  • This study estimate the degree of contamination in the streamwater around the Sudokwon landfill site. It was sampled at 10 sites in Jan., Apr., Jul. and Oct., 1996. There were analyzed five kinds of toxic chemical material-CN, AES, PCB, As, Org-p, and four kinds of heavy metal-Pb, Hg, Cd, $C^{+6}$ The result are 1)The COD was generally increased to compare before landfall, 2) The Org-P and PCB were not detected at all points, 3) The concentrations of Pb, $C^{+6}$ and As were lower than the environmental criteria values, 4) The CN, Hg and Cd were over envirommental criteria values. and so emergent regulation is needed, 5) The effects of the streamwater contamination were not only the leachate of the landfall, but also the small factories and agricultural land around the landfill.

  • To understand the chemical changes in the streamwater and contribution of subsurface discharge during the storm event, we analyzed electric conductivity (EC), anions, and cations in Gwangneung deciduous and coniferous forest catchment. The stream water samples were collected three times in 2004 by using an auto-sampler: September 7-9 (E040907-D and -C; where D and C indicate deciduous and coniferous forest catchment, respectively), September 11-13 (E040911-D and -C), and September 16-18 (E040916-D and -C). We found a negative relationship between discharge intensity and EC in streamwater. The E040911 and E040916 showed slack change of stream discharge in comparison to E040907 due to contribution of base flow recharged by much precipitation. Moreover, NO/sub 3//sup -/ concentrations in E040911-C were highest, which may have resulted from forest management such as thinning in 2004. The relationship between pH and alkalinity in stream water showed that much of stream water have been recharged through subsurface. We conclude that subsurface discharge highly influences streamwater quality in a forested catchment, and the seperation of stream water discharge is therefore necessary to sustainable water management.

  • Characteristics of pollutant load during irrigation and non-irrigation periods was investigated for streamwater from a rural watershed. Water was sampled and discharge was measured at 5-days intervals at outlet of study area. The mean concentrations of TN and TP in an irrigation period are higher than in an non-irrigation period, while mean COD concentration in an irrigation period is lower than in a non-irrigation period. For increasing discharge during an irrigation period, TN concentration increase, TP concentration is nearly unchanged, and COD concentrations decreases.

  • Characteristics of concentration of pollutants such as total nitrogen(T-N), total phosphorus(T-P) and chemical oxygen demand(COD) during dry days of $2002{\sim}2003$ were investigated for streamwater from a rural watershed. Water was sampled and discharge was measured at 5-days intervals at outlet of study area. The mean concentrations of pollutants in non-irrigation and irrigation period not significantly different. For increasing discharge in 2002, TN concentration increased but COD concentrations decreases.

  • Geophysical surveys (electrical resistivity, self-potential, and magnetic methods) and streamwater sample analysis have been carried out at a site of tailings of waste deposits in an abandoned mine, Jangpoong, which is situated in Kowesan-Gun, Chungbuk-Do. The research was aimed at investigating the suitability of the various geophysical methods for detection of AMD (acid mine drainage) paths, and ultimately mapping of preferred AMD flow channels by incorporating the water sample analysis. Electrical resistivity section from the dipole-dipole line represents the low-resistivity zone trending northwest toward the stream nearby. The positions of the resistivity anomalies for AMD channels are well correlated to the ones from the various geophysical surveys. In addition they correspond to the sites of the higher peaks for the pH, EC, heavy metal content for the water sample data.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of a torrent control structure using customized tetrapods on the forest water quality, fishes, snials and streamwater ecology conservation and management. The study was conducted in the Honggye valley located in Sanchung-gun, Gyungsangnam-do, and stream water quality and streamwater ecology was compared before and during 2 years after construction of torrent control structure. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, pH of stream water didn't get out of the range of River water quality standard class I. After 2 years construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, Dissolved Oxygen concentration didn't change, and Electrical Conductivity measurements agreed well within the range of normal clean stream water quality. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, fishes and snials up and down stream movement didn't influence of the tetrapods dam. Stream water quality during 2 years after construction of the torrent control structure was similar to before construction. Therefore, it was find out that the torrent control structure didn't affect stream water quality and ecology.

  • An on-line digestion system based on the flow injection analysis technique was presented for the determination of total phosphorus. The system converts condensed and organic phosphoruses into orthophosphate that can be analyzed spectrophotometically. The reaction between orthophosphate and ammonium molybdate in a strong acid medium forms the yellow complex of phosphomolybdate which is next reduced to a molybdic blue complex by stannous chloride. The quantitation of orthophosphate is based on the absorbance of the molybdic blue. To determine total phosphorus, the digestion system was installed between the sample injector and the reaction coil with the added lines of digestion solution(potassium persulfate+sulfuric acid) and the $H_2O$ carrier. The system has shown that the digestion efficiencies were greater than 95% for the typical condensed and organic phosphoruses. When tripolyphosphate standards were used, the calibration data showed that the linear dynamic range extended to a concentration of 1.5ppm with the detection limit of 25ppb total phosphorus. The typical relative standard deviation was less than 2%. The proposed system was successfully applied to lake water, wastewater, and streamwater. The analytical variables such as digestion efficiency, analysis time, and reproducibility were evaluated and compared with the manual digestion method.
