  • The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum range of laser energy density to the enamel surface of permanent incisors when they are irradiated with the pulsed Nd : YAG laser, Laser impacts on each experimental group were made at energy density of $20\sim50J/cm^2$ by 20 pulses of the pulse width 1.2 msec. The author investigated the enamel surface with the sunning electron microscope(SEM) and the surface roughness tester, and measured the shear bond strength between electrolytically etched Ni-Cr-Be alloy casting and composite resin. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The surface roughness of enamel after laser irradiation showed the significant difference level from the energy density $40J/cm^2(P<0.05)$. 2. The mean shear bond strength of etched-metal resin-bonded specimens were $154.23{\pm}33.30kg/cm^2$ at unlased enamel surface and $195.72{\pm}29.56kg/cm^2$ at lased energy density $30J/cm^2$, and showed a significant difference(P<0.05). 8. SEM photographs showed the irregular microcracks and the structural changes of lased enamel surface. 4. SEM photographs of the fracture surface after testing the shear bond strength showed the aspect of interfacial fracture between bonding agent and composite resin at the metal sides.

  • The turning tests with sintered carbide tools have been conducted on typical high strength SSW2 railway wheel steel and its machinability were examined in terms of the cutting resistance, the roughness of turning surface, the chip disposal and others. Some results obtained in this paper are as follows: (1) The cutting resistance is not affected by the cutting speed (in this paper these were 23-78 m/min). (2) The roughness of finished surface is found to be largely dependent on cutting conditions and tool geometry. (3) There exists the explicit relates between the tool geometry cutting conditions (cutting speed, feedrate, and depth of cut) and independent variables(cutting resistance, surface roughness) are derived.

  • Silicon carbide and its composites are being considered as a nuclear fuel cladding material for LWR nuclear reactors because they have a low neutron absorption cross section, low hydrogen production under accident conditions, and high strength at high temperatures. The SiC composite cladding tube considered in this study consists of three layers, monolith CVD SiC - $SiC_f$/SiC composite -monolith CVD SiC. The volume fraction of SiC fiber and surface roughness of the composite layer affect mechanical and corrosion properties of the cladding tube. In this study, various types of SiC fiber preforms with tubular shapes were fabricated by a filament winding method using two types of Tyranno SA3 grade SiC fibers with 800 filaments/yarn and 1600 filaments/yarn. After chemical vapor infiltration of the SiC matrix, the surface roughness and fiber volume fraction were measured. As filament counts were changed from 800 to 1600, the surface roughness increased but the fiber volume fraction decreased. The $SiC_f$/SiC composite with a bamboo-like winding pattern has a smaller surface roughness and a higher fiber volume fraction than that with a zigzag winding pattern.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the adhesion of Candida albicans according to build angle in 3D printing denture base resin. Methods: The 3D printing was performed by setting the build angle of the disk type specimen designed by CAD program at 0 degree, 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees. Surface roughness was measured using a non-contact 3D microsurface profiler. The specimens were incubated in Candida albicans suspension for 24 hours. The attached Candida albicans were detached by cell scraper. The suspension of detached C. albicans was serially diluted and plated on Trypticase soy broth. After 48 hours of incubation, total colony forming unit was counted. Results: There was no significant difference in surface roughness(Sa) between the test groups, but the interlayer boundary was observed. There was no statistically significant difference in total colony forming units of Candida albicans between the test groups. Conclusion: There was no difference in the average surface roughness and adhesion of Candida albicans between the specimens. It is considered that the setting of the build angle should be set considering the accuracy or strength rather than the roughness of the surface.

  • Material extrusion (ME)-type 3D printing is the most popular among the 3D printing processes. In this study, the cross-section morphologies of ME-type 3D printing manufactured specimens were observed with respect to the thermal properties of the material. The cross-section morphology of a specimen is related to the deposition strength, and the outside profile of the cross-section is related to the surface roughness. The filaments used in this study, with different thermal conductivities, were the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), the high impact polystyrene (HIPS), the glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG), and the polylactic acid (PLA). The cross-sections and the surfaces of the 3D manufactured specimens were examined. In ME-type 3D printing, the filaments are extruded through a nozzle and they form a layer. These layers rapidly solidify and as a result, they become a product. The thermal conductivity of the material influences the cooling and solidification of the layers, and subsequently the cross-section morphology and the surface roughness.

  • The effect of low profile agent and release agent on the surface and mechanical properties of bulk mold compound were investigated. Atomic content and contact angle of surface were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact anglemeter. Surface morphology and surface roughness were obtained using field emission scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope, respectively. As increasing the low profile agent from 0 to 9.2 wt%, the volume shrinkage and surface roughness decreased from 0.35% to 0.05%, and from $0.27{\mu}m$ to $0.12{\mu}m$, respectively. The increase of release agent from 1.8 wt% to 3.6 wt% resulted in the migration of release agent to sample surface and it increased the surface roughness. The flexural strength and impact strength were decreased approximately 30% as the low profile agent increasing from 5.0 wt% to 9.0 wt%.

  • Shear behavior of joint plane has been investigated considering the magnitude of normal stresses and initial surface roughness. Shear strength of joint plane has been measured by performing the multi-stage shear test in which applied normal stress level has been increased stepwise. Multi-stage shear test within the specified normal stress range has been repeated and two types of strength parameter variation have been observed: type 1 - both cohesion and friction angle decrease, type 2 - cohesion decrease and friction angle increase. Trends of strength parameter variation for the three rock types, gneiss, granite and shale, have been investigated and the influence of initial roughness of joint plane on the sequential shear strength change for the repeated multi-stage shear tests also has been analyzed.

  • Recently the steel parts used at automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before in need of the weight down. To achieve this requirement of a high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion content and surface defect as like decarburization, surface roughness etc.. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to know the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of two-stage shot peening iud single-stage shot peening for two kinds of spring steel(SUP7, SAE9254). This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from decreasing the surface roughness unchanging the surface hardness increasing the compressive residual stress. Results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of high hardness.

  • In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. The modifications produced on the silicone surface by oxygen plasma were accessed using ATR-FTIR, contact angle and Surface Roughness Tester. Adhesion was obtained from T-peel tests of semiconductive layer haying different treatment durations. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property with duration of plasma treatment. From the results, the treatment in the oxygen plasma produced a noticeable increase in surface energy, which can be mainly ascribed to the creation of O-H and C=O. It is observed that adhesion performance was determined by surface energy and roughness level of silicone surface. It is found that at dielectric strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.
