A two-dimensional numerical simulation of the thermal and fluid flow in engine room (엔진룸 내의 열유체 유동의 2차원 수치시뮬레이션)

  • The complex geometry of the engine room of a passenger car has been modelled two-dimensionally and the thermal and fluid flow therein have been analyzed by using a commercially available code, PATRAN/FLORAM$\mid$N. FLOTRAN adopts a finite element method with streamline upwind formulation for convective terms and the k-.epsilon. turbulence model to solve the three dimensional turbulent flow and heat transfer problems. Velocity vectors, pressure and temperature distributions have been obtained for various cases with different arrangements of license plate, underbody-covers and air dams. The results show that the numerical analysis using PATRAN/FLOTRAN can predict qualitatively well the practical phenomena.

  • One stage axial type turbine is designed by mean-line analysis, streamline curvature method and blade design method using shape parameters. Tip and hub diameter of the turbine are 300mm and 206.4mm, respectively. The rotating speed is 1800RPM, and the output power is 1.4kW. The flow coefficient is 1.68 and the reaction factor at mean-line is 0.373. The number of stator and rotor of the turbine are 31 and 41, respectively. Mach number of stator exit flow near hub is 0.164. A test rig is developed for performance test to validate a developed design method. The experimental result shows that the maximum efficiency is obtained on the design point.

Flow Analysis of Centrifugal Compressor Using Quasi-Three-Dimensional Analysis (원심압축기의 유동해석을 위한 준삼차원 해석기법)

  • This paper presents the analysis of flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no backsweep. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of three-dimensional inviscid analysis with those by finite element method. It is found that the agreements with experimental data are good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

  • A two-dimensional laminar flow through a channel with a pair of symmetric vertical fins is investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The Stokes flow for this channel is first investigated analytically and then the other laminar flows by numerical method. For analytic method, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. In numerical solution for laminar flows, finite difference method(FDM) is used to obtain vorticity and stream function. From the results, the streamline patterns are shown and the additional pressure drop due to the attached fins and the force exerted on the fin are calculated. It is clear that the force depends on the length of fins and Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value, the flow becomes asymmetric. This critical Reynolds number Re/sub c/ depends on the length of the fins.

  • In the present study, a post-processing program is developed for 3D data visualization and analysis. Because the graphical user interface(GUI) of the program is based on Qt-library while all the graphic rendering is performed with OpenGL library, the program runs on not only MS Windows but also UNU and Linux systems without modifying source code. The structure of the program is designed according to the object-oriented programming(OOP) concept so that it has extensibility, reusability, and easiness compared to those by procedural programming. The program is organized as modules by classes, and these classes are made to function through inheritance and cooperation which is an important and valuable concept of object-oriented programming. The major functions realized so far which include mesh plot, contour plot, vector plot, streamline plot, and boundary plot are demonstrated and the relevant algorithms are described.

An Experimental Study on Swirling Flow in a 90 Degree Circular Section Tube (원형단면을 갖는 90$^{\circ}$ 곡관내의 선회유동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The study of swirl flow has been of technical and scientific interest because it has an internal recirculation field and its tangential velocity is related to the curvature of the streamline. The fluid flow for ducts or elbows of an internal engine has been much studied through numerical methods and experiments, but studies about swirl flow has been insufficient. Using the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity, with swirl and without swirl flow for Re=10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, axial velocity distribution is compared with that of Jeong's, Kodadadi's and Murakami's. It was found that the highest velocity of swirl and non-swirl flow occurs in the opposite position at the center of a round tube, $\phi$=45$^{\circ}$

  • A licensing approach for new fuel design is propose. It includes the possible licensing options to be taken according to the level of significance of design changes. This approach can be applied on legal grounds of the AEA, Article 44.3 and Article 21, but implies that the related ERAEAs should be revised or other alternative regulatory guidelines should be prepared. However, it is not intended to invoke additional requirements but rather to streamline and formulate the current practice by using one of supplementary provisions of the AEA, Article 104.2 which is recently enacted for approval of the technical report on a special topic.

  • A method to mitigate the thermal stratification flow of a horizontal pipe line is proposed by heating external bottom of the pipe with electrical heat tracing. Unsteady two dimensional model has been used to numerically investigate an effect of the external Denting to the thermally stratified flow. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using the control volume formulation and SIMPLE algorithm. Temperature distribution, streamline profile and Nusselt numbers of fluids and pipe walls with time are analyzed in case of externally heating condition. no numerical result of this study shows that the maximum dimensionless temperature difference between the hot and the cold sections of pipe inner wall is 0.424 at dimensionless time 1,500 ann the thermal stratification phenomena is disappeared at about dimensionless time 9,000. This result means that external heat tracing can mitigate the thermal stratification phenomena by lessening $\Delta$ $T_{ma}$ about 0.1 and shortening the dimensionless time about 132 in comparison with no external heat tracing.rnal heat tracing.

  • This study intended to develop wellbeing flowerpots on desk which could create a healthy atmosphere in an office and raise people to joy. The pots developed by Blooming company emphasized a design as touching people's emotion through the organic design of the streamline which is different from the geometric line of the flowerpots manufactured by the company as focusing the design on the utility before. As a result, the pots derived from the organic design concepts could provide happiness or joy to the people, and would be a necessity on the narrow desk along with books or writing materials while working. Therefore, the beautifully streamlined pots are expected to compete with European market as the foreign buyers had a great interest in them at the Fair held in Hong-kong at the end of April, 2008.
