  • Polymer-modified mortar was developed for improving the performance of modified mortar which is mixed with polymer, and it is used for protecting and repairing materials of building because of their excellent performance to improve characteristics which are compressive strength, flexural strength, and adhesive strength. However, the performances of the polymer-modified mortars are highly affected by materials, which are polymer, mortar, and aggregates, and conditions which are curing environment and testing method. Furthermore, dry curing method after hydrated curing has been recommended to make strong polymer film for the best curing method to make excellent characteristics. In this report, We investigated the co-relation between curing methods and the characteristics, which are compressive strength, flexural strength, and adhesive strength for the polymer-modified mortars that are used in the domestic area.

  • Many scholars and researchers has been studied for many kinds of soil characteristics, but a lot of part are still unsolved. Cyclic load-induced decreasing characteristics of strength and stiffness of soils are also well not known among them. To know that, the characteristics of five kinds of soils; clay, plastic and non-plastic silt, sand, and a weathered soil are compared with dividing two types as plastic or non-plastic soils through direct simple shear(DSS) test. From the results of DSS test, it is known that decreasing characteristics of strength and stiffness are different according to soil types. The strength of plastic and non-plastic soils increases with increment of plasticity index and decrement of volume decrease potential, respectively. And the decreasing stiffness of plastic and non-plastic soils increases with decrement of plasticity index and increment of volume decrease potential, respectively.

  • The shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated earth material are highly important not only for evaluating the seepage characteristics but also the stability of levee for a lifelong. In this study, unsaturated strength characteristics of Nak-dong river sand and clay that frequently used for the levee construction in southern province of Korea were analyzed using unsaturated triaxial compressive test. The strength characteristics due to the variation of matric suction were analyzed using multi-stage compression technique and the results were directly compared with the non-linear formulation for the apparent cohesion ($C_{max}$), and the friction component ${\varphi}^b$ were determined and evaluated from the test for the application of linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Cohesion and friction characteristics of the unsaturated levee material under various suction phases were also explored during this study.

  • The use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) from steel industries waste is showing perspective application in civil engineering as partial substitute to cement. Use of such waste conserves natural resources and minimizes the space required for landfill. The GGBFS used in the present work is of ultra fine size and hence serves as micro filler. In this paper strength and durability characteristics of ultra fine slag based high strength concrete (HSC) (with a characteristic compressive strength of 50 MPa) were studied. Cement was replaced with ultra fine slag in different percentages of 5, 10, and 15% to study the compressive strength, porosity, resistances against sulfate attack, sorptivity and chloride ion penetration. The experiments to study compressive strength were conducted for different ages of concrete such as 7, 28, 56, and 90 days. From the detailed investigations with 16 mix combinations, 10% ultra fine slag give better results in terms of strength and durability characteristics.

  • The characteristics of adhesive bonded joint of steels for automobile were investigated. Shear and tear strength were tested and analyzed for the joints of cold rolled steel sheets bonded with three kinds of epoxy and urethane based adhesive. The results showed that the tensile shear strength and the tear strength of adhesive joint were affected by the shape of adhesive joint such as the length and width of adhesive joint. The thickness of adhesive layer was very important factor affecting the bonding strength. The shear strength increased with decrease of the thickness of adhesive layer, while the tear strength decreased as the thickness of adhesive layer decreased. In comparison with the strength of spot welded joint, the shear strength of adhesive Joint was higher than that of spot welded joint, but the tear strength of adhesive Joint was lower than that of spot welded joint.

  • In this research, the characteristics of the strength development and chloride attack resistance on the concrete using high early strength cement by steam curing temperature condition were studied. As a result, It is observed that the early strength(16hr) is increasing and the strength of 28 days is decreasing, according as the rising of the steam curing temperature without the kinds of base cement(OPC and high early strength cement). On the other hand, it is observed that the more the contents of the unit binder(base cement + GGBF) is abundant, the more the steam curing temperature can be reduced in case of the high early strength. Also, the chloride attack resistance is improved according as the amount of GGBF is increased with the kinds of base cement(OPC and high early strength cement).

  • This paper are the mechanical characteristics of eccentrically loaded normal strength and high strength reinforced concrete columns based on the test results. The columns are $120\times120$mmat the mid-section and are haunched at the ends to apply the eccentric loading and prevent premature failure. Variables are concrete strengths(361, 672, 974 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), $\textrm{cm}^2$longitudinal reinforcement ratios (1.98, 3.54, 1 5.53%), spacing of lateral reinforcement (30, 60, 120mm), and eccentricities (24, 40mm). As a results, the main conclusions obtained from the comparison and analysis for the strength tendency, deformation and ductility of high strength reinforced concrete columns with variables are as follows; As the concrete compressive strength concrete and lateral reinforcement increases, the ductility index of high strength reinforced concrete columns decrease, but it increase with the increase of eccentricity and longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The confinement ratio must be greater than 20 percent in order for the level of ductility between high strength reinforced concrete columns and normal strength reinforced concrete columns to be almost equal.

  • In general, various factors such as grain size, chemical composition, amorphous amount, amorphous Si and Al content of fly ash affect the reaction with cement. In this study, we investigate the effect of fly ash particle characteristics on compressive strength. The standard sand was pulverized to a particle size similar to that of fly ash and the compressive strength was measured by blending with the cement as in fly. Using the measured compressive strength results, strength enhancement by cement hydration reaction and strength enhancement by particle filling effect were confirmed. Strength increment by pozzolanic reaction of fly ash was calculated by using the compressive strength results of mortar substituted with standard powder. As a result of comparison between compressive strengths and the particle characteristics of fly ash, the blaine showed a weak correlation with the compressive strength and the PI(Pozzolanic Index) showed good correlation with the 10% penetration diameter(D10) and the 50% Respectively. Therefore, it is expected that PI will be a good means to evaluate the fly ash characteristics together with the chemical characteristics of fly ash.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose new hysteretic characteristics of medium- to low-rise RC structures controlled by both shear and flexure. Through previous study, the dual lateral force-resisting system composed of shear and flexural failure members has a new failure mechanism that cooperates to enhance the flexural capacity of the flexural failure member even after the failure of the shear member, and the existing theoretical equation significantly underestimates the ultimate strength. In this study, the residual lateral strength mechanism of the dual lateral force-resisting system was analyzed, and, as a result, an equation for estimating the residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was proposed. The residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was verified in comparison with the structural testing results obtained in previous study, and the proposed residual flexural strength equation for shear-failure members was tested for reliability using FEA, and its applicable range was also determined. In addition, restoring-force characteristics for evaluating the seismic performance of the dual lateral force-resisting system (nonlinear dynamic analysis), reflecting the proposed residual flexural strength equation, were proposed. Finally, the validity of the restoring-force characteristics of RC buildings equipped with the dual lateral force-resisting system proposed in the present study was verified by performing pseudo-dynamic testing and nonlinear dynamic analysis based on the proposed restoring-force characteristics. Based on this comparative analysis, the applicability of the proposed restoring-force characteristics was verified.
