  • The analysis of drying stream characteristics for about 500 streams from field survey data with 19 items has been fulfilled. Also, a study area has been determined, and criteria of estimation has been established : criteria such as, available hydrological data, the size of stream lengths and basin areas and regional characteristics. Then they are applied to designated study areas. The final selected study areas are 8 basins. The analysis of drying stream characteristics using a GIS has been applied to 5 basins in which spacial data is comparatively implemented among the final 8 target catchments. The spacial analysis using a GIS is applied to stream slopes for upstream and downstram at weirs, overlaying the map of buffering stream networks and ground water pump stations map, sinuosity of drying stream. As a result of drying streams survey analysis, drying stream characteristics are followed; levee types are earth and natural, cross sectional shapes are trapezoid, stream bed materials are gravels and sands, facilities in streams are weirs. As a result of GIS analysis, stream slopes are comparatively larger downstream than upstream close to weirs. There are arranged ground water pump stations less than 500m from stream networks. Also the average of sinuosity for each drying stream is in the range of 1.229∼1.475, comparatively a serious.

  • In this study a total of 27 stream sites, at 1 km intervals, were monitored for simple physicochemical water characteristics, land coverage patterns, and stream environment characteristics using the Habitat-riparian Indexing System (HIS), in the Yangsan Stream. The HIS has been tested in previous research, resulting in some identification of advantages in the application to the stream ecosystems data. Even though reliable stream environment characterization was possible using HIS, there was no information about the application of this tool to present continuity of environmental changes in stream systems. Also the necessity was raised to compare the results of HIS application with land coverage information in order to provide useful information in management strategy development. The monitoring results of this study showed that changes of environmental degradation were well represented by HIS. Especially, stream environment degradation due to construction was relatively well reflected in the HIS monitoring results, and the main causality of Yangsan Stream degradation was expansion of the urbanized area. In addition, there were significant relationships between the HIS scores and land coverage information. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare appropriate options in controlling or managing the expansion of the industrialized areas in this stream basin in order to improve the stream environment. For this purpose, ensemble utilization of HIS results, water quality, and geographical information, resulting in integration with remote sensing processes can be possible.

  • This study is to develop an assessment system for stream physical environments by considering stream characteristics. Comprehensively, the descriptions of and steam classification, assessing reach selection, contents of assessment categories and indexes are summarized. Since the physical structure of stream is results of reaction by stream power, streams were classified into three types (as high gradient stream, mid gradient stream and low gradient stream) according to the slope of channel, the grain size of bed material and the characteristics of channel topography. The scale of assessment reach was selected based on 10 or 25 times of channel width according to typical characteristics such as interval of step or riffle and sinuosity in each stream type. The assessment indexes were organized into common indicators such as channel stability, flow status, cross-section shape, bank stability, channel alteration and stream crossing structure, and characteristic indicators by stream type such as effective habitats, bed embeddedness, diversity of flow and frequency of step or riffle. To evaluate the applicability, the assessment system was applied to 9 streams and the results were analyzed and presented.

  • The Urban Stream Assessment Technique (USAT) was suggested to give information about present urban stream condition. Domestic and foreign stream evaluation methods were analyzed and some streams were previously investigated to decide evaluation factors that could evaluate stream condition and have concern with characteristics and flood control of urban stream. The USAT consisted of three steps. High step has three characteristics concerned with functions of stream such as flood risk, stream, and ecology. In middle step, three characteristics were subdivided by ten features to describe changes and degradations of urban stream. Low step consisted of fifty three factors that explain the present condition of ten features. A survey of river experts was conducted to reflect weight among characteristics and features. The weights were calculated by analytic hierarchy process(AHP). The USAT was carried out to check over application of that in Suwon, Anyang, and Joongrang stream. The results of stream evaluation were expressed by factor index, feature index, characteristic index, total index, and evaluation grade. The results of the USAT were useful to realize changed and degraded areas. It is expected that the USAT can be used as base investigation for restoring and managing urban streams.

  • The MILD combustion and pollutant emission characteristics were investigated computationally. The temperature of supplying air-stream and mixing rate (${\Omega}$) of exhaust gas in the air-stream were adjusted to investigate the effects of those parameters on the MILD combustion in jet flow field. The emission indices for NO (EINO) and CO (EICO) were introduced to quantify the amount of those species emitted from the combustion. The high-temperature region disappeared gradually as the mixing rate increased for fixed air-stream temperature. The EINO increased as the air-stream temperature became higher for fixed mixing rate, and the EINO decreased dramatically with increasing the mixing rate for each air-stream temperature condition. The EICO also decreased with increasing the mixing rate and it was nearly independent of air-stream temperature except for near ${\Omega}$ = 0.7. It was found that the CO supplied in the air-stream can be destroyed in the MILD combustion over the certain mixing rate.

