  • This paper investigates optimization-based base station (BS) placement. An optimization model is defined and the BS placement problem is transformed to a lexicographical stratified programming (LSP) model for a given trajectory, according to different accuracy requirements. The feasible region for BS deployment is obtained from the positioning system requirement, which is also solved with signal coverage problem in BS placement. The LSP mathematical model is formulated with the average geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) as the criterion. To achieve an optimization solution, a tolerant factor based complete stratified series approach and grid searching method are utilized to obtain the possible optimal BS placement. Because of the LSP model utilization, the proposed algorithm has wider application scenarios with different accuracy requirements over different trajectory segments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better BS placement result than existing approaches for a given trajectory.

  • To simulate the combustion process under stratified charged conditions, like GDI engines, the new combustion model is proposed, which is based on Welter's FAE model and Peters' PDF model for considering primary reactions. In addition to these models, the new laminar burning velocity correlation and diffusion flame model are also included in the proposed model. The former can be applicable to much wider range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature than the others, such as Keck's and Guilder's models, and the latter has been derived from water-gas shift reaction and hydrogen oxidation, by which the secondary reactions can be considered after primary reactions. 3-D computation has been performed by using STAR-CD v3.05 in the simple cylindrical geometry under stratified charged condition. Judging from the calculated results, the present model proves to be reasonable to simulate the characteristics of flame propagation and concentrations of products in burned regions.

  • In the present study, the IDI-type constant volume chamber, which utilizes the indirect injection stratified charge method, is used to solve several problems including misfires and cycle-variations caused by unstable initial ignitions. A subchamber has been used to make an ignitable mixture under the low mean equivalence ratio. After burned in the subchamber, the flame jet getting through the passage hode enters the main chamber and burns the lean charge. There are many factors which affect the combustion characteristics of the indirect injection stratified engine. The passage hole angle is the most important since it determines the direction of flame flows into the main chamber. In the present study, we measured the combustion pressure, and the wall temperature, and computed the heat flux through the cylinder wall in order to understand the combustion characteristics depending on passage hole angle and the equivalence ratio.

  • In previous study, diesel-methanol stratified injection system is manufactured and applied to a D.I. diesel engine in order to realize combustion improvement using methanol, which is oxygenated fuel with large latent heat. We know that NOx and soot is reduced by stratified injection of diesel fuel-methanol. Therefore, in the present study, combustion diagnosis using optical measurement is tried to make clear effect of methanol on simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot. Two-color method is used to measure flame temperature and KL value, which is approximately proportional to the soot consentration along the optical path. Laser induced scattering method was used to measure distribution of soot at two dimensional area. Also, it is compared exhaust characteristics of NOx and soot with results of optical measurement.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach of the instability criterion from stratified to nonstratified flow in horizontal pipe at cocurrent flow conditions. The new theoretical instability criterion for the stratified and nonstratified flow transition in horizontal pipe has been developed by hyperbolic equations in two-phase flow, Critical flow condition criterion and onset of slugging at cocurrent flow condition correspond to zero and imaginary characteristics which occur when the hyperbolicity of a stratified two-phase flow is broken, respectively. Through comparison between results predicted by the present theory and the Kukita et al.[1] experimental data of pipes, it is shown that they are in good agreement with data.

  • Estimation of population proportion like the distribution rate of LED TV and the prevalence of a disease are often estimated based on survey sample data. Population proportion is generally considered as a special form of population mean. In complex sampling like stratified multistage sampling with unequal probability sampling, the denominator of mean may be random variable and it is estimated like ratio estimator. In this research, we examined the estimation of distribution rate based on stratified multistage sampling, and determined some numerical outcomes using stratified random sample data with about 25% of missing observations. In the data used for this research, the survey weight was determined by deterministic way. So, the weights are not random variable, and the population distribution rate and its variance estimator can be estimated like population mean estimation. When the weights are not random variable, if one estimates the variance of proportion estimator using ratio method, then the variances may be inflated. Therefore, in estimating variance for population proportion, we need to examine the structure of data and survey design before making any decision for estimation methods.

  • Support vector machine is a classification algorithm based on statistical learning theory. It has shown many results with good performances in the data mining fields. But there are some problems in the algorithm. One of the problems is its heavy computing cost. So we have been difficult to use the support vector machine in the dynamic and online systems. To overcome this problem we propose to use stratified sampling of statistical sampling theory. The usage of stratified sampling supports to reduce the size of training data. In our paper, though the size of data is small, the performance accuracy is maintained. We verify our improved performance by experimental results using data sets from UCI machine learning repository.

  • Stratified charge has been thought as one of the ways to avoid a sharp pressure rise on HCCI combustion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR on HCCI combustion. The pre-mixture with thermal, mixing and EGR stratifications is charged in Rapid Compression Machine. After that, the pre-mixture is compressed and in that process, in-cylinder gas pressure and temperature are analyzed. Additionally numerical calculation with multi-zones modeling is run to know the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR.

  • An immersed boundary method for simulation of density-stratified flows is developed and applied to computation of viscous flows over two-dimensional obstacles in a bounded domain under stable density stratification. Density sources/sinks are introduced on the body surface. Two obstacle shapes are used, a vertical barrier and a smooth cosine-shaped hill; weak stratification, defined by $K=ND/{\pi}U{\leq}1$, where U, N, and D are the upstream velocity, buoyancy frequency, and domain height, respectively, is considered. The results are consistent with other authors' calculations, and shed light on computation of density-stratified flows in complex geometries.

  • In general, the stratified charge for direct injection gasoline engine should be introduced to achieve ultra-lean combustion scheme. In order to apply the concept of stratified charge into direct injection gasoline engine, a reflector was adapted on cylinder head. An installation of the reflector in front of the injector nozzle leads the mixture to be rich near spark plug. Therefore, the mixture near the spark plug is locally ich to ignite while the lean mixture is wholly introduced into the combustion chamber. In this paper, the characteristics of combustion is analyzed with the variations of injection pressure and load in a stratified-charge direct injection single cylinder gasoline engine.
