  • The interfacial adhesive joining characteristics of the foams are very important for the structural integrity of sandwich structures. Peel strength is one of the best criteria for the interfacial characteristics of the sandwich structures and peel energy is most commonly used for the interfacial characteristics. The peel strength is the first peak force per unit width of bond line required to produce progressive separation by the wedge or other crack opening type action of two adherends where one or both undergo significant bending and the peel energy is the surface active energy per unit width of bond line. In this work, to investigate the strengthening effect of resin treatment on the interfacial surface of foam material, peel strength and peel energy of epoxy resin treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures were obtained by the cleavage peel tests and compared with those of non surface treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures.

  • Characteristics of a turbulence wind model control the magnitude and frequency distribution of wind loading on floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), and an in-depth understanding of how wind spectral characteristics affect the responses, and ultimately the design cost of system components, is in shortage in the offshore wind industry. Wind spectrum models as well as turbulence intensity curves recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have characteristics derived from land-based sites, and have been widely adopted in offshore wind projects (in the absence of site-specific offshore data) without sufficient assessment of design implications. In this paper, effects of wind spectra and turbulence intensities on the strength or extreme responses of a 5 MW floating offshore wind turbine are investigated. The impact of different wind spectral parameters on the extreme blade loads, nacelle accelerations, towertop motions, towerbase loads, platform motions and accelerations, and mooring line tensions are presented and discussed. Results highlight the need to consider the appropriateness of a wind spectral model implemented in the strength design of FOWT structures.

  • PURPOSES : Bonded concrete overlay is a favorable maintenance method since the material properties are similar to existing concrete pavements. In addition, bonded concrete overlay has advantage of structural performance since the overlay layer and the existing pavement perform as a monolithic layer. It is important to have suitable bond strength criteria to secure the performance of bonded concrete overlay. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing bond strength characteristics between existing concrete pavement and overlay material. METHODS: Bond strength between overlay and existing pavement are measured and analyzed for various conditions such as the type of overlay materials, compressive and flexure strength of overlay and existing pavement, and deterioration status of existing pavement. RESULTS: The strength of overlay material does not significantly influence the bond strength. The overlay of ultra-rapid hardening cement generally gives low bond strength. However, ultra rapid hardening polymer modified concrete gives robust bond strength. The deterioration of existing concrete significantly decrease the bond strength. CONCLUSIONS: Bond strength of bonded concrete overlay highly depends on condition of existing concrete pavement rather than overlay material.

  • The thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as temperature dependency of strength and deformation were experimentally investigated using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. For the temperature below critical threshold temperature $T_c$, the variation of uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Brazilian tensile strength and cohesion with temperature were slightly different for each rock type, but these mechanical properties decreased at the temperatures above $T_c$ by the effect of thermal cracking. Tensile strength was most affected by $T_c$, and uniaxial compressive strength was least affected by $T_c$. To the temperature of 20$0^{\circ}C$ with the confining prressure to 150 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, failure limit on principal stress plane and failure envelope on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane of Iksan granite were continuously lowered with increasing temperature but those of Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite showed different characteristics depending on minor principal stress on principal stress plane and normal stress on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane. The reason for this appeared to be the effect of rock characteristics and confining pressure. Young's modulus was also temperature and pressure dependent, but the variation of Young's modulus was about 10%, which was small compared to the variation of compressive strength. In general, Young's modulus increased with increasing confining pressure and increased or decreased with increasing temperature to 20$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the rock type.

  • Geopolymer is a sustainable concrete, replaces traditional cement concrete using alternative sustainable construction materials as binders and alkaline solution as alkaline activator. This paper presents the strength characteristics of geopolymer concrete (GPC) developed with fly ash and GGBS as binders, combined Sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution as alkaline activators. The parameters considered in this research work are proportions of fly ash and GGBS (70-30 and 50-50), curing conditions (Outdoor curing and oven curing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours), two grades of concrete (GPC20 and GPC50). The mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength along with durability characteristics were determined. For studying the durability characteristics of geopolymer concrete 5% $H_2SO_4$ solutions was used and the specimens were immersed up to an exposure period of 56 days. The main parameters considered in this study were Acid Mass Loss Factor (AMLF), Acid Strength Loss Factor (ASLF) and products of degradation. The results conclude that GPC with sufficient strength can be developed even under Outdoor curing using fly ash and GGBS combination i.e., without the need for any heat curing.

  • Recently, application of CSG is increasing in various design construction projects. At the initial stage of cementation CSG materials show the same mechanical characteristics as soil, however, as the cementation process develops, CSG materials gradually reveal material characteristics of concrete. The hardened CSG manifests elastic behavior such as maximum strength at small strain range and rapid brittle failure. In this research, PVA fiber stiffeners were used in order to: (1) reduce such brittle behavioral characteristics; (2) improve the relatively weak tension performance of CSG materials. The binding strength between the bed materials and fiber prevents rapid brittle failure and increases tensional strength of fiber reinforced CSG materials.Test results show that fiber reinforcement alone could induce the stress-strain characteristics of CSG materials from brittle failure to ductile failure and also increase the residual strength.

  • This experimental study is performed by using artificial lightweight aggregate manufactured in laboratory, and the test results of it are compared with those using foreign materials in respect of design compressive strength, unit weight. The tests on strength characteristics such as bending, splitting tensile strength and on mechanical characteristics including σ-εcurve, elastic modulus, poisson's ratio are performed to provide the fundamental data required for the design. From this study, it is possible to obtain the high-strength concrete having compressive strength of 500 kg/㎠ and unit weight of 1.85-2.0 t/㎥. And also it is recommended that sandlightweight concrete having high specfic strength is more practical for general use.