  • The stream morphologic characteristics of Wonju stream with small watershed are developed with a regular correlation referred to the Horton-Strahler's lows of stream order. Using Manning's formula and the discharges simulated by NWS-PC rainfallrunoff model that has been applied to the adjacent basin for model calibration and verification, the hydraulic characteristics at Wonju bridge are investigated. The peak discharge and the time to peak of unit hydrograph are analyzed by the calculated geomorphologic parameters. Rather primitive as this study is, these results are provided to be used for geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydropraph of ungaged basins including this study area. Through the reestablishment of rating curve and hydrograph with continuous field observations, the hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics of Wonju stream must be presented.

  • This study is to assess the runoff characteristics of nonpoint source pollution loads for Jecheon and Jangpyeong stream watersheds located in the upstream of Chungju lake. The SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), a physically based distributed hydrological model was calibrated and verified using 5 years (2006 to 2010) streamflow and water quality data. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency for streamflow was 0.60~0.92 and the determination coefficients for sediment, Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total Phosphorous (T-P) were 0.53~0.71, 0.51~0.91 and 0.38~0.85 respectively. The results showed that the Sediment, T-N, and T-P of Jangpyeong stream were 40.0~60.9 %, 34.8~64.1 % and 76.5~83.9 % higher than Jecheon stream watershed during wet days. The results evaluated high NPS loads at Jangpyeong stream because the percentage of urban and upland crop cultivation area Jangpyeong stream watershed was higher than Jecheon stream watershed.

  • In order to manage the water quality from the flowing streams in Cheju Island, the characteristics of water quality was investigated from August, 1996 to May, 1997 and the pollutant loadings for future were estimated from the watershed at each stream. Comparing the mean concentrations of each water quality with the criterion of water quality in river, it was under I class except for Changgo Stream, for DO, under I class at the whole station for SS and under II class for BOD. As the pollutant loadings at each stream in 2020 is compared with those in 1996, the estimated results are as follows : 1) for BOD, 59% at Donghong Stream, 24% at Yeonoe Stream, 44% at Ohngpo Stream and 57% at Changgo Stream. 2) for T-N, 91% at Donghong Stream, 76% at Yeonoe Stream, 63% at Ohngpo Stream and 89% at Changgo Stream. 3) for T-P, 69% at Donghong Stream, 42% at Yeonoe Stream, 45% at Ohngpo Stream and 73% at Changgo Stream. The point source loadings discharged through combined sewer could be treated at sewage treatment plant. However, the expected slow decreasing rate of BOD, T-N, and T-P loadings is due to the part of untreated nonpoint source loadings. Nonpoint source loading overflow typically occurs when the flow of stormwater combined with sewage exceeds the capacity of the interceptor sewers. Since most of the sewers used in Cheju Island are the combined sewers, the combined overflow sewage is bypassed into the receiving water area after a rainstorm. Therefore, a means to control nonpoint source loadings should be considered for the river and marine water quality management.

  • The tremendous flood damage caused by Typhoon Rusa(2002) was occurred at GangNeung City in GangWon Province. Almost of the city region was inundated and most of the stream channel facilities were damaged by flash flood with heavy rainfalls. We have investigated seriously damaged parts of stream bank and tried to analyze the causes of damages focused on flow characteristics in curved channel. We analyzed the damage aspects of curved channel by examining geomorphological survey and hydrographical characteristics. Strong correlation was shown according to the regression analysis between length of stream and meander wave length, and meander belt and length of stream. Furthermore, enveloped curve was presented between bottom slope of channel and meander belt, and meander ratio and channel width. As a result, special consideration about stream flow characteristics are needed for engineers who design stream banks and channels.

  • In this study, trends of upper jet stream characteristics (intensity, altitude, latitude, and longitude) over the Asia-North Pacific region during the recent 30 (1979~2008) years were analyzed by using four reanalysis datasets (CFSR, ERA-Int., JRA-55, MERRA). We defined the characteristics of upper jet stream as the averages of mass weighted wind speed, mass-flux weighted altitude, latitude and longitude between 400 and 100 hPa. Due to the vertical averaging of jet stream characteristics, our results reveal a weaker spatial variabilities and trends than previous studies. In general, the four reanalysis datasets show similar jet stream properties (intensity, altitude, latitude and longitude) although the magnitude and trends are slightly different among the reanalysis datasets. The altitude of MERRA is slightly higher than that of others for all seasons. The domain averaged intensity shows a weakening trend except for winter and the altitude of jet stream shows an increasing trend for all seasons. Also, the meridional trend of jet core shows a poleward trend for all seasons but it shows a contrasting trend, poleward trend in the continental area but equatorward trend in the Western Pacific region during summer. The zonal trend of jet core is very weak but a relatively strong westward trend in jet core except for spring and winter. The trends of jet stream characteristics found in this study are thermodynamically consistent with the global warming trends observed in the Asia-Pacific region.
