole-size and specimen width on notched tensile strength. The results show that the characteristic length considered in the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and specimen width. There exists a certain relation between notched tensile strength and characteristic length. Fracture criterion is redefined on basis of this relation.
When the equipment which is related to safety or important to power production is installed in nuclear power plant units (NPPs), verification of equipment Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS) must be performed. The low-frequency radiated magnetic field susceptibility (RS101) test is one of the EMS tests specified in U.S NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.180 revision 1. The RS101 test verifies the ability of equipment installed in close proximity to sources of large radiated magnetic fields to withstand them. However, RG 1.180 revision 1 allows for an exemption of the low-frequency radiated magnetic susceptibility (RS101) test if the safety-related equipment will not be installed in areas with strong sources of magnetic fields. There is no specific exemption criterion in RG 1.180 revision 1. EPRI TR-102323 revision 4 specifically provides a guide that the low-frequency radiated magnetic field susceptibility (RS101) test can be conservatively exempted for equipment installed at least 1 m away from the sources of large magnetic fields (>300 A/m). But there is no exemption criterion for equipment installed within 1 m of the sources of smaller magnetic fields (<300 A/m). Since some types of equipment radiating magnetic flux are often installed near safety related equipment in an electrical equipment room (EER) and main control room (MCR), the RS101 test exemption criterion needs to be reasonably defined for the cases of installation within 1 m. There is also insufficient data regarding the strength of magnetic fields that can be used in NPPs. In order to ensure confidence in the RS101 test exemption criterion, we measured the strength of low-frequency radiated magnetic fields by distance. This study is expected to provide an insight into the RS101 test exemption criterion that meets the RG 1.180 revision 1. It also provides a margin analysis that can be used to mitigate the influence of low-frequency radiated magnetic field sources in NPPs.
